I will get my Qidi X Max 3 in combination with 3dChameleon End of this month. So i have a fast fully enclosed heated chamber CoreXY Printer with an MMU which can print high temperature filaments and its using the open Klipper and has a prusalicer based slicer for less then 1300€. I dont like proprietary closed systems and bedslingers are outdated with the new fast CoreXY Systems and this printer is working right out of the box, no building or modding necessary. It will get the most bang you can get and still is best in bang for the buck. And money counts, does it?

Sounds like a good setup. I understand not liking the proprietary system of bambu labs. I do like that the AMS system on bambu labs is extremely easy to set-up, and you can get one with a P1S for $1k. I'd be curious to hear how the chameleon set-up works for you. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

Thanks for the very useful review of the current Best In Class 3D printer options. I can't say I learned a lot because I've been immersed in my own identical research for the last month or so, but that doesn't detract from the usefulness of this video. After an initial look, I was put off by Bambu Lab's privacy and security. I realize it's possible to print off line on an air gapped Bambu Lab printer but swapping tiny micro SD cards into the side of the display seems like punishing the customer for not uploading all of their designs to a Chinese cloud server which is a complete non-starter for me. Others too, because Bambu Lab will soon be offering an enterprise level printer that doesn't use a cloud server for those who signed NDAs or otherwise do not want their designs blasted all over the internet. Honestly, I just disagreed with the entire walled garden product approach. I was pleasantly surprised that Bambu Lab's proprietary parts were reasonably priced, but price isn't my primary concern with proprietary designs. I bought into QIDI's first 3D printer because it had dual extruders and an enclosure that would allow me to print two color ABS parts, but the printers were not reliable, the enclosure made them difficult to maintain, and QIDI was so insistent on proprietary parts that they even soldered the header pins on the opposite side of the open source hardware stepper motor driver boards that everyone was using in order to reverse the pinouts to force me to buy the repair parts from them. Bad as that was, they introduced a new printer a year later and my five 3D printers ($3000 worth) were destined for the landfill after QIDI stopped selling parts for them. I'm mostly looking at a Creality K1 Max but holding off another month or two to see if the fix for their extruder is reliable in the long term, and to see if they live up to their promise to publish their version of Klipper that they crippled to make their own software, as required by the open source licensing agreement. Other deficiencies such as the requirement to use a glue stick like it's 2009 (they shouldn't have copied THAT from Bambu Lab) should be remedied by after market suppliers of build plates. I'd like to get back to an enclosed printer so I can print ABS, but the bed slingers are now much better than even a few months ago. They're much less expensive than enclosed core XY machines and the open architecture is much easier to service. My new and improved bed slinger options are the SV06 Plus (with a Klipper add-on), the SV07, or the Neptune 4 Pro. I'd love a 300 mm cube build volume Klipper based bed slinger with linear guide rods, force sensing auto bed leveling and Z offset, a four wire CANbus cable to the extruder (there is no excuse for a ribbon cable in this high flex application), accelerometers on the extruder and bed so I can calibrate input shaping specific to my own installation, and preferably an optical filament run out sensor on the top of the extruder. Maybe the Neptune 5 Pro or SV08 Plus? My application is rapid prototyping and low volume manufacturing of functional products, mostly in TPU. I wouldn't mind a Klipper WiFi enabled printer with no other user interface. I'd be quite happy with a Klipper/Fluidd web based interface to transfer files and control the printer. The manufacturers are getting feedback from the community and are iterating toward an optimal solution. It's frustrating that there is no printer with all of the best features, but things are definitely moving in the right direction. I also wouldn't recommend a Voron kit to someone new to 3D printing unless they were a very technical geeky person looking for an in depth dive to learn about 3D printers and a strong desire to have hot rod 3D printer bragging rights. For those people who don't already have a 3D printer capable of printing ABS, the Voron community has a Print It Forward project where Voron builders can get 3D printed Voron parts from other Voron owners, build their own Voron, and then print the parts for the next Voron builder who needs them. I love community stuff like that.

Hey thanks so much for watching and for sharing all your experiences. Seems like you really have put a ton of time into researching all these printers. Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the cloud atmosphere on Bambu Labs either, however the speed, build quality, and overall print quality, along with the aluminum body enclosure really got me. I was doing the research anyways, and thought it could be useful to anybody shopping for a new printer, so I made a video. There's definitely been a lot of machines coming out. I was primarily interested in getting a core XY this time around, since I have primarily been using bed slingers. However, like you were saying, several of the more recent bed slingers are decent machines and I thought a couple should make the list. Anyways, thanks again for watching, and for sharing your thoughts.

@@theanonymusguy - Premature happy birthday! I bought a motorcycle for my 60th birthday, but a 3D printer is a great present as well. 🙂 A month after posting my manifesto above, I bought a Neptune 4 Pro. I missed the first batch so I waited three weeks for the next batch. I'm loving it. It's currently printing 14 parts for my online business. It doesn't have WiFi but the newer Plus and Max versions of the Neptune 4 do. I added WiFi by plugging a dongle into the USB port for power and the Ethernet port for data. I don't miss the USB port for the thumb drive because I transfer all of the files quickly and easily with the Klipper/Fluidd web based interface which is awesome. I can't see having a 3D printer without Klipper. The Neptune 4 Pro is capable of faster printing, and I do print PLA slightly faster than on my old printer, but mostly I'm using the improved kinematics and cooling for better quality parts. I was a bit late to Klipper and very late to PETG, but I'm there now. I like PETG. Most of the strength and temperature resistance of ABS with nearly the ease of printing of PLA. I printed one of my legacy ABS parts. It's a large flat part that could have warping and bed adhesion problems but it's only 6 mm tall so it doesn't tend to warp much. I printed a draft shield around the part and it printed very well... better than my previous 3D printers. I still need to develop a TPU profile but that shouldn't be too difficult and I'm looking forward to seeing what improvements in print quality that the Neptune 4 Pro can achieve. I'll probably buy the Neptune 4 Pro Max when it's available. The non-Pro Max is available now, but I'm waiting for the all steel motion control components of the Pro version, which I think will improve print quality and reliability on such a large and fast printer.

I really want to get into 3D modeling but have no idea where to start!
@xykit
@xykit 7 ай бұрын
Awesome, 3D modeling is really fun. There's a lot of great options out there now for getting started. If you are on PC look into Blender (blender.org), it has a bit of a learning curve but is very capable and also free. If you don't have a very powerful PC you can check out Tinker CAD (also free), it's web based and is pretty user friendly. Many pros use Maya for modeling and Zbrush for scuplting. If you have a tablet like and iPad I'd check out Nomad sculpt (I think it's around $15 USD). If you are looking more into CAD design, people really like fusion 360. The best thing to do is download a program and start messing around in it, watch a few tutorials here on KZfaq, see if you like it. You'll learn a lot by just jumping in. Thanks for watching!

I have a question good sir. If I were to make 3D Printing a way to make money by selling the things I make, what should I be looking at? And if my budget is big
@xykit
@xykit 11 ай бұрын
That is a good question. If I were buying a printer to make money with, I would want fast, accurate, and reliable. I would probably look at printers that just work most of the time, like Prusa, or the Bambu Labs. Depending on how much space you have, you could also take the route of buying a bunch of less inexpensive printers like the neptunes, or the new ankermake m5 and running a 3D printer farm. This allows you to do lots of different models all at once, and just keep running them over, and over. It also depends on if you are going to produce functional parts with engineering materials, or if you are just printing nick knack's and toys. Functional, engineering materials will require that you have an enclosure in most cases. Thanks for watching!

I would say it really depends on your budget. If your budget allows it, I would highly recommend a newer, faster core XY machine. We've been very pleased with our Bambu labs (X1 Carbon) and it seems a lot of people are enjoying the Qidi X Max 3. If your budget is tighter I would look at the Neptune 4 or the AnkerMake M5 or M5C. I have heard of a few people having a few issues with the lower budget machines, but I've also heard people love them as well. Honestly I still run a Creality CR10s, and two Ender 3 Pros which are budget machines, they just need a little more love and attention. Either way, just getting into 3D printing is fun (sometimes frustrating) but overall a worthwhile experience. Thanks for watching.

@xykit
@xykit Жыл бұрын
Ohhhh, that's a hard one. 400mm+ is pretty big, even several of the "Max" models stop around 300mm ish. Creality has several larger machines, as you are aware. Their CR-6 max has a 400mm build volume I believe. The Elegoo Neptune 3 Max goes up just over 400mm. I wonder if Elegoo will release a Neptune 4 Max soon? The AnyCubic Kobra Max has a big volume too. Haven't heard much about the AnyCubic machines though, although I do like their filament. For me, I really wanted to take advantage of the faster speeds that are coming out, especially in the core xy machines. Not sure that any of the new "fast" core xy machines have that large of build volume. The Tronxy machines have some pretty large printer kits, but I've heard those can be kinda fiddly. Thanks for watching, if you find a good, fast large build volume printer, I'd love to hear about it.

Actually I miss the Qidi X-Max 3 (new edition) in your presentation. The only printer in a consumer price range with activly heated chamber and also with 325by325 printbed the largest ready2use printer. For the Prusa XL: Its not just about multi material and multi colour. You can actually use different nozzlesizes on diferent extruders. At the moment, integrating this feature into Prusa Slicer still is in development (even no public pre-releases at the moment), so you have to edit your gcode manualy. But's realy a very nice feature, if most of your print can be printed with a big nozzle but some details need a smal nozzle. Actually I did a print manualy using Revo on my mk3s+, sliced with 0.4 and 0.8 mm. First 3 layers I used 0.4mm nozzle, after that 0.8. It was a case there the bottom was the later top, with coloured text inside (manual filament changes). So definitly, with automatic toolchanger you get some very nice features, if you can do such things automaticly. Changing nozzlesizes midprint can be a game changer. Also, the mainboard supports 2 hotends. For more than 2 hotends an extra electronic board is needed. So for 5 extruders the extra electronic board is included in the price. In most szenarios 2 heads are enough. If you just want to change colours, a classic filament changer could be used (universal solutions like the Chameleon color 3d should still work). 2 Printheads are the most interesting configuration. Beside two nozzle sizes its nice for support (soluble support or the PLA/PETG-trick). So definitly, if it were not for the long delivery time, I definitly would opt for the Prusa XL with 2 heads.

I own 3 of these, X-MAX3, Bambu Labs Carbon X1, and the Creality K1 MAX and I am sure many will think I am nuts but the Max-3 out of the box has been the most consistent with all the crap filaments I have. and I think it does the best on ABS for me. I do love the multifilament of the X1, but I use the Max3 for any single-color prints I do. the K1 just seems to be a tiny bit more picky, with some tweaking it prints fantastic, but when I change filament ( I have tons of off-brand and OLD filament I am using up) it wants more tweaking. the X1 and Max3 are close, really all 3 are almost the same. I am guessing maybe I'm biased as the Max3 I got first, its prints (IMHO) was unbelievably great with NO work, set the head and every print (almost) has been great. the other two I have had actual failures with ( and I am sure I will soon with the Max3) but so far the one that has not failed me is my favorite. If it was not so dang heavy, backloaded, and had the USB on top i would say its almost perfect. As far as prints. they are all so close I would say none will be a bad pick. And I am sure everybody will have favorites. I have 6 other printers. Prusa Mark3, Ender, Anet(from years ago) even a Hobby King one from 10 years ago? acrylic enclosed.. worked ok but have not used it in years. I have never had printers work so good out of box as the last ones. has renewed my interest.

@@clok1966 I have the X-Max 3 for about 1,5 weeks now. While the print quality and speed definitly is the best of all my fdm printers, there are some parts needing improvements. First some easy changes: - on the first day I took a saw and cut away the rods there the door hinges onto. I drilled some holes, now I use one easy to remove rod to hinge the door onto. If I pull the rod, the door is released and I can store it on a shelf. It is extremly easy now to remove and attach the door. - of course I use a bowden as filament guide to place the spool left to the printer. Yesterday I got some transparent tube with an inside diameter of 2.5mm. I will replace the blue tube by this on the weekend. I also will make an extension cable for the filament runout sensor, so the tube from will go continiously from the side of the printer to the printhead. This makes unloading the filament much more easy if filament runs out, as you do not need to reach to the backside of the printer anymore. Theese are the easy modifications I definitivly recommend for anyone. But there is one quite big modification I made: Unloading filament you have to pull on the filament, else it might be tangled inside the extruder. Actually this happend the first time I unloaded the fillament, even with pulling. It just happened once, as I later heated only with the minimum temperature (195°C on PLA) for unloading, not the one I use for printing (220 or more). Still, the tip of unloaded filament looks ugly and I have to pull while unloading. No way to use an ERCF with this hotend. So I changed to Revo. I ordered a replacement extruder, so I always can go back. I cut of the holder for the hotend and filed the side flat. I printed an adapter for the Revo Voron hotend - mechanicly everything worked smothly. The problem: The Revo heatercore uses a thermistor, Qidis hotend uses a type K thermocouple. Electricaly incompatible. Also no input for a thermistor on the mainboard. Quick&Dirty solution: I added an old Creality silent board (8bit). While I have a bunch of old Ramps-based boards flying around, this was my choice as its supported by the Sonic pad. As a beginner with Klipper it was quite comfortable to let the sonic pad take care of flashing and having a printer.cfg with the pin definition for the sensor. Actually it worked on first try to use the thermistor input on the Creality board instead of the thermocouple input on the printhead. No problem to add the extension cable for the thermistor through the cablechain. Of course I ordered the MKS THR36 as a long-term solution. It cost about 17,53€ at the moment on AliExpress. It supports thermistor, not thermocouple. Actually the board qidi used is based on the thr36, modified for qidi. So changing shouldn't be a big deal. It also have extra pinheaders for neopixel and sensors. Actually I plan to add a sensor detecting if filament realy is loaded. With the Revo (standard) nozzle the filament tip looks perfect after. Quality of prints is still as good as before. Of course at the moment I had to reduce volumetric flow, as I have not got the Revo High-Flow yet. A 15h print for a Ikea lack enclosure worked just fine. With perfect filament tip on unloading, I am sure adding a ERCF will be no problem anymore. The conversion is still not perfect at the moment; my cooling solution for the coldend is a bit improviced. Also, a silent board sticked to the back side of the printer isn't the final solution (but as said, a MKS THR36 isnon the way). Also the printhead cover has endured some manual cutting and might need replacement. But everything already works, so I am very happy ;-)

@@oleurgast730 Agree, and I may have spoken to soon, last night I had a major fail. I am not sure yet but it appears the extruder failed majorly, it pushed out the back somehow. Plugged nozzle I am not sure. but the hot filament pushed out INSIDE the fan case/head and filled it. I cant get the cover off to see the fail as it filled it and part of removing the cover it compressing it. with it full of filament (you can see it on spots pushed out it like somebody squeezed a large green bucket of pudding its pushed out every crack , it looks like somebody opened a tube of caulk and filled it) behind the silver cover it's completely filled with filament that has hardened so if I try compress the cover to remove it I hit the filament. I can't get cover off to look at fail and remove the goop it created. I saw one review on youtube where this same thing happened, the print head failed and it pushed out in the center of it where it should have been connected ( the cooling fins then the extruder, right in the middle it appears to have pushed out somehow?). That reviewer was at the machine when it happened so caught it right away. after so many successful prints I have not watched much , just went out when things were done.. my mistake I guess. At least I have many other printers to use while I figure out what to do. I think I need to break cover off, but I am about 99% sure the filament is bonded to the cover, and it's a solid block of extruded filament under it. Guess I jinxed myself.

Great video, I have a question though, from a purely practical print point of view whats the difference between the elegoo 4 vs the p1p? Same speed, can print same materials? On paper it seems too good to be true? I love the finish of the bamboos/wifi/caerma but im still debating if its worth 2-3x the price
@xykit
@xykit Жыл бұрын
Fair question. The p1p is a core xy machine and will provide more stability and consistency due to that simple fact. The Elegoo seems like a good option though as well, but I doubt it will provide as consistent of results. I'm guessing the finish of the prints, and the dimensional accuracy will suffer if pushed to full speed.
@tftexe
@tftexe Жыл бұрын
@@xykit this is a great response, thank you. So the finish of the prints and accuracy may be better. It's a hard call which is better for the price. Plug/play wifi access, care free printing, high likely hood of quality prints at high speed Vs 35% of the price. Difficult decision
@xykit
@xykit Жыл бұрын
@@tftexe It is a tough decision for sure. Do you currently have other 3d printers? Also, are you planning to sell prints and make money with it? A higher price might be worth it if it's going to be a money maker. But if you are just trying out 3d printing and getting your feet wet, it might be worth starting with a less expensive machine and seeing how you like it. On the other hand, paying more in the first place for a more reliability might be worth it as well. Good luck, thanks!

Hi , Kobra 2 max or Neptune 4 max or....?
@xykit
@xykit 10 ай бұрын
That's a tough question. Specs are pretty similar, but the Kobra has a slightly higher build volume. The Neptune has a direct drive extruder, the Kobra uses a bowden tube. I think for me personally, I might choose the Neptune 4 max, just because I have a few other Elegoo printers already. I believe the Neptune also runs on Klipper which is a plus. Thanks for watching.

The AMS is definitly the best filament changeing solution. However, a toolchanger is something totaly different. For example you can combine different nozzle sizes with the same material. That feature is on the rodmap for Prusa Slicer. Also instead of more printheads you might design a pick-and-place tool (for example embedding magnets in a print). But as always the correct answer is not Bambu or Prusa XL, the correct answer is both.

You know, that's a good question. Do you need it, NO, especially if you are not going to be printing in multi-material. Is it nice to have? Yes, it makes it really easy to switch between filaments and gives the option for color printing. But the printer itself works well even without the AMS.
