Julian Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern Munich on Thursday with Thomas Tuchel announced as his immediate replacement. Raphael Honigstein and Jan Aage Fjørtoft joined Mark Chapman to explain...

Seems like one of those where Bayern wanted him because at the time he was the best coach in the league especially when you don't include Flick, Klopp and Tuchel weren't available and it also allowed them to weaken a direct rival which they often do at player level as well. However I think the issue throughout his time was that J.N is very much a modern coach with modern ideas in and outside of football where as Bayern strike me as a very traditional club, they like people to come in and conform to their way of thinking, I remember reading that Oliver Kahn wasn't impressed by what he wears on the touchline, so it was probably doomed from the start and JN was probably always fighting an uphill battle with the hierarchy at Bayern. That's probably also why he fit in so well at Leipzig and Hoffenheim because they're much more modern clubs without traditions that he could go against and therefore they conformed to him. I think he could work really well at Spurs because I doubt they'd care about what he does off the field so long as he doesn't embarrass the club or doesn't win games. I personally see him going to Liverpool in the future but If I were Tottenham I'd reach out to him immediately and look to tie him down to join in the summer and give him whatever he wants.

My guess was she was just a freak and chased him or vice versa and couldn't think clearly. Crazy though he might never have a chance like that again in his career as maybe results would have got better in time and who knows what he could of achieved. Silly man

One way or another, the board is admitting it made a mistake. Which one was it: hiring him, or firing him? Frankly, I'm a bit disappointed since I see Bayern as a well-run club not prone to rash, short-term decisions. Not winning the league is not the end of the world even for them, if leads to long-term success. Transition isn't usually seamless; you have to withstand the bumps to get to a new phase of success. Arsenal and Arteta are a good example.

Bayern inexplicably blew a nine-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table. THAT is the primary reason why Nagelsmann got the boot. Secondarily, Bayern felt they needed to grab a high-profile manager (Tuchel) before he signed with another club. We'll see how THAT works out. We all remember the Carlo Ancelotti debacle.

Lampard as Interim Manager, It makes sense. He knows most of the Squad and he knows Chelsea FC. Nagelsmann will NOT be taking the Chelsea Managers roll. For me, if not Mourinho, then Enrique, although Gallardo would also be a great choice, even if both are unproven in the PL, they know the ropes and what it takes. But if Chelsea are thinking Enrique, why not now? So it must be him dragging his feet, for whatever reason, so that is not good. I would have thought getting a full time Manager in now would be the best idea, that way he can bed-in and be ready for next Season, while having some idea which direction to go in. Not sure what Chelsea did before against Wolves has to do with the here and now and the words "clutching at and straws" springs to mind, but hey-ho. Paez would be a hell of a signing, "if" they can pull it off. Growing and will become a Superstar. He is not just a goal scorer, he is a goal maker, but....we all know Chelsea and their signing goal-scorers' record, so forgive me if I do not get too excited until I actually see it work. Hojlund would be another one and has the potential to be as good as, if not better than, Haaland and he is only 20. Of course we are talking Chelsea and their rep as "Graveyard for Strikers", so we will have to see.

There seems to be an issue recently of a disconnect between management and one person. Kovac, Hansi Flick now Naglesmann. Managers have complained about not getting the right level of support in the market, there’s one person who’s responsible with this and that’s Salihamidzic. Flick really doesn’t like him, I’m sure down the line Nagelsmann will echo the same sentiment- he comes across as a DoF who thinks he should be the manager and dictate transfer policy. He talks and unsettles the fan base which contributes to sacking a manager they paid €34m RBL for. Surely there has be questions about Salihamidzic and his influence?

What wasn't mentioned is that FC Bayern had an unbalanced squad. They had 3 midfielders, nearly 20 wingers, not a single striker for the penalty area, and only one goalkeeper, along with just 4 center-backs but 10 full-backs. After this season, Bayern lost their best players because they had had enough. This disaster didn't spare Uli Hoeneß, as both the sporting director and Kahn were fired. Kahn had fired Anchelotti, Flick and many more after overperforming, it was so bad under Kahn, that Club legends like Tiger Hermann left the club.

This is probably the best analysis I've heard. Bayern's board lacks self-awareness. They signed Nagelsmann to a 5-year contract as though they would have the patience to let him embed his philosophy. They are far too anxious and have too big of egos to do that. I hope club members respond and reshuffle the board, because it just doesn't work having a board that wants to fight basically every manager if there's even an inkling of an issue. It makes the club look unprofessional, since even top coaches get disrespected and mistreated.

Well if any of you watched any Bayern matches you would see that they do create chances , but they cant finish them. Is it Julians fault that he lost Lewandowski and his replacmenent is a guy who saved more goals in one season of Ligue1 than actually scored. Now not to make fun of Choupo , he has actually became a very solid player, but he aint Lewandowski. He aint Mbappe, Leao, Haaland, Kane , Jesus, Lautaro , Immobile etc etc. And you see where this is going. You aint gonna be the worlds best team without a world class striker. And when they decide to play Mane with Muller upfront like they did against Leverkusen , they just not suited for that role. Its the same shit like with German national team. Great GKs , good defence, great Midfield , great Wingers but the striker role is Slovakia level . Also yes their performances in Bundesliga this year have been pretty poor for their standards, but to be fair in CL i thought only City is capable of beating them . They played great in CL . And given Citys record in CL , Bayern wouldnt be huge underdog. Maybe it aint the coach, maybe its the League and players. Maybe it doesnt seem that way but it can be tough to stay motivated through the season when you are levels above your rivals and 3 levels above the rest of the League. Just look at PSG. Same stuff. You can lack motivation when before the season starts, they are basicaly both already crowned champions lol.

I'm guessing Bayern's head coach is given similar sort of scrutiny to England's manager. I'm not sure whether that's the right comparison though. In England we don't exactly have one team who are seen as the jewel of the country's crown, the closest would be Man United. Our support is a lot more spread out and certainly very tribal. In Germany, it very much seems like if Bayern fail, German football fails, but I might be wrong. Anyhow, I'm fascinated by German football and German culture.

Neither can handle the egos, or the expectations of such a huge Club and if Bayern was too big for Nagelsmann, when they are in a quite healthy position, then he has absolutely no chance with Chelsea. He should go to Spurs. However he needs to be successful there as it can send your career progress back a few years as in seen by Jose and soon to be Conte who will more then likely go back to a struggling Juve team

There was no shred of Mia San Mia in the sacking of Nagelsmann. Kahn and Salihamidzic lack the patience, credibility and foresight to run a big club like Bayern Munich.

The only thing I hear in this chat between "pundits", is: I think, Maybe, I heard, etc. Never I spoke with x-y-z and they told me this and that. Please go back to real journalism and stop speculating and start reporting proper stories!!

Tbh i personally want Bayern to lose the tittle just because of the unjust sacking. Let the Bayern boards learn about some professionalism and humility.

The Athletic should at least mention the possibility of Müller’s role in all this, given that JN was shifting towards Musiala as a #10, which is Müller’s favourite position at both the club and the national team…

It's the shit show that football is now that teams like Bayern expect , demand to win the league every year until the end of time. That's not football , no competition at all isn't healthy . Clubs have to expect not win from time to time.

doesn't surprise me that Nagelsman's flamboyance ruffled the wrong feathers. The blazer he wore at Old Trafford a few years ago made him look as conceited as that self obsessed gonk Scott Parker
