One look at those cows and you can see you know what you're doing!! I also raised with cows, beef cows to the county fair every year from age 9-18. Wonderful years. So grateful. Hubby n I are on a track to get back to the family farm. I am so happy to see so many people establishing small holdings and homesteads! Very encouraging. I feel you and Wanda are precious resources for beginners and returners! God bless you and all.- Jeri

I've always loved cattle. Dexters are recommended for smallholders in the UK too. Jersey milk is the best milk - "Gold Top" as we used to call it. I would always have Jersey milk on cereals, wonderful. My mother said that in the Channel Islands, they would feed the cattle lots of tomatoes, as tomatoes were grown in abundance there. Lovely stall you have built there for the cattle. Thanks for sharing!

JudithB I had a Jersey milk cow for 5 yrs and she was definitely the center of the farm! She provided milk for drinking, butter, cheese and ice cream, and also bottle fed 2 calves! I fed extra milk to the hogs, chickens and turkeys. The manure fed the gardens and orchards. Her calves were sold or butchered depending on their sex. I had a Hereford bull and BlackBaldies for the rest of the herd. The Jersey ruled the pasture tho!! LOL She didnt like my son for some reason and would chase him sometimes so we had her horns tipped. I would love to have a Dexter/Jersey cross!

@@TammiP2182 When I first started out with goats, I got the beautiful Nubians. They were supposed to be PEOPLE FRIENDLY, meaning they had been acclimated to being around humans, touched and would not be skiddish, etc. The female doe was supposed to be PREGNANT, as well. I did not know the people I got them from but they seemed to be nice and honest. They delivered them when I was not home and my son was here to help get them into their new goat pen. I had the worst experience EVER with these goats as they were NOT people friendly, they did NOT adhere to commands and were the most destructive goats I had ever had. Also, the female doe was NOT PREGNANT but had given birth as she was full of milk. Every single day I was chasing goats to put them back in their pen as they took their horns and shredded the fencing of the pen. CONSTANT repairs on an almost daily basis. A bobcat got the female one early morning (I had been seeing it early mornings when I would be feeding up). A friend knowledable of animal health care (she ran a RESCUE/REHAB for animals) came and checked out Maggie and the bobcat claws had punctured the lining of the stomach area so every time she would breathe her intestines would come out the hole internally and she would bloat up really huge. Since I did not have the money to afford Vet intervention and surgery AND knowing infection had more than likely started internally the advice given was to put her down. It would have been an expensive surgery/aftercare with no guarantee she would even survive. We put her down and (excuse the blunt wording) skinned her out like a deer and processed her to eat. That had to have been the best meat I had ever eaten but then again, I am very tookie with the way I process ANY animal for consumption. I always bleed them out as much as possible when they are hanging for skinning then when the meat is put in a cooler of ice, I let the meat soak in the ice for 3-5 days leaving the drain plug open to empty the bloody water into a 5 gallon bucket as the ice melts. I keep ice on the meat at all times. I do the same with deer and any other wild game I process. I have always theorized the WILD GAMEY TASTE is in the blood so I drain it as much as I can before I actually process it. DO NOT LET THE MEAT SIT IN JUST ICE WATER as the meat will absorb the water and make it too WET when trying to process/grind etc. My meat has no gamey taste, not even my deer and no one knows the difference when they taste my (example) deer burger (85% meat-15% beef fat/trimmings ratio that gives you more of a ground chuck instead of the fatty ground beef-I am grease/fat sensitive). Anyway, I continued to have issues with the ESCAPE artists and their destructive behavior so I sold the Nubians to some people that raised Nubians and had a pasture full so they didn't mind if they weren't people friendly. I then tried the cute little Nigerian Pygmies. They were adorable, friendly and loved human contact. The female gave birth to twin girls and all was great until the Arctic Vortex of Jan 2014 hit and there was absolutely no green vegetation for them to forage in their fenced area. They began to escape and I was back to the dreaded chasing goats every morning and repairing fencing. The morning I went outside to feed up and found ALL 7 goats on my car as if it were a MOUNTAIN for them to climb, was the straw that broke the camels back with me. The billy was butting my car with his horns (which did cause damage) as well as their hooves scratching my car horribly. I sold these goats and said NEVER AGAIN would I have them here in the backwoods with constant predators and them escaping. I am a disabled Sr female so didn't have the means nor capability to fence in more acreage for them to forage so I had no alternative but to get rid of them. They were excellent mothers, produced enough milk for me as well as to make cheese (THE BEST EVER!!) but were not for me since I had limitations to installing more fencing, etc. I have had goat meat at many BBQ's that had been cooked in the ground, Grilled, Smoked and what I had processed and it was EXCELLENT, I just could not do the work every single day to keep them contained with all the coyotes, bobcats and other predators here in the backwoods. I would highly recommend them to younger, healthy people and KNOW WHO YOU ARE DEALING WITH when purchasing goats as I was scammed with the Nubians and some people just don't give a rip when they want to sell something. Sorry for the lengthy reply but wanted you & others to know of some of the issues I had with goats plus to let you know the meat is DELICIOUS!

J Jo dehorning at this stage and size of horn growth is really hard on the animal. Dehorning as a small calf is optimum although the best is actually to breed ‘polled’ cattle. [Polled is a natural mutation that means they are born without horns.]£

What is the A1/A2 gene...I know nothing about cows
@jkid9942

Some people who have a milk intolerance do better with cows that are A2/A2. Now that genetic testing is easier and less expensive, more farmers are able to test for it.

Typically miniature cows are bred by taking the runts if you will of a cow breed and breeding them with other small sized bulls, breeders will keep breeding down the size till they get cows/bulls that meet the size requirements necessary to call it a mini cow. You do have to take care to breed a cow to a bull that is a bit smaller than the cow to make it easier for the cow to calf. Milking can become an issue with some mini jersey cows because their "udders" can hang so low as to drag along the ground which make milking/feeding calves near impossible and causing Mastitis. The good thing is that low hanging udders is typically genetic so with careful breeding practices this can be avoided to some degree This condition is also due to the median suspensory ligament becoming weaker . There is one true miniature cow called a miniature Zebu that is adorable. I've been studying up on the subject of raising mini cattle for a few years in preparation for my own farm. Hope this helps

They are an old breed from Ireland that was almost lost. They date back to the early 1800s.

I am not sure they are miniature. They are the natural size for their breed. According to proper breed identification, a miniature is an animal that is a dwarf by genetic defect. Dexters are exactly what they are supposed to be. They too can have dwarfism, but a good 750lb finished Dexter steer is not mini, it’s what it was intended to be.
