Everyone said "go into this movie cold if you can" and I am SO glad I did. I had no idea what was going to happen next, and man was it a wild ride. I've recommended it to a bunch of people since then, and I say the same thing. Go in cold!

I also went into it blind and I'm so glad I got to experience that twist shift

I loved this breakdown. I never really saw Mother as the villian but Justin Long. Most of the time he is cast as the nice guy in films so having him be this selfish evil person was a nice change of things. Frank at the end is the monster and we are left to see what devastation his crimes have done to the community.

The explanation for the first half of the movie was great. It really did feel 'textbook' suspenceful. A tad cringey but in a good way. All of it builds and builds into this complete 180 for us. An amazing set up that I have a better appreciation for now.

Enjoyed this! Barbarian was low key one of the top flicks of 2022 for me, you've summed it up really well and the BTS with the make-up was cool too

I personally think the mother and Frank are alone down there. I think there are probably more competent and vulnerable members of Frank's household (trying to word that carefully 😂) Someone was obviously venturing out of the basement and spying on Keith and Tess and clearing up Keith's body. So there are maybe others who are less aggressive, more frightened of interaction with the outside world and maybe even afraid of Mother herself, who remain hidden and only do domestic tasks, but we're perhaps curious of Keith and Tess' presence

Off the subject of the movie itself; The trend of films getting cool sounding titles that in no way relate to the story is pretty annoying.

The title refers to where they live. They're Barbarians because they live on Barbery.

@whatthehorror That's still quite a convoluted stretch. I'm assuming that the street is named after the "Barbary States", which in turn was named after the Berber people, none of which have any relation to the concept of a "barbarian", in its historic or modern contexts. Edit: upon further research, there is a real "Barbary St" in Detroit, which serves as the setting of this film. It's an explanation, but it bothers my internal pedant.

If I remember right, they also named it Barbarian as a weird not-quite-anagram of Air BnB

@@mikeosredkar8804 That's actually clever if true.

Frank and the Mother are barbarians in the literal sense as well as where they live. "a member of a people not belonging to one of the great civilizations" they had their own little way of living, Separate from the rest of us.
