He's a teenager who was hit with so much responsibility at a young age and feels compel to use it to help people. He puts others first before himself even though it's terrible. He has no time for his friends or possible love life. He struggles making ends meet. He has to take care of his aunt since he's the man of the house. These are all points we have all gone through

I had many, many back and forth conversations with Netflix about doing an activation for One Piece. Their words: "We want to appeal to a new audience more than the existing one because the existing audience will watch no matter what." And, honestly, it makes sense. Yes, make it true to One Piece and appeal to fans, but this entire thing is about bringing in a broader audience - primarily US.
@emperorluffy6001
@emperorluffy6001 11 ай бұрын
They're idiots if they actually believe that. Theres no making One Piece appealing to a different audience. Because One Piece is appealing as it is. Thats why it's as big as it is in the first place. They're trying to fix something that isn't broken.
@kylesmith987
@kylesmith987 11 ай бұрын
That exact reason is why you get terrible adaptations. By trying to change things randomly because you think it will bring in a broader audience you a lot of the time remove what made that franchise good in the first place. In doing this you don't bring in a new audience because its bad and you end up alienating the existing audience because well its bad. A lot of the time just changing the medium can bring in a new audience because there are people out there that will watch a movie or TV show that will never sit down and read Manga, Comic, or book, etc. Also to be clear I'm not saying adaptation doesn't need to happen. I genuinely think if they tried to do a perfect 1 to 1 live action of one piece it would be terrible because it doesn't translate well to live action. But you need to try to stay as faithful to the source material as possible while adapting it to the medium you are going for. If you figure out a way to do this well you will gain a new audience just through the new medium while also pleasing the core audience that made that source material so popular in the first place.
@CHEFPKR
@CHEFPKR 11 ай бұрын

@JLHoskins
@JLHoskins 11 ай бұрын
Adding onto their slow burn take, I think another reason for why slow movies are rarer is because of how random the success is. Like for instance, Dune and Bladerunner 2049 were both made by the same director. They're both excellent films, but for some reason 2049 was a financial failure, whereas Dune succeeded. And as much video essay analysts try to pinpoint why this is, I don't think anyone *really* knows why this happened. It's like how Vinland Saga's farming arc birthed a meme; Some people thought the slow second season would fail, some thought it would succeed- I don't think anyone expected that it would birth a philosophical meme. Yet here we are.

Hey Garnt, since you are not afraid to get into books for new media, I recommend the Mistborn series from Brandon Sanderson. It is a fantasy book that begins on the premise that, what if the dark lord won? The first book starts as a heist to try to destabilize the empire and is a self conclusive book in case you do not like it, however if you do, there are two more books and then another four in a future era within the same world and there are more stories connected in the galaxy should you like to read more from Sanderson.

We've had so many Live Action Anime discussions but I've never heard them talk about the Rurouni Kenshin Live Action films. Arguably one of the best live action adaptations that exist, and there's four of them. Also the "uncanny valley" feeling Garnt is talking about is probably the AOT live-action filter that's blatantly obvious on that fish shot, the darkish, smokey shade.

Also the DND movie works cause luck is a huge factor in the entire film which is what they used to reflect the dice rolls. Luck has always been the hidden factor in everything they do from the very start of the film with the guy being late and all, to the wizard having his foot stuck, even the decisions they make are sometimes "out of the box" but still works which is something you usually do in a real DND game.

1:53:02 so true. I think about the popularity of certain things and how they came to be. Majority of the time they just get so big it’s sort of a collection of consciousness between everyone. But with the flow of entertainment sped up and the life spans of those things have 3-6 days of longevity, it’s almost impossible to connect and find that common ground. I do think it’s cool that there’s so many unique people and they have their own things but the relatability and finding that tribe or people is at an all time high.

The biggest factor for early KZfaq's low mobile use was more to do with the cost of mobile data and the low coverage of wifi. Most houses didn't get wifi until probably 08-10. I didn't even have a phone that could play videos until 2010, but I started gaming on my PC in 2004, and because of the internet/PC/cable situation, instead of a second monitor, I literally had a small 14in TV next to my monitor

Speaking about youtubers’ maturity, I commend Garnt for being an awesome role model without him even noticing it. Over the last decade that I’ve been perusing this platform, there are far too few creators whose content I’ve loved so much for being an inspiration for creativity and passion. His writing and speaking is impeccable. To this day, I still go back and rewatch his video essays on different anime, a few special mentions are the ones he did for the end of Eva, and Your Name. His words and delivery speak volumes of the love and passion he has of the medium. Even his other content that are meme-y and unserious, I find most of them touching and inspirational in a way other creators can’t. Yes we see them act like fools with their trash takes in the podcast and after dark, but man, his personality and talent when delivering his essays have only gone up over the years. He has the eloquence of a poet who likes talking about anime titties who can make you cry from laughing too much or ugly cry from the way he talks about anime. I only have respect and admiration for THE Anime Zone.

For the DnD movie if you listen carefully to how the characters speak, you can differentiate player characters from NPCs based on their speech pattern. Some of the events in the movie doesn't seem to make sense, but for DnD players you would get it, e.g. the labyrinth fight where the DM forced the scenario to happen cause he had already setup the battle board; the self insert paladin character that used to be from the DM's pervious campaign he played in; the overpowered staff the DM had to insert cause the players destroyed the only way across the lava chasm; every main character must resolve their back story arc, etc. The movie would have done well if not for the OGL debacle, and sandwiching it between John Wick and Mario didn't help it either.

Honestly I like that we all watch different things because now we all have different stuff we can talk about. we can also recommend shows to each other and contrast what we've seen. Connor joining the neighborhood watch groups is so relatable. There's one in the area I live, too. It's bored people looking for some excitement and to stir up some drama. Everyone is a Facebook detective and they see everything as suspicious. I'm paranoid when I'm out in public that if i look at someone the wrong way I'll end up in a Facebook post. 1:36:47 This commentary from Connor remind me of the tragedy of King Arthur and the Legend of the Sword. That movie was really good and was peak fantasy/magic world, with a lot to expand and explore how to take old Arthurian stories and put it in a new light. Packed with a good story, action, characters and interactions, with a killer soundtrack to wrap it up. Unfortunetaly, it failed in the box office and I can´t accept that I live in a world without those 6 other planned movies in that new universe.

Agreed. While the movie had flaws (A LOT of flaws), it also had some pretty entertaining and interesting concepts (for example: the whole tower thing may seem pretty generic, but it could also be a reference to something happened in the original story, where Merlin and Vortigern saw the Dragons under it). And while the other movies probably wouldn't have been better, it would've been pretty cool to see a shared a universe about the Knights of the Round Table, like one about Lancelot, one about Gawain and his Brothers, etc....

Commenting on the Lord of the Coast in the OP Live Action. It looks plainly scary in the live action like any sea monster you'd imagine in your nightmares, but it doesn't really look the same kind of scary in the anime or the manga. Sea Kings usually have a more comical cartoonish face and the fear they're meant to instill is just on their massive size and some of them also have big smiles and crazy eyes like that monster from Madoka Magica. The Lord of the Coast in the manga looks like a grumpy old sailor

Just answering the title here, I think live action producers/ directors 90% of the time are in for a cash grab, but this time with one piece and having Oda actually being involved in it, I genuinely have high hopes, the actors and production crew seem very passionate about it and I doubt they’ve created huge sets using large budgets, just for commercial success. There genuinely seems to be a lot of care and homage paid to the original series to produce a show that fans can truly enjoy and make one piece’s story even more popular to casuals, and I for one am gassed.

Between Spiderman and Batman, I like Batman more not because of relativity but because of the stories and what Connor and Joey has said (the set, characters, and lore to name a few), being more interesting to me. I like the cartoons, games and the comics (some of the alternate universe stories are amazing). I enjoy the movies ngl, especially the animated ones. The only Endgame I love is the Batman: Endgame by Scott Snyder (not Zack Snyder), tbh I love his batman run, probably one of my favorites. As a dc fan, I'm so confused why they can't adapt the stories the way the animated ones does. Tbh, hearing their discussion really shows me how influential movies are in creating the public perception towards dc and marvel cause ngl some of the characters do not act like that in the comics at first but the moment it blows up, the character's personality is altered to match what the casual fans liked. Harley Quinn is one of those characters, where istg she became like a female version of deadpool with how much the character does a 4th wall break in the comics when it was not part of her character at all. As a dc fan, I've seen the divide in the Harley Quinn fans. The whole batfam being unkown to the casual fans or the fact that there are multiple flash and Green Lantern. These comic characters has decades of stories so I get why people won't know all but why can't the live action movies atleast show the core aspect of these stories/characters like Superman being hopeful (the lighthearted boy scout who grew up in kansas who does good things and has humanity) or Batman being more detective and serious (can I just say that Batman does have humor, it's just usually very dry and are mostly a witty one line joke/comment.)
