Today, we're going to get to the bottom of who really invented no complies. A lot of people will say it was John Lucero, but there are a few other options out there. It really depends on how you define 'no comply.' I cover all of that and more on this episode!

Some stuff I thought of while watching this... O and Neil Blender had a band together called Olivelawn. The number 43 is also used in the bar business. It stands for someone who is still allowed in the bar but is treading on thin ice. 86'd being banned from the bar. Also, I used to skate sponsored division in street contests back in the 80's. During practice at a contest in 88' in Ocean City MD, I was doing fs 180 No Comply's popping them over a foot high and putting my foot back on while the board was still at it's peak in the air. Sean Sheffey saw this and loved it. I showed him how I did it. Still one of my favorite skateboarding memories!

Jeff Grosso talks about No Comply in one of his Loveletters to skateboarding videos(I think). He said/joked that the reason they are called No Comply is because when you smash the board into the curb to get air, you don't comply with the curb.

Ben Job should definitely get a mention here. He was the first person to "flip" a regular 43. And just for the books, a "No Comply" is done off a curb or off flat and go straight. 43's or "Step Hops" are done off flat and turn. Two separate tricks. I know you outlined that, but they are what they are. But check out Ben Job, Shackle Me Not. Mind melter. No curb no comply's over stuff, as well as no comply boardslides, one footed wallrides, wallride "nollie" out to fakie, and an incredible yo-yo/invert on a regular crust bank. Complete mind melter. And then "disappeared"

I remember seeing Otis doing step hop 180s at the top of the low side of the bank in the Etiwanda Super Ditch(aka Back Door) in 1987. It was strange to see because he was a big guy and did this trick consistently that I'd never seen before. A No Comply off of nothing to 180 was new for me. I asked what he called it and I distinctly remember him say it was a "No Handed Boneless One".

Nollie No-Comply late varial flips. You start with your front foot in the heelside pocket of your nose with your toes facing forward at a 45° angle and your back foot near your back truck with your toes hanging off, your shoulders opened up. Then you slide your back foot off toeside and give that nose a little pop while also pushing the board forward a little bit. After your board has popped you lift up your front foot and pull it back in a way that you hit your board with the inner side of your shoe (right behind the ball of your foot) on the heel side rail somewhere between the front truck and the middle. Your board should then flip like a nollie varial kickflip. Catch it with your front foot, hop back on with your back foot and you´re done. It´s pretty weird but it´s a good looking trick and it keeps people wondering what you just did. Also it´s not nearly as hard as it sounds.

In Norfolk VA late 1980's we called the 180degree version (frontside or backside) 'twenty two'. We'd say "Ray Barbee's second solo trick in Public Domain was a frontside 22 to revert.".

I like Battagliotti hand flips - basically a no comply Sal flip. Mike Vallely told me that's what they are called, according to him (he did one and said the name - which I mistook as a mattagliotti flip - in a trick tip video years ago which I can no longer find, so I asked him online a few years ago and he responded). They're fun to do into manuals, on banks, and down stairs and drops.

in 1986 i learned the no comply as a curb bonk straight no hand boneless. some time later i learned a 43 as a 180 no comply on flat. we never mixed up the names. a no comply was one thing, and a 43 was considered a completed different trick. i was surprised years later when i heard kids calling a 43 a no comply. i was like nooo they're different tricks with different names! never called them step hops

My favorite no-comply trick is the No-Comply Impossible (although judging by Instagram and KZfaq, it's now called the Strawberry Shake). Probably because it was one of the first tricks I learned when I started skating again and was still relearning how to Ollie. I just like the 1-2 step motion and the way the board wraps around your foot when you do it clean.

So many fun variations- the frontside shifty is fun- backside 360 (air) or yes, evento revert- ollie to no comply (ollie up and then stephop the obstacle for bonus height) no comply flips as one wheel hits the curb and creates a flip-going super fast and straight off the knee on flat where the board gets verticle off the knee. Up stairs and down stairs etc...etc...!

@prodigaljess 3 жыл бұрын
When I learned them (around the Ray Barbee era), they were called "43 to shifty"...the shifty being a revert or pivot, I guess. I learned them in both directions, frontside and backside (43 and 34?). They were super fun. Want to learn them again. I'm much older now though, so taking it slow. Great content. Very well researched and presented.

Straight no comply over concrete bench when you time it right and have enough speed you bounce off the front edge and sail over bench if you hit it right the from of the board hits knee and swings down just before landing, second favorite is the 43 shifty( so stylish) and the slide 43 crazy how far people are taking all those step off tricks today .

So great that no-complies finally are coming back. Since the early days of this trick, I enjoyed it a lot, and it provides countless opportunities for inventing varitions; no other trick, not even the ollie does. In fact, it seems the aspect of true style in skateboarding, established in the late 80s to early 90s, is being apreciated, understood, and implemented by todays generation into their skateboarding again. I think the tricks transporting the essence of what skateboarding makes unique, meaning the style and soul, will all come back and hopefully stay forever. No trick should be called outdated again. We'll see great one foot ollies and nollies again in the future. Only one I would leave in the past is the street hand plant, but that is only my personal thing...

I think the FS No Comply 180 is probably my favorite, although it seems to be everybodies favorite. It's funny, I was always fascinated with No Comply and its variations; I started trying to learn the variations around 2007. I do think they will become unpopular soon, since everyone is doing them. I think things tend to die out when they are overused. Since I noticed people like to do the Frontside No Comply 180, I always thought that might be invented first. The consensus seems to be that it is easier than a normal No Comply. Great video by the way, keep up the good work.

Hi! I've no idea what is real name for this trick. But i call it Fakie BS 180 Bean Plant. If u wanna learn this i can say that feeling pretty the same with Fakie BS No Comply Bigspin. You're just jumping with the pop, like you wanna jump off your skateboard. Jump off with the pop, try to catch it with your front hand(right for goofy and left for regular) and land for a while on your front foot(also right for goofy and left for regular). Then practice and try combine this in one smooth action. Also, with enough practice try to plant your foot just for a moment only for jump. P.S. Sorry for my English, It's not good at all.

Before there were two kick tail skateboards, if I was riding the board backwards, I would one foot ollie 180 the board to get it in the right direction. To me, the 43 was kind of based on that and of course the boneless. I would imagine it would be invented by all the people mentioned with skaters just dicking around with their skateboards. The favorite one I ever did was a backside 43 no look to tail after having some beers and trying it over and over and then finally making it. The 43 is a classic trick.

Either way, I love the trick and all it's variations when done going fast, and caught in the air. I'm not a fan of "tic-tac's" at any time, but when someone "tic-tac's" after a no-comply...Ewwww yuck! just my opinion though.

If no comply originally meant no understand wouldn't it be no compute? Because, comply means to obey a command and compute means to calculate or figure something out. I wonder if it was no compute at first but they just started saying no comply at some point by accident and it just stuck. It can be funny how things change like that sometimes, but we'll never know for sure.
