Today I will tell you a bit about overthinking - one of the biggest trap calisthenics athletes (and not only) can fall into. The paralysis of analysis is the term probably first time being used in 1970’s in one of The Times articles. However the essence of the overanalyzing problem has been expressed many times before even in the Antique era. The Fox and the Cat fable illustrates the paradox of having too many options. No matter where you are on your bodyweight journey, its hard not to overthink our choices to some degree. There are so many choices, so many skills to achieve... planche, handstand, frontlever... then 10 possible exercises for them. We live in a world of unlimited dose of information. Fitness became a mainstream genre available for almost everyone. The new exercises, routines, methods are bombarding us across every social media platform from the moment we wake up, till we go to sleep. And its not to say it's something bad, at the end of the day knowledge is a huge power (knowledge). And to become best possible athletes we should always educate, expand horizons and challenge our current beliefs. However, there is also the other end of the spectrum. Too many ideas, too much information can create unnecessary noise and confusion that can sometimes be literally paralysing.
I used some ideas Barry Schwartz expressed in his book "The Paradox of Choice" if you have not i highly recommend to take a look at it. The concept of Maximizer vs Satisficer and overthinking is something we can really apply to training with success. I also used photos of following street workout athletes - Hannibal for king, Zef Zakaveli, Lord Vital, Dennis Minin, N1K, Victor Kamenov.
