Short description:
In this video I discuss the difference between a cheaper HPA Airmega filter (oil/water separator) and the more expensive Tuxing seperator. Both separators are bought from Aliexpress (no seller name is mentioned). Purpose of this video is to make people aware of (possible) dangers of Chinese products.
For both separators, the following is discussed:
- Unboxing: What parts are included?
- Disassembly: What's inside?
- Measure the dimensions: Are they correct?
- Technical: Stress calculation, Is it safe for 300 bar air pressure?
- Conclusion
Feel free to leave a comment if you have a question, notice an error or wrong statement.
WARNING:
Do not save money on safety! The seller on Aliexpress deceived me by sending a filter with different (smaller!) dimensions (wall thickness was 2.6 mm vs. 5.6 mm promised). I do not claim that every Airmega filter is dangerous, but mine is!

Very good video. Thank you for making this. I am a Spanish teacher and have studied Spanish for my whole life. I know how challenging it is to learn another language. Your English is very good! I'm impressed with your level and pronunciation in English. I lived in Switzerland. I just learned a little German, but it is a difficult language.

Very very very informative and knowledgeable video. You've maid my day with this video as I'm in need of this type of video to understand better how do the PCP filter works. I do really appreciate all of your hard work with researching and calculating all of these stuff. Despite I'm not an engineer and I managed to understand most of the points you covered in the video. Thumbs up for this great review 👌👍

The issue with that Tuxing model there's no safety burst disk. Look at Tuxing double filter models and you'll see they added a burst disk. The latest double models have a safety valve that will open up releasing air.
@BOTzerker
@BOTzerker 3 жыл бұрын
There's multiple issues with the airmega model: 1) using it as it came with the inner elements packed loosely makes it function horribly, 2) the inner elements should be in a cartridge so the acid from the molecular sieve does not eat away at the cylinder, 3) if you manage to pack it so pressure can build up inside then you have a safety concern because there's no burst disk.

Thank you for the detailed analysis! I was going to do the calcs, maybe I still will, I too use worst case scenario as one never knows if a mfg used or accidently obtained a bad lot or lower quality material. 300 bar is nothing to take lightly. Tuxing seems to one of the better mfg available. So buyer beware, your live may be at risk. your video is greatly appreciated.

Status at 1. of February 2021, for "new model" Airmega filter (cca 22eur without shipping). Wall thickness is now about 1.7-1.9mm and on my model I have little bonus: there is visible sew. I don't think that it is safe even for 200 bar.

If using the Tuxing filter, how should you mount it, do you feed air into the filter from top or invert the filter and feed in from the bottom, I'm assuming best to feed from the bottom?

Hey there. I understand your concerns but, either **your math is wrong** being an order of magnitude bigger or you just proved, mathematically, that these are SAFE because, if the numbers I see @14:49 are correct, then 80.63 MPa are ~11694psi and 161.25 MPa are 23387.3352 psi...The average airgun doesn't go beyond 30 MPa and my manometer "stops counting" at 40... So, theoretically, IF your math is correct, then it's "fine". But, your math seems to be wrong according to many calculators online, based on ASME B31.3 Equation 3a.

I received the same junk. I filed a dispute. Hope I get my $ back. If not, I may try bonding a carbon fiber reinforcement. I have been trying to find specs of carbon fiber burst pressure calculations but have not found anything :-(
@TheWillem
@TheWillem 2 жыл бұрын
Never save money on these kind of things, I made the same mistake. 300 bar is seriously dangerous. My Tuxing is still holding up fine (I still recommend it). I disputed the seller as well and got partially refunded. Calculations with carbon fiber are more tricky. You need to know how many layers there are, how they are situated within the layers (probably completely isotropic material properties), strand thickness, etc. To conclude the story, buy high pressure tanks/ reinforcements with safety/ quality guarantee. I might try to turn the airmega into a .25 silencer. For the rest it is just pure waste. Best of luck!

same to me, but i buyed from a german seller. look for what they say to me: Good day. I'm terribly sorry for our mistake. We have updated the item but I forgot to revise the link. The item used to be 7.5mm, now it's 2.5mm. However, the material is changed to aerospace aluminum 7075, and the burst pressure test is 90mpa. So you don't need to worry. Would you mind taking 5 euro discount and as compensation and kindly help me to change the feedback? Or if you have other idea, please do not hesitate to let me know.

For the Airmega would 250 bar be ok?
@TheWillem
@TheWillem 3 жыл бұрын
I would definitely never use the airmega. Also after seeing the comment and link to the customer review (some comments below) of the tuxing seperator, I would never go over 250 bar for these seperators (the tuxing seperator exploded at ~290 bar). I am considering to make a steel cage for the tuxing filter for now. In case it would explode, at least the large pieces would not be leathal. Also, i am looking around to find an alternative for the tuxing seperator. I want 100% quality warranty that it can never explode at 300 bar.

I have one of these Tuxing filters on my HPA compressor for my PCP rifle and thought they were safe until I saw a picture on Amazon today in the reviews. If you go to Amazon and look at the Tuxing filter like yours except it has 3 materials in the filter cartridge. The first review at the bottom of the page is a guy showing pictures of a Tuxing split completely in half and he says it happened at 4300PSI. Go check it out, it’s why I came here to see what I could find out about the Tuxing and if others have burst or exploded.
@TheWillem
@TheWillem 3 жыл бұрын
This sounds really dangerous. Can you post the link? Maybe that guy got a monday morning product. However, I will not use this filter for pressures over 260 bar, just to be safe.

I’m not sure how to post a link from my phone but if you type in (Tuxing diving water separator 4500psi PCP air compressor oil water filter 300 bar) in the search bar it should come up. It’s the Tuxing that has the clear tube inside that contains charcoal, molecular sieve and desiccant in the clear plastic tube that goes inside of the Gold aluminum outer pipe. It’s the first review at the bottom of the page and was posted in March of 2020. The guy posted 2 pictures with his review showing the gold pipe split it’s entire length. It’s dam scary since I use that exact filter and have been putting 4300psi in my reinforced carbon fiber tank. However I have only used the filter 5 or 6 times. Sorry I don’t know how to leave a link from my phone, all PCP guys that use this filter to fill there tank should see the filter that failed tho.

Logic would dictate that if you suck air throgh a filter the filter will get damp. Any dry air then sucked through a damp filter will therefore become damp surely? So you would need to replace with a dry filter every time. With other materials you must still drain any moisture out or the desicant will just reabsorb it. Either way the moisture must surely be removed ??????????????? Seems they are just reciculating it!
@TheWillem
@TheWillem 3 жыл бұрын
Not entirely true. I would advise you to search for molecular sieve. It will absorp moisture and oil. After a certain usage, the molecular sieve is satisfied by these damps and requires replacement.

Can be 10 minutes clip if you exclude the unnecessary analysis. I don't even need to know the analysis. 1. Wall thickness 2. Molecular sieve Those 2 make it a better filter regardless of cost. Spare the analysis. No body cares!!!!!!!

And this is exactly the problem with humanity. These days everybody assumes statements are correct when something is said on the internet. Not being critical, not having common sense and not having knowledge of stuff kills people. Especially when you are playing around with this magnitude of pressure. concerning your two items, wall thickness is not the determining factor. A seamed pipe is structurally less decent than a seamless pipe.
