'Rusty' is the name given by the Twelfth Doctor to a lone Dalek that appears to have turned its back on the Dalek cause after suffering severe damage to its casing. This Dalek features prominently in the first Dalek story of the Twelfth Doctor's era, 'Into the Dalek', in which the Doctor is miniaturised and goes inside Rusty's casing. But what is the history of this unique Dalek defector?

My personal interpretation of the "You are a good Dalek" line is that Rusty actually *could* perceive the good in the Doctor, but couldn't understand it. So he latched onto the next best thing; hatred of evil. The Doctor is a good Dalek because he possesses all the capacity for destruction of a Dalek, but also understands goodness and kindness. A thing Rusty himself can't do.

I always thought if Dalek Sec had survived, a Reformed Cult of Skaro would have been a fabulous idea. A new Cult based on the idea of the Daleks evolving beyond their destructive nature, a set of reformed, mutated and evolved Daleks that saw the flaws in their original nature. Rusty would have fit in that idea perfectly

I believe he survived as he is connected to davros and when the doctor regenerated davros in the the witch’s apprentice sec would’ve been affected meaning he could’ve been revived although he was mutated potentially meaning he could not be brought back

Rusty was made so well, I think it’s one of the few truly creative things Moffat does with the Daleks.

Rusty's the most unique Dalek concept Moffat's ever written into the series That's not to say it's a totally unique idea, I'm pretty sure we've all thought of a "Good" Dalek, but to see it on screen, and with the context as to how it became/stayed "good" is what I like about Rusty As you said, Rusty's not good, he simply hates Daleks more than anything else while simultaneously being open to hating/killing anything else (as he almost killed the Doctor entering his chamber on his last episode). That's what I like, it still has a twisted morality, but one that doesn't ignore all the horrible deeds the Daleks have done. That's why I think reintroducing Rusty as a companion would be stellar. The Doctor could attempt to teach Rusty to embrace other emotions instead of simply hating everything, while Rusty fights off this idea and continues to hate for the sake of hating. At some point, they could have Rusty face other challenges that would impede his hateful desires, while simultaneously grow a stronger reliance on the Doctor. Not just as an ally or support in the heat of battle, but as a friend. I literally thought up in my head a head canon story for what happened to Rusty before his debut appearance and after his eventual/potential last appearance. It would seriously be such a wasted opportunity to put him aside and let him gather dust instead of be the instigator for potential Doctor/Dalek companion stories

I've love to have Rusty come back as an Anti-Hero of some sorts, assisting communities that are under Dalek threat and other communities that are not in danger threat he ignores. He's still xenophobic, just not a fanatic like the rest of the Daleks and more co-operative with other aliens. Maybe we'd see him helping out Unit on Earth for a unique story arc.

Fun fact: Rusty actually WAS in the Dalek Asylum before the 11th Doctor Destroyed it. He survived and escaped, of course. The fact that it was canon in the Dalek History Book, makes me intrigued. As for me, Rusty isn't truly good, but I like to think he has the capacity for it. As for the Doctor himself, his hatred actually means something and is rightly directed, because behind all of it is his love for the universe as a whole, and how much pain it causes him to see it suffer or destroyed for something directionless as Dalek Hatred.

I find Rusty to basically be the most tragic of all the Doctor's encounters and endeavors. I feel like his episode is supposed to harken back to the Season 1 "Dalek" episode; both first responding to the Doctor with questions of his identity - With Metalatron, it was to confirm if he was _The Doctor._ But with Rusty, he genuinely asks, "Are you _my Doctor?"_ - Rusty, who has no real concept of who or what he is, is sincerely asking i the man who has come to see him is a medical professional who is here to help him. One thing I don't care for with the Daleks is how overpowered they are and how feared they should be. It has a contrasting effect every time the Doctor manages to beat them; instead of making the Doctor look "clever," it instead makes the Daleks look "incompetent," because it's usually their own weaknesses as Daleks that the Doctor exploits. So how are the Daleks the Doctor's Greatest Adversary? Well, it's not a battle of power, strength, or even a battle of wits...It's a philosophical one. It seems prevalent throughout New-Who starting with the 9th Doctor, but I feel like it's been going on since as far back as the Fourth Doctor - in Genesis of the Daleks with the Doctor questioning if wiping out an entire race before they've begun can be justified. And all throughout the new series across the years, the Daleks have been used to question the Doctor's - as well as the audience's philosophy; their moral standing on certain issues. If the Doctor hates the Daleks and wants to see them completely wiped out, is he any different from the Daleks themselves? And if we the audience are applauding and cheering the notion of him completely wiping them out, what does that make us? It's why when Metalatron says, "You would make _a Good Dalek,"_ it is so cutting to the Doctor. It's the Dalek admitting that if the Doctor was of the genetically pure race of the Daleks, his hatred would make him the _best of them._ And he says this with a hint of admiration of the Doctor's hatred and desire to destroy them; basically what he means is, "You _should be_ a Dalek." It makes the doctor question what his hatred of the Daleks is turning him into. Which is why i think that when it comes to the Daleks, the Doctor doesn't outright fight them; thwart them,? Yes. But mostly in ways that cause their plans to collapse on themselves. But the Doctor doesn't personally seek to ensure that they don't escape nor try to finish them off himself. Why? Because the Doctor has to believe that there is hope. I feel like the Daleks are among one of the most frustrating adversaries for not just the Doctor, but the writers. They behave like a hive-mind but given enough time, Daleks prove they are capable of independent thought and reflection. The Doctor _needs_ Daleks to be in that state, because a Dalek that can think for itself, can be _reasoned with._ And perhaps if a Dalek can be reasoned with, it can be taught empathy, compassion, and perhaps even joy...mercy, pity. The Doctor wants to believe that if a Dalek is capable of changing - letting go of the all encompassing hate that compels them - then maybe one day he too can let go of his hatred of them. He wants to let go of his anger and hatred of them, because he doesn't want to be _like them._ The Daleks have time and time again shown, that they actually _admire_ the Doctor for his _hatred of them._ They see his hatred, _as something beautiful._ And that's something the Doctor wants to be rid of. The problem is...The Daleks unfortunately _are what they are,_ even in a special case like Rusty. A Dalek that was capable of seeing the Universe with a fresh eye, and not polluted by the Daleks' hatred. The Doctor saved Rusty, hoping that it meant that Daleks could be reformed, should the circumstances be repeated. Instead, Rusty diverted back to default. The Doctor merging minds with him was a last, desperate effort to try and reform Rusty; and while Rusty could see the universe through the Doctor's eyes...he stumbled upon the one thing that wouldn't help; the Daleks. As I said, the Daleks consider the Doctor's _hatred of them_ to be something Beautiful. And with Rusty not only seeing it, but _experiencing it_ through the Doctor's Mind...it was _divinity._ This experience was Rusty _seeing the face of God_ - something so overwhelmingly beautiful that it blocks out all other things. And with this hatred, Rusty now had a new purpose. The sad thing is, instead of reforming Rusty or getting a Dalek that was on their side...Rusty simply became a Dalek with _one last thing to hate._ Now, Rusty is literally the most hateful creature in the Universe; Rusty could ultimately end all of the Daleks and then go on to end the rest of the Universe - being the only thing left. And it's all the Doctor's Fault... And that's why I think the episode ends with the clincher...The one last call back to the original "Dalek" Episode with Eccelston. "I am _not_ a Good Dalek: _You Are a Good Dalek."_ That right there is a crushing blow to the Doctor's psyche. He's spent so long trying to prove that he isn't like them; that he can be better than them, that he can let go of his hatred of them. But it's that very same hatred of them, that led to Rusty being what he is... The Doctor is like a Dalek. It's upsetting because the show has done this song and dance number a lot; every time you get an episode where it seems like the Doctor can reach a Dalek on a personal level, make it see the error of its ways and get it to change...It all goes wrong. The writers know that if the Daleks change too much, then the show probably cannot continue to use them; and the show cannot go on long without them. So they keep reinforcing the Status Quo. Me personally? I'd like to see a story where the Daleks _can change._ - Stories like with Dalek Sec and the Cult of Skarro were fascinating, because the Daleks could change. But it all keeps getting undone. And the more it keeps getting undone, it makes me wonder why the Doctor should even bother, or why I should get invested.

Rusty is definitely BF material, maybe in one where a dalek threat is quashed and he has to cooperate with a planet's natives to follow retreating daleks. Will his instinct to kill more daleks overide his capacity to work with non-daleks, like those who misunderstand him. Throw in a surprising BF regular when a band of colonists turn against him without telling other survivors? Would he just exterminate everyone, or can he taught to understand? Dang, a quarry of BF potential revolving around our 'good' dalek!

I feel like it would’ve been a nice callback if Rusty was somehow the same Dalek as the one from the Eccleston Story. I feel like it could’ve opened the door for some emotional moments, him asking where Rose is for instance. Idk, I feel like it would’ve been cool is all.

I like to think during their invasion of Earth in 2164, the Daleks found old shattered bronze casings from Day of the Doctor, Series 4 etc that had simply been kept in storage, and that's how they acquired the bronze design before the Time War (albeit not as the standard casing)

Dalek are highly intelligent but are limited by their lack of a personality or to be more accurate lack of imagination, because a dalek knows almost everything how a dalek is unable to think or to imagine new alternatives or different solutions which is where dalek drones behave like autonomous robots, that will continue their attacks without considering other alternatives and also Rusty’s highly motivated to kill as many daleks as possible whilst also being careful enough to minimize the level of risk to himself and again Rusty’s just a reprogrammed dalek where his only changes were to target priorities and more creative mindset, If it wasn’t for Rusty’s hatred towards his own kind
