We must all try to empathize before we criticize. Ask someone what's wrong before telling them they're wrong.

How much time to be patient and empathetic? 1 week? 1 month? 1 year? 3 years? There's gotta be a time to move on so that the energy that goes to dealing with toxicity can be used to focus on other areas of growth!

More useful to be patient and empathetic in nourishing one’s talent, if org cannot appreciate your contribution, better to move on, selfish cultures and people are waste of time.

He's not saying to only ever be patient and empathetic, but to start from a place of patience and empathy. These should be your core tools for interpersonal relationships. But if a tool isn't working with a person, you find the one that will.

He's true. It's so easy to pin cushion people into boxes. Rather than go through the hard work, patience, training -- we are quick to judge & write off people. I struggle with it in hiring all the time. Our judgement is based off of our history & experiences. It is immensely valuable. If your gut is telling you something about someone. Or, you're quick to notice certain behaviors / things going on -- you are probably spot on. However, there could be other reasons we aren't thinking about. Did we do our side of the struggle to engage that person, or group. Did we do our very best to see them succeed? Or, was it just easier to write them off...?

I interpret you saying that the problem is not you, its the other person, so they need to change. Do you feel so confident in how you interact with your boss and other people that you have no room for growth? "Change" can be as simple as acknowledging that what you're doing today (with your boss in this case) isn't working and you both have to find a way to work together, communicate better. I've learned that no matter what role or stakeholder group I am with, I represent the change I want to see while also being open to a part of others changes. None of us are perfect or are beyond growth, you and your boss. I had a stakeholder in a remote office that was constantly causing me frustration, directly and indirectly affecting my projects and teams. Recognizing the issue, I started meeting 15 minutes a week with her to talk about ongoing work and to have private 1on1 feedback. It took about two months to get to a point we could start having friendly conversations about non-work which has now led to a great relationship where my feedback no longer received negatively, but a counter-balance, and vice versa.

Leadership is not about what they do, its about what you do. It is not a job title. It is a way of being. It isn't dictated by pay, but by those you influence around you.

I always ask when a person wants to speak negative about a team member, to tell me three positive things about that person. It’s takes them off guard. Two things I always say… 1. It’s not my story to tell. 2. I refuse to tear down, I’m a builder upper ! 👍🏽👍🏽

Hi Simon, i like your insights on human behaviour. I got this at hand: a musician, pianist. Lots of potential, 34 years old, plays it all by ❤ and i mean Rachmaninoff, bach, Beethoven, mozart, Schumann,..... But, and now it comes. He always finds things to boycott himself and blame it on others. I his eyes people want to give him an opportunity and then take it away. Off course, if you invest in someone like that, you as an investor want to see you investment thrive. But the way to that moment is so stressful that enjoying the present moment is not possible anymore. How can this be corrected. So that rehearsal, preparation and delivering is as fun and beautiful as it has to be. Music is supposed to be serious but fun. Now it is a nightmare in elm Street or Belgium. Do you have a view on this kind of .... trouble's? Thanx for your input and keep on doing what you're good in. Greetings from Europe Belgium Belgium

I think the South African Corporates need you. Some employees get physically assaulted by the people in charge. I thought they were exaggerating but my sister witnessed it whilst doing measurements for a design change in one of the buildings. When 5 or 6 people from completely different companies, complain of physical assault or witnessing an assault and then having a third party witness it...there has to some validity to it.

Yeah, but what about a boss who shouts at employees and makes derogatory remarks? I consider myself empathetic, just there are boundaries. I can understand someone can be mean under some difficult circumstances, but what happen when they are over the top in a repetitive pattern?

That sounds like a really difficult situation you are dealing with. And it must be frustrating & demoralizing to deal with an abusive boss. One thing that I have found with empathy that has really helped me is to verbalize it even (especially) when it doesn't make sense to. I have noticed that when I used empathy( verbalizing what the world looks like from that person's eyes) on the nastiest, meanest people, miraculously, their energy shifted and they even begin to empathize(they are now making comments and asking questions that signal they care what's going on in my world and not just theirs) with me and with kindness!

Don't base your thoughts about any particular person on what other people say or encourage you to think, certainly not in the negative sense, anyway. You never know what agenda is being served to promote those ideas. While there can be a negative agenda behind saying good things about a person, that is highly unlikely. You should still observe and draw your own conclusions.

You're too young and used to having everything easy. That's not real life. Never was. The human condition is one which can be characterized by varying degrees of suffering. You need a good reason to shoulder that, and keep moving forward. You need purpose and meaning in life to justify the suffering. If you think that's something most people can get out of working entry-level jobs, then you're sadly mistaken. Volunteer your time to help others. Spend time getting to know new people. Step willingly outside of your comfort zone, just to see it goes. Learn something new about yourself whenever possible. Quit blaming and judging outwardly, and turn that critical eye inward onto yourself. Be honest with yourself, but be caring. Notice things you should and could improve about yourself and your own life. Set small, realistic goals. Reach them, then set new ones. If you miss at least you have an opportunity to learn why, and then perhaps you can retool the goal to make it more achievable before you try again. Improve yourself by just 10%, and watch how much more opportunity comes along. Best of luck, and never give up.

You're delusional, Harry. The THREAT comes from division, which is the only product that BOTH "parties" are pushing. Turn off the news, get off of social media, and go out and about into your locality and meet people. Volunteer to help those in need. Learn about the folks around you. You'll never know what you're missing if you stick to hating half of the country just because some paid actor on TV tells you to. Wake up, Harry. You're living in fear and in hatred. Go be the reason for people's joy, and you'll get it back in droves.

@@mickeyconnor830 the root of most problems at a company is poor leadership. If the company has good leadership and this is an isolated poor manager then I agree that change can happen. Especially if it is a younger manager who is still learning. But if the problem is systemic leadership and/or the poor leader is set in his ways then the only way to enact change is to resign. Poor leaders lack self reflection so the only way the company will see a problem is if many people leave. Otherwise, they’ll just blame the employees. I’ve seen it too many times - “well, we shouldn’t have hired that guy.”
