I think that it could be good, however, if it ends up becoming like mobile ftp where you pay to not be shit on all the time i think it will be bad. if it doesnt end up like this, i think it could make games much more popular, especially with people who cant afford to buy several each year. personally, i dont like the battle royal format, but i can understand why others do.

Negative. It promotes even further the trend of games as a service and drives more companies into that mindset. Less publishers are willing to take on traditional single player games and instead focus on "the new thing" that they can monetize into the ground.

@jamesruth100
@jamesruth100 5 жыл бұрын
@@_D_W_ Like, I think it's less about the core audience being kids and more about how they achieved similar saturation among that intended audience; he could have substituted the Wiggles with a nearly endless list of previous juggernauts (as an example, the jonas brothers) and it would've been the same argument. Like, you can walk up to basically any kid in a western country and, unless they've lived the most sheltered life imaginable, they are going to be AT ABSOLUTE MINIMUM aware of ninja's content and the exact same situation would've probably played out if you targeted kids in the 90s and possibly early 2000s and asked them about the Wiggles (although I'd argue that the Wiggles might not have had quite as much saturation just due to how the world was only starting to become heavily interconnected and we hadn't reached quite the point where groups like the Wiggles could transcend past the reliance on the traditional marketing machine). In both cases you'd have people who are fans, people who are detractors, and people who are just bystanders that don't have any horse in the race despite knowing about the subject. I think that's what he was trying to say, that they're comparable in how much sheer influence they have.

It's a fun game mode. Red Dead Redemption could add one for example. The question is, is it economical for the publisher to include a BR mode? I wish Amazon had a cheap solution/service for this type of problem. BR is not the problem or a problem. It is essentially a massive PVP game mode. Are game modes to blame if some games aren't selling well? Heck you could probably make a chess BR is you're willing enough or have the resources to make one, ofcourse not all games with a BR mode would become a hit.

@@TeleTorben this is subjective, while you may think a game isn't worth a specific value, another might say it is. The better graphics might be enough for some people to enjoy the games. Pokemon hasn't had a main pokemon game on a console and animal crossing hasn't been on a console for ages. So, really, just those facts alone might be enough for people to pay full price.

Gotta love console exclusivity, milking old games by destroying and using emulator sites, artificially limiting supply, breaking apart fan games, and not supporting their games' scenes. Plus botw and odyssey were both jumping on the open world trend.
@lupvirga
@lupvirga 5 жыл бұрын
@@littlebigphil One, Zelda was ORIGINALLY open world to begin with, SECONDLY Odyssey isn't far of from Mario 64 just an evolution of it. Lastly, Console exist because not everyone can afford to pay thousands of dollars to make sure their pc can play a game, not to mention the HACKERS. finally, everyone on a console is playing with the same specs which means you don't have to worry about your friends not being able to play a game. Consoles have many strengths that PC doesn't have.
@littlebigphil
@littlebigphil 5 жыл бұрын
@@lupvirga Past the NES, Zelda's "open world" was much more like a metroidvania than a western RPG style open world. It gave the player choice of navigation, but the important and linear narrative with the gating mechanics meant that it didn't offer the sandbox experience that the open world trend is known for. There's a reason that Nintendo went back to Mario 64 and NES Zelda for inspiration, and it's because they worked well with the trend. Additionally, there's still large differences between Mario 64 and Odyssey. Mario 64 is mostly linear stars stitched together into OK-sized worlds and then a hub world on top. Odyssey has large canvas worlds with the moons sprinkled throughout them, and then a level select. It's a completely different development style and game feel. Console exclusivity as in, Nintendo games aren't released on non-Nintendo consoles or PCs. That has nothing to do with whether or not they should make a console. But if you want to go down that road let's frame the question as "Should anyone buy a console in the world where companies don't artificially restrict what platforms they produce for?". Yes. The people who should are the *intersection* of three groups: people who won't already be owning a PC for non-gaming purposes, people who don't want to play games that are only possible on PC, and people who are within a specific budget range. If you are already going to be owning a PC, then upgrading it to at least console strength is going to be cheaper than buying a console. And are you really going to bring up hackers when we're talking about Nintendo games? What are the hackers going to do? Cheat themselves out of the experience of getting all the moons? Competitive FPS games are the only ones that have problems with hackers, and non-coincidentally, that's a style of game that's a much better experience on PC. Plus it's not like hackers don't exist on consoles. And if your friends couldn't afford a system that could play the games, then on consoles they couldn't play any games, while on PC they could play browser games or old games.

But most games nowadays take "story" as just cutscenes and endless dialogue which just makes you think "Ok,now the game will start....ok now the game will start....ok ok,any minute now the game will start". If a player is wondering when the hell they might get to play the game again,you're not doing a game right. Dark souls is a prime example of this done right. Indeed. I don't think single player games will die, there will still be a demand. It will just be a case of most of the established publishers and developers not being able to connect with said demand, dying or turning to BR games (most likely a mix of those) and a few years of drought while we wait for new companies to take up the torch.

Survival of the most exploitative. The old marketing methods are actually getting recognized and pushed away from and this f2p type market is replacing the old. The neverending cycle of sadness, BUT, when these switches happen, I do believe it usually has a net gain for consumers as the publishers scramble to figure out why nobody loves them. Luckily, not all games can go to this new method. We see this happen with fallout 76; it flopped.

Ehhhhhhh yes and no. I would say that by and large the fault lies more with publishers than devs. It's things like EA and Activision killing studios by pushing deadlines, forcing devs to cut content to open up monetization options, killing creative liberty with bullshit "market research" groups...that kinda shit. Most devs want to make good games and while I totally understand that a game dev and good businessman aren't always the same thing it's the corporatization of the industry that's really killing it. It's why some of the best games to come out in the last year have been from smaller studios not associated with these massive publishers. As for the whole f2p thing....I think it's just a fad. It will die as gamers grow up. I really believe a large portion of the f2p market thrives off kids and teenagers that have no real income and instead rely on their parents for purchases. It's not that they don't want to play $60 games its that convincing a parent to give them $60 vs $5 every week or so is harder. At least here in America. Mobile gaming is absolutely massive overseas so it's not surprising the f2p market thrives there (and why EA is in talks with TenCent to bring Apex to China...don't be surprised if Apex gets a mobile offshoot)

I think what happened was, Respawn had no idea their game was going to blow up as big as it did. So right now, we haven’t gotten as much updates as much, but I think they had a season 1 already planned out, but because of the growth of the game, they probably realized just adding skins and characters might’ve been too simple to add in, so that’s why they’re taking their time with updates because they understand Quality over Quantity unlike other companies which is why I think Respawn gets way more respect compared to other companies/corporations. Apex is a great game too in general so, as long as I’m satisfied, let them take their time on fully functional updates. And also most of the Devs made COD2, COD4, MW2, and other amazing CODs, basically blowing up COD to be amazing back then, but after they left, I think it’s funny how it started to decline lol, but anyways, players/gamers/the community has high hopes for Respawn so I’m excited to see the future of where the game can go.

I believe games that are multiplayer or have online only functionalities should be anywhere between free-to-play to $40 max. The way the industry has been treating them as LiVe SeRvIcEs with constant updates, loot boxes, and micro transactions should call for the base game price to be low. Especially after Anthem Genderfield 76, $60 is way too much considering how their prices dropped in less than a month.

That's a high constant flow of revenue for something that doesn't take much money or time to push out. Imagine how much money Xbox would make if they only charged for live. Or, PlayStation at that. Loved the rest of the video, but the analysis of the changing retail environment is horse shit. Tying the death of Sears and the growth of amazon and other internet retailers to income inequality is not a legitimate answer. Sears and other brick and mortar stores are dying because they have failed to innovate and take advantage of the internet retail space. Sears WAS the amazon of the last century. With their massive mail and phone order catalog, you could order ANYTHING, from food to farm equipment to cars and houses, anything was available. If anyone has ever browsed sears's website over the last few years, you would have noticed how much of a complete disaster it was. nobody orders things over the phone anymore, its all done on the internet, and sears refused to adapt to that major industry shift. Amazon offers things on average CHEAPER than department stores, so the notion that online retailers only cater to the rich is just factually incorrect. The reason the gaming industry has made the unwelcome changes it has, is because of the expansion of internet access, and because the primary motivation of any company is to make money. they keep trying ways to get the most profit out of the development and release of a game as possible. its really that simple. They're able to release incomplete games with the promise of constant future updates, but once the money has already come in, there's no incentive for dev's to actually FINISH a game.

I think I half agree with what you said about businesses. Department stores are losing business because they haven't adapted to internet retail but there are other ways to gain business (even if they haven't been thought of yet). Expanding service quality and content for instance, or gaining product exclusivity to attract people. Internet retail either ends up being cheaper or more convenient for the buyer. Department stores can't universally compete in those regards but with a widening income gap there is a smaller group to target that would want to take advantage of a more expensive model that provided a better value. Like if a department store had a service in their hygiene/health department that could make custom shampoos with specific ingredients and smells for your needs, that would be an incredible service to pay for (at obvs a higher price) but the income gap means more people desire a delivery of head and shoulders off of Amazon to their doorstep. Long story short, the average department store will continue to lose business to internet retail because too many rich seek exclusivity and extreme value that they don't provide and too many lower class who desire cheap and convenient paths. Even if department stores want to innovate, the current climate doesn't support the innovation of their model but instead supports them changing their model to mimic the Amazons out there. Though I guess there are always exceptions when you talk in general, but at the same time a lot of store chains are closing locations every year because in many places there just isn't enough middle class buyers nor incentive for them

You're spot on about the back half of your post. I'm a contractor by profession, and I've always gotten paid and paid my guys based on a bid price negotiated and set at the beginning of the job to be released upon satisfactory completion of that job. I vastly prefer this over hourly work for a whole big shitload of different reasons, all based on experiences I've encountered both being a regular day laborer and construction worker at the very bottom of the rung sweeping floors on a jobsite in my teens to the supervisory and skilled labor roles I have today. But all those reasons basically boil down to this - if you pay people an hourly rate for a job, a lot of people will stretch that job out as long as they possibly can to milk it for the very last cent they could earn without getting fired or reprimanded. If you tell someone "here's the things I want done and how I want 'em done and you're not getting paid until the shit gets done to the letter of the agreed upon terms", then they're going to do the fastest job they can as best they possibly can because they know they have to deliver a *finished* product. I might just be a glorified saw jockey that finally earned a collar for his shirt, but even my dumb ass knows that finish work on a job is what really determines whether it was worth a fuck or not to have been done by whomst'd've done it for the money they did it for. I don't care if you're cutting trim with the finest miter blades hand-hewn by elvish blacksmithes and delivered straight into this plane of existence by the hand of Legolas himself, if you don't paint and caulk the shit then at the end of the day all you did was nail some fancy wood to the bottom of the wall. My long-ass unrelated rant is basically me saying this - when you play early access or unfinished games, you're just throwing money and time away on an inferior experience. It's literally a game company saying "we're too shitty to do all the work the right way and deliver you a complete product, and you're too dumb to tell the difference".

ok but the point is that he said if the game were to "adapt ", as you put it, there would be a gap in the game industry. just like how stores moved to having a online presents the gaming industry is moving to a battle royal and free to play presents. in both of these cases those who do not adapt loose because the void that they are leaving in their respective communities. amazon becomes cheaper and beats the competition. games that are free to play and have in-game currency direct the traif of the consumer's money into in-game purchases instead of other games. that is why there are fewer story games or game with different game mods. just like how many store opened oniline presents games have opened a battle royal presents ... (ex-cod csgo pubg fortnight apex... ) fortnight and apex are the same as Amazon and eBay in the sense they are changing the market and taking away other company models where it is storyline or brick and mortar.

EA openly stated that Battlefield V underperformed because there was no Battle Royale at launch. Not the part where they said “hey don’t buy the game if you don’t like it” but the part where it didn’t have Battle Royale. You have to remember publishers are... “special minded”.

I feel games are becoming more and more...uninspired? Like it's almost the same thing over and over, sequels, remakes, or live service model that doesn't live up to expectations. The way the game industry has become and evolved over the years, no longer do you see developers/publishers try to take risks in their games in trying to create something refreshing or possibly innovative in their respective genre. I don't know why that is, since there's many factors to it, but it's starting to seem every game that's coming out is doing the exact same thing(save Nintendo, since they've always been ones to do their own thing). I guess we've gotten to a point there's only so much we can do with games now, that the only best thing is to focus on PvPish games, since that seems to be what really rakes in the money.

XDarkEcho Money. It’s all about money. To create a large and inspiring game, it requires a large sum of time and resources which only publishers can provide. These publishers are only interested in making money and helping their investors so the risk of creating something new is not a viable strategy. It’s easier to say, “Game A worked pretty well so let’s make Game A part 2 with loot boxes and other micro transactions.” There are studios that do want to branch out and try new things but to maintain the quality that AAA games have set over the past decade, it’s nearly impossible.

@@peterr8586 I hear you on that, and that indeed is a problem with the gaming industry, unfortunately. I miss how we used to have so many genres on the market back then, where saturation of one sole genre was rare(i mean, I guess shooters have always been the biggest genre in the West, but still had a LOT of different games to choose from). I mean, you'd have RTS, Shooters, Platformers, RPGs, JRPGs, etc flooding the gaming market; everyone wanted to be the next big hit on their respective genre and competition was plentiful! Not now, studios have shut down, been bought out by bigger publishers/developers, and the creative minds that once shaped the industry have left to do their own thing, or retired. It really saddens me, because this has happened in such a short amount of time too; roughly 10-15 years. As you said, corporate greed and appeasing investors, has warped the way games are made as a model now, more so now than ever before.

Agreed. You don’t see creativity for example what all the Bungie devs did for Halo. The emotional story telling, music, well thought out design.

I could see how you'd think that if you're a normie. But here's the kicker, EA, Activision, Ubisoft and Blizzard arent the only companies making games. Shocking i know. If you want good games, just go watch compilations of upcoming games. Usually anything made by other companies don't have microtransactions or loot boxes. Look at biomutant or the last night or even granblue fantasy. So many fantastic games but normies are always crying because they only know about games that are shoved in their faces. Maybe instead of being told whats coming out you go and look for yourself :D
