How is it rules lawyering when thats what "sides" is meant to be used in chess. People use the terms sides to say each side of the board. Like "King's side" or "Queen's side". People dont say King's half or Queen's half. Which also includes "Your side of the board" and "The opponent's side of the board". If the challenge issuer had this intended in mind, next time just use the same words other people have used, like recently too there was a challenge where you need to give checks on the edge or side of the board or something like that. That makes it clear what the challenge is meant to be.

My wishful thinking is that he played the game with the aim of completing the challenge in the non-cowardly way and switched it up when writing the narration to make the prospect of Kb5 more suspenseful

the board has 4 sides, if you interpret it as sides of rectangle, but since the challenge seems to imply there are only 2 sides (with 'the other'), your interpretation is most likely correct

Moving the king over to queen side is also a valid interpretarion. Challenger is just one of those that doesnt know how to word things properly, and this time Simp made the most generous interpretation

Honestly I wonder whether simp decided on loosening the rule afterward the game so that it could be "enemy surrenders 1 more before success" instead of just enemy surrenders. But yeah it is a valid interpretation.

@@MurdogYT Well coloquially that's correct, but talking semantics you would have to say "the opposite side", as saying *"the* other side" instead of *"an* other side" is incorrect. It also doesn't help that we're talking about a chess board, which is filled in, and not just 4 lines.

With that interpretation of the challenge, you could have just divided the board along the vertical axis rather than horizontal and castled queen side to achieve the challenge!

Next time someone tries somethin like: if you play white, your king must get to the 8 rank; if you play as black, your king must get to the 1 rank. When, and only whhen, your king gets to the assigned destination, you check mate or gets him to resign.

A lot of people are insisting that the challenge meant the 8th rank or edge of the board, but it SAYS opponent's SIDE, and each side is four ranks. If the challenger wanted him to go all the way to the last rank, it would have said that. In fact, we just recently had a challenge that specified "edge" anyway.

Because nobody is on my side" -- Treebeard Also, if you did not interpret the challenge as "side" as in sides of the square (i.e. the king has to touch the opposite border, i.e. 8th rank when you started on 1st), but as "my side" and "opponent's side" (i.e. halves of the board) why not interpreting it as king-side and queen-side. That way you would have completed the challenge on move 4 at 1:09 (you'd still need to win the game though)

I've seen someone actually do this in a King's Gambit. Some grandmaster got chased all the way to a8 by black, but his king was completely safe. Edit: Never mind, white got checkmated. The video title is "How Does The White King Get Checkmated On a8???" by NiranjanNavalgund

Im seeing alot of people complaining about the interpretation of the rule he did here. Im pretty sure most of you that are thought the same when you first read the challenge. "sides" is exactly what you call the 2 "sides" of the board, your 'side' and the opponents, the first 4 ranks. If you wanted him to go from one "end" of the board to the other, the that would be how you shouldve issued the challenge. If that was what your challenge was, the challenge was already wrong then.

My immefiate interpretation was for the king to get to the opposite edge. Seems pretty clear to me on what was meant. Even linguistics aside, moving the king to the other "half" seems pretty trivial, so on that basis alone, we can deduce he meant "edge".

@@Tsunami14 when people talk about sides on the chessboard, no one who plays chess thinks the edge, thats why people use edge of the board, rim, any other words cause sides is to clarify, "the king's side", "the queen's side", the "sides" of the board. Its not about linguistics and whatever, its an actual term, a lot of previous challenges use the term edge or clarify that better than this guy if thats what they intended the challenge to be, but yeh.
