In the lead-up to Black Ops III's final zombies map, the hype was the highest the series has ever seen, before or since. Almost any map would have trouble measuring up to those expectations, and it didn't help that this was a different kind of finale than we'd seen before. Instead of ending with a massive bang and giving us something we'd never seen anything like before, like Moon or Origins, Revelations explicitly almost only gave us things we had seen. But in my opinion, what they did with adding depth to that nostalgia was transformative, and that allows it to stand on its own as a great map in the context of the series.
"A Zombies Retrospective" is a series in which I play through each Call of Duty Treyarch Zombies map chronologically, and analyze its place in the series.

What do YOU think about Revelations? Most people seem to not be fans; personally, I like it a lot, and I think the nostalgia overload works for a big finale, but if you disagree I'd love to hear some counter-arguments!

Revelations is one of the best maps of Black Ops 3, if not the series from a gameplay, layout, and design perspective. The community praised the map until the zombies chronicles pack was announced, then all of a sudden the map became a "smushed together rushed mess" that used the maps that were already in development for chronicles rather than the fun fanservice sendoff it always was. Had chronicles never came out, people wouldn't have changed their opinion. While a point could be made to complain about layout with the bounce pads being the connecting bridge between areas, the areas themselves are incredible and extremely fun to navigate, play, and train in. From a design perspective, the little areas of revelations are some of the best in the series. Oh but the boss fight was a huge disappointment and the finale EE sucked. Obscure EE steps for the sake of being obscure felt inorganic to the map and forced. Shadows fight part 2 is lame. The first part is cool with the changing map, but the boss itself is rather lackluster; especially so when compared to Nikolai or the Keeper. That's about the only downside of the map.

I believe that if BO4 wasn’t going to continue the Aether story and was going to just be Chaos that Rev would have had a more permanent and satisfying ending, but I like the way the story looped back to Origins for the purposes of perpetuating the cycle. From a gameplay standpoint, it’s pretty much designed for pure fun just like Buried was, so it’s perfect for warming up or having chill runs with friends when you’re a bit more across the map or not trying for the egg

I agree with everything here..... except for the easter egg, I've done it multiple times, i've enjoyed it, but it just doesn't make _sense_ Felt as if the devs tried to artificially make it hard to find out about as a 'let's see you solve *this* in under a day you jackasses' All the other eggs made sense story wise, there were hints to guide you on what to do, most obvious one being Sophia in GK, and in DE, you had character quotes telling you what to do, and even in the less clear ones like Shadows you can see the train of thought, but in Rev... 'shoot those graves in the right order, got it? Aight, now there's this small ass rock that'll spawn on the teleport pads, one of the least likley places you'll look, get the keeper there for some reason and then go and eat a sandwich for 5 minutes, done? Aight, throw those arnies in the apothicon's zombie spawn location for no reason, now shoot those random rocks, ' etc etc, You just had to do shit randomly and hope for the best to find out about this egg, and they could have made it better while still keeping the difficulty. They could have made the keeper rock more keeper-like and place it as decoration around all the keeper alters with an obvious spot where it's missing and has a soft blue glow like the teleport pads, they could have shown the reel stuck in the very top of the apothicon and that throwing the arnies shakes it a littlecout of it's place, they could have made the ball of light that flew when you place the kronorium have the shape of 4 eggs, just little things like that. And other than that, it doesn't make sense story wise either, why are Sophia's bones stuck in some random rocks? Why does throwing arnies in the apothicon worm gets you a reel? Why does shooting the graves spawn that rock and why tf is it so important, why do you need to put in the reels to progress the egg? In the other maps, it made sense, you did sacrifices to let the apothicons in in shadows, you helped Sophia in gorod, you travled back in time in de and inputed codes to bring dempsy back, you know why doing such and such step progressed the easter egg in the story. I know that it could all be hand waved away by "The universe is more fucked than a porn star currently" but it isn't.... satisfying. Oh, and Blundell trolled us by telling us that the staffs are returning only for them to appear for 20 seconds in the end cutscene XD.

That's 100% valid, I absolutely agree with a lot of that. I like what the Easter Egg represents, and have fun doing it, and like it *as a whole* , but I was just talking on stream the other day about how it has some of the most egregious *individual steps* in how nonsensical they are. You put it perfectly, they could've had a similar level of difficulty, but while also having a sense of progression. The goal for an EE, for me, is that you understand *why* the actions you're taking are solving problems, instead of just shooting black holes at rocks just because that's something to do. And Revelations failed there, completely agree

Revelations is personally my all time favourite map. There’s something so fun about all the fan service and old maps which makes going around the map so fun. I also think that with all the good stuff in the Box it actually makes the Box extremely fun to hit and I just love how overpowered you become by the time you’ve got everything. It’s just pure fun mixed with a lot of welcome nostalgia and I love it.

You stated that Revelations was intended to be the conclusion of the Aether story but I strongly believe that BO4 was always intended to be the true conclusion. I think BO4's rocky development and budget/time/staff slash post-launch really reinforced the misconception due to everything feeling half-baked and lackluster. There's a lot of evidence out there, but the most prominent: -The bait and switch. Moon's ending and game over screeen baited us into thinking that the story ended on a suprise grim note. Origins split the community intentionly, goading people into thinking it was all a child's imagination. Revelations was a fake out ending; the only thing that actually ended was the cycle. -Marketing. Blundell refused to advertise BO3's story as a definitive conclusion to the aether stroy - he always chose his words very carefully. He would repeatedly say things such as that they were 'putting brackets on the story', which referred to the cycle. -The cycle. Another thing often spoke about was how for BO3 & BO4 the story was pre--planned. I think this planning was done all the way back in BO2 (though obviously BO4 would have been a rough draft at that point). People forget just how much MotD and Origins foreshadows future plot beats. The biggest one being that Al can break the cycle to escape his torment. Mutterings about breaking the cycle can also be heard from Maxis in Origins. Al also has a rare line where he mentions how he keeps thinking of the name Nkolai - a bizarrely specific quote which made zero sense until BotD, wherein Nioklai became incredibly important! BO4 gets attacked a lot for 'ruining a perfect ending by retconning it' but I believe the true ending was always going to be that self-secrifice in Tag; one last bait and switch. Did I manage to convince anybody?

Its one of the best casual and high round maps. The map falls flat within its easter egg and Originality. I like the concept of meshing together maps but it needed alittle more Originality also. We needed a new wonder weapon or the summoing key specialist. The map is also incomplete from dataminers claiming moon was supposed to be in the map and we were gonna get to fight two bosses chosing between Shadowman and Dr monty according to Craig Houston in Comic con 2018. Its like the new features in Bo4 remakes couldve been in Revelations instead like the Magmagat and the lab from Blood of the dead.

fantastic video as always. I love Rev a lot, I do feel it is the perfect ending, and while I understand people's frustration at the lack of closure or whatever, it makes perfect use of the cyclical nature of the mode, as well as kind of ending on a friendly wink from the developers. WaW-BO2's tone with characters and story was almost completely farcical and comedic and absurd. Richtofen being comically gay, Nikolai's wives and vodka, the main antagonist being a little girl and her dog fluffy controlling zombies from the moon, most everything to do with Victis, etc. The ending works in two ways. You get the satisfying and emotional ending of Monty and the children being able to live on in safety at the end of the loop in Agartha. Efforts weren't for nothing, that still stands in that timeline forever. But on top of that, you get the satisfaction of finding out Primis were the actual staff 1.0 wielders in the real Great War. I think a lot of people forget now that that was an actual surprise reveal at the time. It makes Origins even more meaningful in retrospect, considering these characters are actually fighting both versions of the Great War. As I said as well, it exists as a wink from the developers as well, it's an epic ending seeing Primis with the 1.0 Staffs, but it's comical as well. Their defiance of Monty through the blood vials means that, yes the stay in existence, but have to go back to the beginning and fight yet again. The unending cycle. While Primis are the heroes, it's not their story, it's Sam and the children's. It's beautifully poetic and much more emotionally resonant than what was done on Tag imo. Anyway, fantastic video. Always nice to see someone complimenting Rev rather than trashing it.

I love that way of looking at the ending, how it works on all levels; I totally agree! You've got the metatextual commentary about the game, while still having something that actually matters emotionally to latch on to, and all wrapped up in something that feels very at home in this game, following the tradition of never giving the most satisfying answers and leaving things open-ended. Great write up, glad you agree!!

i used to be sort of a casual player until i played revelations, which was my first solo round 100. after 5 hours of somewhat tedious gameplay i felt so happy and accomplished, and any time on bo3 i was trying to up prestige master levels i knew i had to just start revelations and farm XP. after my first round 100 i started a quest to get higher rounds on every other map, not very successful with my highests being 80 on moon, 73 origins, 66 kino, 48 der eisendrache, 45 zetsubou and so on... but revelations transformed me from being just passionate about the lore to being passionate about improving my skills and doing all the Easter eggs and getting high rounds. my biggest flex is my bo3 account, with all the easter zombies calling cards and prestige master both on multi and zombies, as well as dark matter. bo3 and bo4 are my favourite games, bo2 being the third favourite for nostalgia reasons as it was the first cod i played consistently from 2013 to 2019

Revelations is probably my favorite map next to Der Riese / The Giant. Far from being a “lazy” map, I thought it was pretty brilliant and beautifully done. It feels like its own map rather than “pieces of old maps put together” like many say. The EE’s on Rev are really cool IMO including upgrading the Apothicon Servant. It gets pretty easy once you memorize the layout and master all the EE’s but can still be a good challenge while maintaining the fun. Rev has too much going on to be boring and is passion filled. Honestly would love if Treyarch brought Revelations back in BO6 with some mild updates.

I absolutely LOVE revelations. One of my favorite BO3 maps. I think it has so many fun training spots, fun lore, nostalgia fun, crazy mash-up of bosses, and (most importantly) it is not hard. You can just hop in and have a great time without figuring out the crazy stuff. I love that about the map. I love the complex Easter eggs, and Zetsubou No Shima is great because of it. . . But I also want a crazy fun map that doesn’t need a ton of set-up. The smoothness of revelations is great, I think it takes skill to make all the maps connect into one.

It would’ve been cool if they changed the ray gun into the specialist weapon and made it super powerful. Then give it some sort of charge up explosion. It would fit the theme of revelations being a museum and be a surprise due to the specialists being something special that wasn’t a gun and wasn’t some previous weapon they used. It would also allow the ray gun to shine again as a powerful weapon and allow you to have it without giving up a gun

It's a very entertaining map, the inclusion of the Apothicon Servant, Ragnoroks, Thundergun, and Lil' Arnies make it extremely fun. Visually speaking, it's one of the best maps because of how colorful, yet symmetrical the colors are. (I don't think the same can be said for DE or ZNS, although DE is still a good map overall). The story in Revelations is pretty lackluster though, it doesn't feel very concluding and left us with more questions than answers. Funnily enough, I think BO4 is a better story than BO3's.

Those people that complained about it are the same people that used to run it 24/7 when it came out I bet I personally think it’s a great map & really fun to play on with all the OP stuff. They definitely missed an opportunity tho to put four wonder weapons on the map (besides ray gun) so that every person could have a wonder weapon in a four player lobby. Imagine if it had the winter’s howl (buffed obviously) and the wunderwaffe with thunder gun & apoth servant…

I think it is cool to have the most ciphers in a map, and to make those ciphers hard to crack. There is a BIG con with that tho. We have no idea if the information in those ciphers is even worth it. They may just be hints for the story of BO4, a story... we have already seen through to the end. It's like how the MOTD loading screen cipher ended up just being a hint towards the location of Origins. Nothing grand there. It's something I wished Blundell learned later, because I believe there are some hard ass ciphers in BO4 too that nobody has given any care to solving. Just as a last thing, it has been clear that this map was also made to help ease the development of Zombies Chronicles. That DLC, while amazing for both value and gameplay, may have gave Treyarch the wrong idea, since BO4 was nothing BUT remakes for the Aether story. I think that had to less people being interested as it went on, but the ending carried it.

Always had the opinion of love the layout but really wanted a different ending. But overtime that second opinion has slowly changed. I think at the time the hype built around the entire thing made me forget the core of zombies stories. Part of me just wanted a nice happy ending for characters that had such fun serious story arcs especially since typically in zombies that never happens. But now looking back I appreciate how they let us have an ending where the cycle continues especially knowing that in the next game the cycle ends.

I think the point about the boss fight is really the only thing I disagree with here, like yeah the mini boss is fun an unique too, but I think even the combination of them fail at feeling like a satisfying end battle, Tag Der Toten does the concept way better, where its not necessarily a traditional boss fight, but it still feels like a very climatic end battle. For me the map has a bit less "staying power" too, like yes its a new map and plays very differently, but having it be a bunch of maps thrown together did make the map get old pretty quick.
