In this video, I will share with you why I took up a $140k loan to come from Singapore to the US to study an MBA. I will also discuss whether MBA is the right thing for YOU and what factors you need to consider? My name is Lin Chen, I am a class of 2021 MBA graduate from Cornell Johnson.

Hi, thanks for sharing! Wondering if you really have 140k USD student loan for pursuing MBA? How long will it take to pay off such amount? thanks!

Yes I do, school fees was USD 70k/yr so 140k in total. On average I think most can pay off in 3 years, of course depend on individual's situation if graduates went to IB or consulting even 2 years could be possible.

How did you make friends and establish deep relationships with cohort ? Was it tough ? Atleast, I see it as a challenge in tech program, mostly because I am not finding my kind of people

I think ppl of similar background tend to just drift tgt, like for me I was mostly hanging out with Asian cohorts n international students

@@AhBoyInUSA ok so I’m definitely a non traditional MBA, meaning I took very little Maths for my undergrad and I’m completely terrible at maths to be honest. I’ve been trying to understand, does quant really applies and essential during your MBA studies??

@@bayarea6766 that’s a tough question to answer. I think quant is more relevant to core courses u take initially like finance, accounting, data analytics, economics where’s its calculation heavy. Might be less impt to courses u take later on. But I think the bigger purpose is to make sure candidates are strong at using & making-decision with data, this is key to consulting, banking interviews, and relevant roles in tech

@@bayarea6766 The level of math needed during the MBA studies are VERY basic. You will have to do lot of analyses more as opposed to Math problems. If you can do well in the quant section of the GMATH, you will be fine in any MBA

Thanks Mei Hong! yea I think I didn't elaborate enough on that, but all in all geography is the more dominant reason from start to finish, given that I'm happy with my decision to study mba

Academics by itself is actually alright, I think spend on average 2hrs a day to study, weekend I normally do nothing. It becomes busy when recruiting, projects, club activities, academics piles up at the same time..

Can consider executive MBA which is for more mature candidates. I think regular MBA the most I seen is late 30s

What’s the main different for regular and executive MBA? Can I also ask when you look for job with your MBA is it your past work experience that helped you secure that job with Amazon? Possible for someone in different field to become a finance manager?

Past work experience definitely helped me, I was in finance function pre-MBA so that definitely strengthened my chances of landing finance job interviews. Different field is certainly possible, I have seen quite a few as well

The popular ones are Quorum and Prodigy, I recommend reaching out to ur school to see which they would recommend. Loan is worth it if the mba helps in accomplishing ur career goals, and most of times u can pay off in a couple of years
