Which polishing machine actually cuts faster? The Rotary Polisher? Or the Dual Action Polisher? In this video, Yvan and Nick go to great lengths for a very "scientific" experiment. Same machine settings throughout; same polishing duration; same bottle of polish; same process of cleaning pads.
We take heat readings of the paint, and we measure the paint thickness as we go about polishing our test sections. What are your thoughts, either before or after watching the video?!

Keeping it simple is key to this channel. The experience and "keeping it simple" approach is fabulous. The product line is simple and not complicated. Sometimes too much of a good thing is not good, like having 20 different pads, or polishes, sealants. Just keep it simple. Appreciate this channel for its integrity and honest approach to business and education.

@DIY Detail. I don't know if this is a subjective question but does the rotary polisher provide more control over the RA? Say I only need to polish the chrome bumper of my car without accidentally touching the plastic trim on the bumper. Better to use the rotary? EDIT: BTW IMHO faster is not always better. I'd rather sacrifice speed over control especially when it come to paint correction. There's not much paint on modern auto these days. I think I (eventually) burned the paints on my cars over the years using a large 10" rotary polisher and just plain Maguire's liquid wax. I didn't know way back then and now with YT channels like yours, I know much more. Thank you.

Think 🤔 I would if needed a beer or two Beene though I don’t really drink nowadays to have gotten through the time spent. As someone new to polishing it sure is reassuring to know how safe your system is for a newbie. Someone needs to do the maths on how many one stage polished that would have been the equivalent of on average. I have the rupes polisher but will definitely be purchasing a rotary in the future as your guys rotary is very competitively priced.

It took them 6+ hours to burn through the clear coat with a DA. You do not need to be careful, just do 3-4 slow controlled passes like they teach with the gold standard system and you won't have any issues. You could do 100+ passes and be fine as demonstrated here. Not that you want to do that!

Nice video guys, Very informative and a keen video. But i have two honest questions? 1. With RPM/OPM being equivalent would you agree that a 25mm throw is more aggressive than a 21mm than a 15mm and so on..? 2. One of the biggest selling points of the DA was that it wouldn't burn paint on an edge and the rotary will. If you did this same test on an edge of a panel will we get the results? Thanks guys.
@diydetailofficial
@diydetailofficial 25 күн бұрын
The longer the stroke, the more agressive the cut. As an example at 2500 OPM, you have the pad making 15, 21, or 25 mm circles, all at the same speed. User error burns edges, not the tool. The edge around the window washer hole burnt through on the DA side, but not on the rotary side.
@brooks.5849
@brooks.5849 25 күн бұрын
Thank you for the response! Yes obviously operator error is a huge factor on messing up paint. When it comes to tools if we were to ride on an edge on purpose with a Rotary Vs DA, the DA will burn the paint faster. Is that accurate?

Those are deep scratches and hard clear coat. If you want to completely remove deep scratches in search for perfection its going to take a lot of passes. We're removing clear coat, and you need to make the decision whether or not you want to remove so much of something that's supposed to be there to protect the paint. With the yellow waffle and gold standard polish on a DA polisher I can remove 50% of most scratches and greatly reduce the appearance of the remaining imperfections with 3-4 passes. That should be enough for most people not trying to bring their cars to a show.

I actually posed this question to Lake Country. Jay explained to me with some math/ scientific calculations and said that Rotary does cut faster. On a rotary polisher, more work is done further away from the center because that's the part of the pad that travels furthest and fastest. On a random orbital, more than 80% of the work being done is by the small orbit, so in compariosn a 8mm DA Vs Rotary. so this😢 will change with a larger throw polisher. So I am wondering if because of the fact that this is a 25mm Da it made a differnec? I did t think that much a difference. I am also wondering if the gear reductions you have in each machine . Rotary being 25:1 and the DA 5:1, are these exact ratios also used in other mfgs Rotaries and DA? Also, you are testing this on a flat panel, what happened when your working on doors and other area that are curved? These are heavy machines and I am wondering for someone who does a number of cars a day. Like a detail shop how their arms will feel from the extra weight
@diydetailofficial
@diydetailofficial 25 күн бұрын
Thanks for the questions, yes an 8mm DA is far from effective. The 25mm stroke( or even a 21mm) is much more efficient than a rotary. One additional benefit of cutting with a DA is that less time is spent refining the surface. Curves make little difference, as our DA isn’t prone to stalling . The gear reduction we chose for our machines are not the industry norm, but we engineered the Machines to be effective at lower pad speed to reduce heat generation. Our machines are solid in feel, but no heavier than competitors on the market, in fact they are lighter than many.

First of all,,buffer"? U mean a DA or Rotary? Secondly - why not? If you have NO experience then get a panel from the junkyard and train on it, if you do it is a wonderful machine - I did it by hand all those years and boy was I missing out
