Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 815 goals, won five Champions Leagues, and five Ballon d'Ors - yet seemingly no one wants to sign him.
Despite asking to leave Manchester United this summer to get Champions League football, there are - currently - no UEFA Champions League teams who have attempted to sign him.
It's rather an unusual set of circumstances, so in this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at Ronaldo's transfer saga, why no one wants to sign him, and what it says about how football has changed over the last 10-15 years.

He's been a top five player ever during his career but 500k per week should get you prime Ronaldo not what he is now. It's not worth destroying your wage structure, potentially causing issues in the dressing room and just having a guy who goes about his business like he's bigger than the manager and the club for the sake of a player who only scores goals and is only likely to get about 15-20 of them for you per season with that number likely to decline every season he plays.

A surprising number of managers also have either an obvious or a hidden 'no dickheads' policy. Teams are now balanced finely. Even Man City is not going to radically change how they play (and win) because Haaland has arrived on their doorstep. To do it for Ronaldo? Not bloody likely.
@gadget00
@gadget00 Жыл бұрын
That's a mistake of City actually; they HAVE to change their style for Haaland to succeed; no more false 9 or he will be a waste of a signing. I hope Guardiola fixes this. But I agree, managers do not have the need to deal with demanding players; at least those that are on the top teams certainly won't right now. ETH sit Ronaldo in the first game; Pochettino never doubted taking Messi out of the field whenever he felt like. That's a sign of the times

@@flarish6935 Haaland is a true 9, he won't defend, he won't be giving out passes, that's not his game; his game is receive a pass and run with the ball and shoot or shake off the defenders and make the finish touch or header. Bringing him in and expect him to just move out of the way every time Fodden or KDB want to run to the box and shoot is a travesty. Last season we HAD to play like because we didn't had a functioning 9 eventhough Gabriel Jesus was there but couldn't do it properly. Now we spent over 85M quid to have one, the whole team has to adapt. No more false 9, no more CAMs going all the way to the box, they have to feed Haaland somehow. In fact, this is not new at all; that's how they played with Aguero, they fed him and he scored, over and over again. That's how I see it

Although the idea of Marseille sounds interesting, in my opinion, if Ronaldo accepts a big pay cut, then the best option he has is Sporting Lisbon. For all of these reasons: 1. They finished second last season, meaning they will play Champions League football. 2. Liga NOS is less physically demanding, meaning Ronaldo can score even more goals. 3. They're always title contenders. 4. They're still a financially stable club, could pay him a decent salary. 5. They are his boyhood club, where it all started. He could return the favor by winning some titles for them. Although it's outside the top 5 leagues, the Portuguese league is still one of the best in the world and a lot of people would be tunning in just to watch Ronaldo play. It might seem like a step back, but for 37 years old it's still way more impressive.

Doubt it because once he goes to a smaller club there is no going back to a top club, he'll be seen as finished and a risky option because he'll be a 38 year old playing outside the top 5 leagues. Btw Sporting are not a financially stable club, they are getting there but they're not.

Sporting should be his last club no doubt but he's not going to as we know But if you follow Sporting close you'll see although they won their first league title in more than 10 years it doesn't mean they'll win it again. In fact Ruben's Amorin's tactic cracks are starting to show up and speaking of tactic, I bet 100 pounds that if Ronaldo was to go to Sporting he would be benched for most games. Under Amorin they play on a 3-4-3 which constant pressing is a must and Ronaldo ain't fit for that. Sporting will always be title contenders but, Benfica and Porto will most likely take sporting's chances of wining anything, Porto is strong as always, Benfica with their new manager they are starting to get their ground again, I can't see how Sporting can compete against them Sporting ain't financialy stable yet ... i agree with alfie, that while his age and salary are the obvious stumbling blocks, it's also his playstyle that doesn't suit most modern teams' pressing tactical approach. i guess you could say he is a luxury player at this point both financially and tactically. oddly very similar to mesut ozil, you're gonna need the other 9 outfield players to do a lot of the donkey work of running around, pressing and feed the ball to ronaldo to score goals. But if you're doing this, it won't last long cos he's already going to be 38 this mid seasion.

What I will say is that he doesn't work either in an organized high press nor a counterattacking structure. What I said is that the point of high press is so that the ball doesn't get down there to Luke Shaw. I never said that was his personal responsibility. And no it's not Rashford's either. You press as a team to limit passing options it's everybody's responsibility and he cannot be a part of that. Fundamentally he wasn't worth it and that's not his fault. It's United's stupid board's fault for signing him in the first place. And no I don't think his goals made up for it given the team played worse to accommodate him, conceded more goals and scored fewer. In what world can you call that improving the team and not being a luxury player. United simply doesn't have the squad to accommodate him. They don't want him possibly due to the following reasons: 1. His age, and his inability to now adapt to how a team wants to play particularly when it comes to the press. 2. Possibly regarded as a one-man show and wanting it all as how he wants, to the detriment of teams. 3. Too stroppy and too much of an ego. 4. Deemed as chasing individual plaudits at this stage, rather than advancing a squad. 5. Can distort the balance of a squad in the long-term, why he is focused on the short-term. 6. Too expensive. 7. @rohanmondkar9467
@rohanmondkar9467 Жыл бұрын
I disagree. The only time United looked lethal in attacking sense was when Ronaldo was on the pitch. The problem was that half of the time that happened because of moments of individual brilliance from CR7 rather than a proper team link up play. The fact that United barely scored any goals in the games Ronaldo did not play in is a testament to this. The real issue is that all of the other attackers completely fell out of form and missed easy opportunities on target multiple times including Rashford, Bruno, Martial, Cavani and Sancho. They were all inconsistent and just didn’t seem hungry to win throughout the year. Greenwood who looked like in a good form early on in the season didn’t play after the first few games because of his personal legal ongoings. Midfield didn’t help with service to the strikers either. The amount of mistakes and possession losses that McTomminay and Fred made last season was depressing. All in all, the team needs to really start stepping up their attacking performances and become hungry for goals. And Macguire and Co not messing up in the back completely destroying every lead is the biggest factor that needs to be addressed by Ten Hag.
@djalland1
@djalland1 Жыл бұрын
I think your last point is the main issue. To accommodate him as a starting player requires a team to be built around him because of everything you have mentioned (especially work rate off the ball), and at 37 that simply isn't going to happen, not even for him. As an impact sub, however, he could be devastating because there's nobody else with his ability to change a game when needed, especially in the latter stages with a tiring opposition. There's no way he'd go for that, though. And that is a huge issue for United as, despite results suggesting otherwise, they have a squad of incredibly talented players who Ten Hag could mould into something very good indeed. That said, as a Liverpool fan, I'd be quite happy for this to carry on for a long time to come.

United doesn't have a team of "incredibly talented" players. There are a few talented players, like Bruno and Sancho, but most of their players have absolutely no place in a team of United's pedigree. Kane is basically a harder-working Ronaldo, he could act like more of a poacher like back in Poch's days or dropping deam to give Son and Kulusevski room to attack. Ronaldo's big ego may be a hindrance as well. With Kane, you have a mostly agreeable and humble guy, but Ronaldo is very selfish, even by a star's standard. I think even 5 years ago he still has takers even at his age. He never built up the versatility and off the ball defensive skill the biggest clubs demand now, because genuinely he didn't need to, and he's just worth too much money to bring in anymore. At the beginning of his career all you cared your striker could do was score goals, and he could do even more than that. He was brilliant carrying the ball on the wing and had the pace to burn you if you didn't give him space as well as the ball control to trick you if you gave it to him. In 2005, the best strikers in the world only needed to do 2 of those things, he was a complete package. Then at Madrid he became one of the most lethal finishers in history. Even in 2015 you would have seen Champions League teams bite to bring him in to see if they could add a poacher in the same way that Juventus did. Before COVID or even last year I think you could have seen PSG bite to grab him or any number of big teams before gegenpress and variations on positional play became so dominant over the end of the previous decade. He's in the unfortunate position so many top shot stopping keepers, unsavy pressing attackers, and #10 assist machines are in; their position is in the process of a slow and painful rebirth that leaves teams at a crossroads with them. If a player is young you might be able to convince them to pick up those skills (see Rashford and Sancho) so their worth keeping around a few years, but if they're aging and unlikely to be able to add a hard skill such as those to their game, they'll get dumped (highest profile lately has been Ozil). I do hope he embraces a bench role as a super sub over the next couple years because he genuinely has so much more to give to the game, but I sadly don't expect he will.

I have said since day one that Man U getting him back was a real step backwards. Any growth the team were pushing towards under Ole was wrecked once Ronaldo came back as he was always going to have to be first pick due to who he is/wages. Any risk they would have taken playing younger players went out the window and now they are many months down the line with no progress. The lack of faith in younger squad members, plus the disruption he appears to be causing within the squad has really back fired

Yup meanwhile people like shaw, mctominay, Fred, rashford, maguire start whilst dropping stinkers but ronaldo should be the main focus? The truth is the reason all those above players looked good was a) Ole only knew counter attacking football which suits players like rashford and maguire who works better in a low block. Once utd faced someone parking the bus they’d immediately struggle under Ole and he was tactically inept b) Liverpool, chelsea, city, arsenal and Tottenham dropped so many unexpected points in that lockdown season and some were hit by injuries like van dijk c) Ronaldo may have piss poor work rate but he at least has goal return. What does rashford/maguire/Fred/mctominay offer? Rashford being younger can’t press and has poor finishing and decision making. Maguire can’t play a high line. Mctominay…let’s just not get into that one!

@@iwantthemoonback4198 help develop rashford? You mean Marcus Rashford a player with 5+ seasons under his belt and who still can’t showcase any football IQ? You can’t help develop a guy who’s head is more into his own PR rather than his career. Rashford is a clear case of rewarding mediocrity. At 23, ronaldo was a PL, CL, ballon d’or, fa cup, league cup, club wc winner and rashford has not even achieved half of this and is rewarded with 250k pw? And by mediocrity I mean the fact that they have not achieved any collective success/major trophies. Bruno being another case at this point- started well but then goes missing in big games, loves to just hero ball and is rewarded with a bumper contract; now he seems like he cba to put in a shift… I mean how is it Ronaldo’s fault that the media attention is on him? If anything that actually benefits players like shaw, mctominay, maguire, rashford, sancho (another letdown so far) who are getting away with murder on the pitch and are going unscathed. Ronaldo’s scored 20+ goals last season with mcfred behind him. Now imagine if he had kdb or even modric? Don’t get me wrong I don’t think utd should’ve bought ronaldo at this stage because it’s not sustainable to build around him at 37 but the amount blame he gets is ridiculous when there are way bigger problems at the club.

My picks: Portugal 🇵🇹 are on the right track towards winning a World Cup. I believe all it takes is the right team led by the right coach and they will win one eventually. Their structure has proven to constantly produce some of the best players in history and shows no signs of decline. Netherlands 🇳🇱 used to be closest to winning one, but something was lost in the last few years. They are currently lacking some talent but I have no doubt that their overall football structure works and they will generate new world-class players eventually. When this time comes, the right marriage of squad and coach should put them in a competitive spot once again. Belgium 🇧🇪 needs to prove their golden generation was not accidental and that a steady supply of world-class footballers can be maintained. Denmark 🇩🇰 already proved several times they can be very strong through teamwork. Good defense, good camaraderie, good mentality. However, I feel like they have lacked the type of players Portugal, the Netherlands or even Belgium are able to field. They would need a Dane competing for a Ballon D'Or or being regarded the best in his position. I always wondered what would happen if a player the likes of Lewandowski, Haaland, or De Bruyne appeared in Denmark. If a future generation comes with 2 or 3 of these type of world class players and can still maintain that amazing mentality and teamwork I talked about... then they can most definitively win one in this century! Colombia 🇨🇴 has been able to produce some really good players but watching them it's clear that sometimes that's not enough to make a good team. Their football structure (as a country) works, and it should be able continue to produce talent, but they need to believe they can win. I think the mentality is there but requires a coach and a few leaders on the pitch that can really bring it out and inspire them. I also think it would help to decide on a style of play. Nigeria 🇳🇬 I am honestly surprised they have not yet been able to replicate their success in youth world cups. I feel like Nigerians are not getting to enjoy the full extent of their talent pool, but I don't know enough about their football structure to point my finger at exactly what is broken or what is stopping them from producing better players. México 🇲🇽 a giant in its confederation but they have struggled outside of Concacaf. Like with Nigeria, I feel like Mexicans don't get to enjoy the full extent of their talent pool, but in this case I know the reasons. Corruption within youth academies, a large foreign player pool blocking the way for new talents within their own league, poor relations with European agents, ridiculous overpricing of young talents, and terrible marketing for their suprisingly strong league have all contributed to a sort of stagnation of Mexico's footballing structure. However, they won 2 U-17 world cups and reached 2 other finals, as well as reaching the final of the U-20 world cup and winning the Olympic Gold Medal at a U-23 level. All the good signs are there, but their structure would need to change and adapt to an export-first model like some South American nations. United States 🇺🇸 call me crazy but I think this is the fastest-developing football structure in the world. They've been slowly but successfully been building a fanbase inside their country, which is resulting in more attention (and therefore money) being put into the sport. American owners have already invested all over Europe and American youth academies have also begun producing some interesting players. I think the current generation of Pulisic, McKennie, Weah, Adams, etc is good but they're only the start. The future looks bright if they keep up this good work! South Korea 🇰🇷 I think South Korea currently has the strongest football development project in Asia with their new National Academy. Their leadership is clearly aiming to create the new Son Heung-Min. The K-League is a bit underrated too, and as for the National Academy project, the only thing that could stand in the way of a steady supply of exciting new player prospects is Korea's ultra-competitive schooling environment which can be toxic sometimes and leads to parents discouraging young kids from becoming athletes. To this, I would add that there's other countries I believe will continue to grow and become more relevant in the not so distant future such as Japan 🇯🇵, Ghana 🇬🇭. Egypt 🇪🇬, Turkey 🇹🇷, Serbia 🇷🇸. Croatia 🇭🇷, Morocco 🇲🇦, Algeria 🇩🇿, Chile 🇨🇱, and Sweden 🇸🇪

I’m embarrassed to say that during Ronaldo’s last season at Real when Benzema scored only 5 league goals, I often questioned why he was still at the club. And now after Benz’s Ballon Dor level season, it’s crazy to think in hindsight how much he had to sacrifice while Ronaldo was at Real. I’m also a huge basketball fan and the same exact predicament occurred with great players as they aged like Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson. The best solution for Ronaldo is to concede his ego and come off the bench. I hate to not see him play champions league football and I hope you can actually go to a side that is playing in the UCL, but regardless I think for his career and whatever team he’s playing for he should accept the super sub role.

I know they are experienced journalists with very intricate web of sources both within the clubs and associated with agents but I could’ve sworn it wasn’t like you’d tune in to a single reporter’s social media and instantly become aware of all legitimate and factual news regarding all clubs’ transfer situations… or maybe I’m wrong and I just never paid attention lol I just thought clubs would do anything possible to keep transfers on the hush (especially for in-demand players or good bargains) to prevent hijackings and $hite storms and stop the news going around by any means necessary.

That Brighton and Brentford shade was vicious! I'd argue that one of the reasons teams don't want him is he's arrogant. He wants to pick who he plays for and where, but those teams don't need him, and he won't 'lower himself' to go back to Sporting in Portugal because they aren't a team in a Big 5 league. Yet they are playing in the Champions League, which is what he wants. Ronaldo could be an immortal by going back to Sporting and leading them on a Champions League run, but his pride won't let him do it.

Nice to have my suspicions confirmed with stats. The recent correlation of Ronaldo goes to a club and the club gets worse, but he avoids blame from a lot of people as he gets his own personal stats high at expense of his team. If Man City can win the title of Gundogan as top goal scorer, it shows the importance of a prolific goal scorer isn't what it used to be.

Regardless of the money, influence, and competitive aura: Cristiano Ronaldo CANNOT offer any beneficial output for any of the top European clubs beside goals. It is statistically evident that he hindered Manchester United’s overall attack and player development, as pointed out by Alfie. The only argument he had fizzled out this season, as he failed to reach anywhere close to the numbers of players like Salah and Son, and in Europe overall. This argument being elite output of goals, that no other player but Messi and Lewandowski could match or best. We’ve seen the massive decline in his game, mostly due to his age and his dwindling technique. It is no longer appropriate to say that Cristiano Ronaldo starts for any team on the planet.

Great video. Unbiased, comprehensive and analytics. 10 years ago, yes sure, you can build a team to play around him. Now, he is still a great player but no top elite teams would make tactical sacrifice (overhaul their style) to fit in a 37 year old poacher who always wants to be a starting XI. His ego is his biggest stumbling block. He can no longer give what's needed outside the goals he provide, modern day football asks for more than that. In short, he is not worth the risk.

Football is always evolving. A prime Pele (rest his soul) might have struggled as a footballer in the modern era of the game with offsides, superior defending and goal keeping. Nowadays club don't exactly want a striker, more like a complete football player - someone who can tackle, defend, and score goals. Ronaldo has been frozen in his role as forward. Plus, his skill as a forward is also within the D box. With age, he cannot pull a ball from the back line all the way to opposition goal. This seems to be a difference in footballing era and Ronaldo should not feel ashamed of what he contributed to it

As a Manchester United fan. The dream became the nightmare, he is a solid player still, no denying that. But his mentality to win and win everything can often be seen as petulant or more than likely arrogant. Manchester United have often been the home of world class talent. And unfortunately right now we don't have that. We won't get that unless things drastically change. I don't get why we've brought in a manager if they're going to be playing the same old shit.... We've bought defenders so why is luke Shaw starting. We have a 4 time champions league winner in varane starting on the bench oppose to Harry maguire. It's embarrassing. I never thought I'd see the day where I found arteta.. A manager of arsenal being more brave and bold than the Manchester United boss. He saw whilst aubamayang was one of their best players he was a bit of a locker room cancer, that didn't fit the new system and got rid. Something has to change. I just don't know when and how.

I don’t think Ronaldo is delusional enough to think they would win the Prem in his first season of return considering the current state of the team and the competition. He said so himself in his interview when he came back. He knew it was going to be an uphill battle. However, he is the only one with the correct mentality in the team unlike half the youngsters who are more interested in PR and their player value than winning. That included Ole and most of the locker room that just didn’t have the hunger to win. But he definitely wouldn’t have expected to be at number 6. I don’t blame him to expect being the top 4 and playing UCL when he joined. His frustration stems from the fact that the team is regressing rather than improving while no necessary transfers are being made to address the weakness in the midfield and defence.

Ronaldo will always get goals, but usually at a detriment to the team. As others have said, his inability (or even refusal) to press does not play well with modern tactics and managerial demands. There were even reports (albeit unconfirmed) that he demanded Ten Hag not attempt to play in that way. While the current Utd side has been shambolic at times, in preseason when Ronaldo wasn't there, they looked more of a team unit. Much like the season before he came back and the goals were spread around the whole team. That happened at Juventus too. Ronaldo scored plenty, but the rest of the team's numbers dropped off a cliff. Ronaldo expects everything to go through/to him. And he has shown a tendency to get pissy if it doesn't. I lost a huge amount of respect for him when he was at Real and there was footage of him effectively throwing a tantrum because a teammate had the temerity to score themselves instead of passing it to him for a 2 yard tap in. Because even then, his team scoring was less important than him boosting his own stats. That should never be acceptable, however good a player you may be. And his behaviour on the pitch when things aren't going well is a disgrace. Throwing hissy fits like a snotty brat if he is subbed off. Storming down the tunnel like a stroppy teenager if he doesn't like the result. Too many people give him a free pass by saying it his 'will to win.' Even if that is the case, I wouldn't allow that kind of behaviour from an U10 team, let alone a professional (and supposedly adult) player. His refusal to acknowledge the Utd fans after they sat through that horror show at Brentford is case in point. His ego has been a problem for years. And now he is having to face the reality that many teams, especially CL contenders, see him as more hassle and expense than he's worth.

Imma answer this very quickly, he is an aging legend whose salary is tremendously high and while his individual stats are a claim of how great he is, the team stats tend to worsen upon arrival because he acts as a disruptor of playstyle and managerial decisions. I am not saying Cristiano actively tells managers and players to play like that, but it is the only real way to play with Cristiano since he is not a big team player and is showing that even more as he ages. This is not a bad thing, this is what is expected due to the natural capabilities of the player, just like Messi is acting primarily as a playmaker more and more as time goes by, Cristiano acts as a finisher more and more, which is something teams just cant afford to play right now when there are strikers that are more team players than him. So yeah, he is a lability signing, I am not saying he is bad, cause he is not, but no S tier or probably even A tier team needs him and affording him would be a waste of money. Think about it this way, you are Bayern, you could buy Ronaldo but completely change playstyle just for one player and on top pay a tremendous amount of money over the course of what? 2 to 3 years max? You have the option to instead go for Patrick Shick, Vlahovic, Kane, Haaland, Julian Alvarez, Nuñez, you know rising talent that costs way less and might do the same job. This is nothing against Cristiano, but people must understand that just like Messi, he is getting older and riskier to sign

Lol. Don’t worry. You can stop dreaming. It was never going to happen even if SCP payed his full wages. I’m sure he can’t wait to test himself against Rio Ave.. But: If he took a massive pay cut - Sporting Lisbon would 100% sign him. Just for the CL experience and goals he will hunger for in a competition they are not exactly prolific in the past, now or ever will be. Big champions league clubs can afford to reject his services at even a cut price as they will be in contention for final spots regardless. And so if he will help you in CL, are you worried he will make you lose your shape against ‘Gil Vicente or Pacos’? And your 13th in the league with 4 points from 12.. in Liga Portugal. Compare the teams in that league apart from the big three to CL teams. You can’t. And you would say no to Cristiano Ronaldo? Just the exposure itself would hype the fans and media elevating the interest in Sporting Cp. no disrespect but you can’t afford to be as picky to have world class memories as the other teams he’s been linked with. And anyway, He was never a true Sporting Player like Figo. So there won’t be all the added emotion and hysteria that surrounded his United return. He didn’t particularly like being at Lisbon. He did what he needed to do to get noticed and to get out of there quick. He even rejected staying one year on loan before moving to Manchester the first time. Im not having a go, as a Benfica fan, I can relate as we have countless players do the same to us. We are a feeder league mostly. Benfica would be stupid not to take him ‘on a massive pay cut’ if we could have offered CL football. Because our job is to bring in raw talent, then flog it for astronomical prices while they are still young. Or just wait until they run their low wage contracts out after using us as a stage and going on a free but 2 years later anyway. He may make one or two strikers have to wait a couple seasons before breaking through, but the rest of the squads value goes up immediately just by association; so instant price hikes on the outstanding ones as well as the chance for the ones who wait to learn from the Goat. Oh and he is the National Teams Captain…and only Captain of a Portugal team to ever win a Major Trophy , who would be playing in Portugal for the current Portuguese champions who most definitely will not be close to being champions again this year.- But Sporting would say no? Doubt it. Especially if the situation came to be ; Sporting are the only club that is able to offer him First team football and keep him happy just before he goes into probably his final World Cup and possible international tournament ever. The one Portugal now covets the most to win. And who better to win it with. If you guys didn’t take him and he is not in shape for that: don’t bother going down to the Alvalade this weekend. It would have been been burned down by literally every single non SCP fan in Portugal. But the truth is: he would consider Saudi Arabia ahead of Sporting. For what? A massive pay cut, A few group games in CL then get kicked out then back to Liga Portugal focusing on “Away to Santa Clara”? I think he would prefer to watch Mcguire play in his position while he watched from bench taking his 375k than have the shame of playing in a league literally no one apart 5 million Portuguese football fans and talent scouts care about. Compare that to the Billions that watch premier league and La Liga..

PSG is Mbappe (and Neymar for the moment) team, Messi is supporting cast winning his boatloads of money walking in the background without much fuss. Ronaldo has to accept those terms; he won't be the 'center' of any top team in Europe anymore; he's not even the main player in ManUnited right now; ETH made the impardonable sin of benching him in the first game, only to throw him to the pitch out of desperation. But he was willing to start without him; that's a sign of the times. It's a sour thing for him, but it's the truth. No team and no trainer will 'build' a team around him anymore; he has to cut his salary and his pretentions. So why not become a Geordie legend who potentially helps them into the top 4 within the next 2 seasons as a result!
