One thing that wouldve been good to mention about the Buu Saga - everyone was focused on getting a massive power boost and trying to defeat Buu by themselves rather than trying to work as a team to defeat the main villain (until the Spirit Bomb). That's one aspect I liked so much about the Buu Saga, for the first time gaining a new more powerful transformation wasnt enough to win a fight.

I think making Gohan the MC and making him juggle earth's defense and a normal life/meeting chi chi's expectations would have been a good arc.

What bothers me with Gohan isn't that he doesn't train as much as Goku and Vegeta, it's that he doesn't train AT ALL but gets to be as powerful as them whenever he wants to. For real: he gets wrecked in ressurection of F, trains for 1 afternoon and catches up to Goku for the ToP. Stops training, sees Pan in danger and gets a new transformation which makes as (if not more) powerful than his dad,while the latter as been trained all this time by Whis, who coached a god of destruction. And they justify this by "Gohan has more potentiel". My man that's not potentiel that's an ass pull

Goku. He feels unreplaceable because the impacts he has made throughout the show. Goku in a way is like a teacher. Gohan has messed up sometimes in the story making him almost like us. He's quite literally a student. Gohan is a good character though he has characteristics that differ him from Goku, Goku learned a lot from DB to Z, same as Gohan but it feels like Goku teaches fans like you and I. He takes action. It's like when Gohan didn't decide to finish cell vs How Goku didn't finish Frieza. Gohan was cocky yet Goku didn't want to finish frieza most likely because of what Android 8 told him when he was a kid, although he ended up having to. Gohan's whole ordeal through Z was him having to grow stronger, even if it comes with trial and error. Gohan's adventure mostly makes him seem inadequate at specific moments like you said, but it's almost like Goku coming back over and over again as a way to almost be like how in "Wrath of the Dragon" (I know it's not canon) but when Goku says "If I don't do it, Who will?" Goku is a major part in everything since the beginning. He's the hope of the universe. As for in Super Hero seeing as Gohan ends up defeating Cell almost right away, It seems like it's him learning all of the lessons he needed to grow as a character, although I don't know if that'll make him a viable Teacher for everyone watching but he should've been that way right after the Cell Saga, though in a sense, since he didn't repeat his mistake, He's on that same path that Goku was on throughout the series. I feel like Gohan as the MC would make the show bland. Most MC’s are like him. With great power comes great responsibility. He has to juggle his personal life and his hero life. It’s typical, we see it all the time. Toriyama doesn’t like to be typical, he likes to subvert expectations. So of course he’d let Goku remain as the MC, he makes Dragon Ball what is. Gohan doesn’t really fit that. He doesn’t really fit what DB needs in my opinion.

Gohan always seemed unfocused until the new bad guy shows , where’s as Goku is always preparing for the next challenge to earth. Goten, Trunks and Pan have the same issue, Uub might be different post End of Z.

Trying to look at it from Toriyama's perspective, I think it's just because Goku was easier to write for. He craved action and was always looking to surpass himself and seek out strong opponents, even if it meant sometimes doing questionable things like letting Gero finish the androids. It made the plots easier to write for. Gohan on the other hand didn't care about fighting and only did it out of necessity, which meant Toriyama would basically have to find some way to drag him into the conflict while accounting for his fighting inactivity and lack of desire for action at the same time. Hell, someone else had to awaken Gohan's power in the Buu arc for him. Like someone else in the comments said, Goku was proactive, Gohan was reactive. I still think it was definitely possible to write entertaining stories with Gohan as the lead, but going off what we know of Toriyama, he wanted to keep things as simple and easy as possible while writing Dragon Ball, and Goku allowed him to do that moreso than Gohan did.

Right now Goku doesn't even act like Goku. His personality was changed the moment Super was a thing. We didn't need scholar superhero School Kid Gohan, you didn't need to make another Goku but you didn't need to make a Yamcha out of Gohan.

Sounds like the real answer is that tori didn’t know how to write gohan as the main character, not that he isn’t suited for it.

The reason Goku is more suited as the MC over Gohan is the narrative is based on Journey to the West and Sun Wukong, a coming of age/self discovery story through martial arts philosophy and Goku embodies that more than anybody in the series. On top of that, his lessons he needed to learn that are established at the beginning of Z/Kai aren’t complete when the Cell Saga ends.

Gohan can be the main character but the story would have to be written differently cuz gohan is a different person than goku. Gohan is more like superman than goku is i.e a gohan story would have him getting stronger to protect his loved ones more than for the thrill of a fight. While goku loves to continously improve his fighting skills by going against strong opponents which happens to be the bad guys.

Toriyama probably decided to do it before he did it. I think by the time Vegeta criticized him, toriyama had already decided(like during the HS stuff, as the quote mentions, so Vegeta is like the mouthpiece saying what the issue is). And by the time they go into the ship to fight babiddi's enemies, Goku becomes the main character. Remember how they make a big deal of dabura, but we already know he's not the main bad guy. He's a decoy or henchman. It's established that Goku has surpassed Gohan at that point too. And Vegeta's fight demonstrates his set up. But Goku's arc sets up Vegeta's turn. Which leads to a more "impactful" fight between Goku and Vegeta than dabura and Gohan. Really good vid btw

If you check the manga version of events, the fight between Goku and Vegeta isn't really the focus there, it is barely shown, and it's treated as a background incident to the drama surrounding Buu's return of which Gohan is the main focus, that, and coupled with the focus on Goku telling Gohan to get angry etc. makes me think Toriyama didin't really decide Goku should be back as main character during the Majin Vegeta portion, after all Goku barely does anything other than fight in the background and get knocked out. I feel it is only at one point after Gohan is left unconscious by Buu, Vegeta blows up, and Goku wakes up that Toriyama decided to make the switch. For a while he probably intended to leave Gohan out of the action to save him for the last fight kind of like what he did with Goku during the Piccolo, Saiyan and Frieza arcs, essentially keeping him as the main hero, but before it was all said and done he shifted.

I always thought Gohan was just never willing to start the fight, he would always counter someone even especially if the big bad or any threat tried to battle him firsthand.

Gohan to me has been the Red Boy from the Journey to the West myth. Basically Overpowered when he wants to be, but the characters arrogance always holds him back in a way. Everytime Gohan gets stronger he gets a little smirk and loses in the plot in some way. Gohan Blanco being the recent example which hasn't had the other shoe drop yet(I think that will happen vs the upcoming Black Frieza arc).

Goku is simply too iconic to replace. Any time Gohan is praised (rightfully so) it's done through a passive comparison with Goku, he's always in the back of your mind even when you're witnessing Gohan or Vegeta or Piccolo doing something great because Goku is the benchmark and the icon that holds everything together. Goku IS Dragon Ball and there's nothing wrong with it, if anyone earned to be at that top spot it's him.

Gohan shouldn't really be ' exploding ' after his fight with cell so the fact he's getting rage boosts that are anything but short term bursts is a betryal to his character - Super saiyan 2 was the climax of gohan's rage this was him finally letting go and adopting his pent up emotions as part of him and his fighting style the fact gohan can get a little mad and surpass literally everyone in his universe and stay there is not only out of character for him post cell but just bad power scaling and it baffles me how many people are fine with it. This is part of the reason I don't like gohan " fans " because they're not actually fans of Gohan's character they just like him because of the rage moments he had when he was a kid and if he isn't crushing his oppenents with overwhelming strength they don't like him anymore

Great vid. I personally think that the type of arc that would make sense for Gohan's development as a character was not the type of story that Toriyama could write. Toriyama tended to fall back on a certain set of tropes when writing the later half of the series and Gohan's personality doesn't fit that type of story arc because he has interests in NORMAL people things and a peaceful existence, instead of interests in pushing his limits even in the midst of life or death situations. A better way to direct the Buu Arc would've been for Buu's resurection to involve possessing Videl and Gohan have to find a way beyond fighting harder to stop her and save her. Could've fell back on some magical themes used in early Dragon Ball and alluded too in the actual arc.

Good video. Gohan is a passive character and that doesn't work for Dragonball, while Goku who is an active character does work for the story. Also good tidbit on the super saiyan eyes. I know Mista Fusion also went into it for detail but giving Goku "Vegeta eyes" shows a more serious and evil side. Sadly Trunks normally has it, but that is a physical trait he gets from Vegeta and not from any personality ones

Gohan feels like a "normal" MC to me, whilst Goku feels far more entertaining because of his quirks and his uniqueness. Gohan stops fights, whereas Goku starts fights. The second is more fun to watch.

It's bad writing. Logically when the planet has been under threat more than once and you have the power to stop it, you would feel morally obligated to at least try and maintain that power. But they don't let Gohan do that, it has to be Goku cause he's more popular or something. Fully agree with basically everything it prob was the time between gohan going to train to super buu where the idea of goku started to creep back in the mind of Toriyama. Cuz at least in the manga, the majin vegeta ss2 goku fight wasnt that much of a focus and gohan was still the one to face the main villain. Then Gohan came back after the typical training/power-up and beat down buu but he cant just one shot him or it would be boring so u get buutenks but then thats prob where toriyama was like "hmm where do I take this?" brought goku to have them fuse but then realized a gokhan fusion wouldnt really do anything for the story. i mean maybe it could have work by representing goku and gohan are equal characters which as u said, gohan works when hes not always in the spotlight so u can have them alternate but I like where we headed cuz the kid buu portion is greatness

It’s because the writers have no idea what they are doing. They could have the show with Goku and Gohan being a main duo.

Gohan's only interesting when he becomes a rage monster. That's all anybody ever remembers about him... that and his baby tantrum against Cell. Rage monsters aren't interesting characters for very long, which is why Broly is a movie only character. The spectacle of a rage monster going full on berserker is only interesting for a short moment, and then it just becomes boring once that shock and awe has run out. This is why Gohan goes so long between rage boosting, and why he never followed through. Because it would be boring if the entire thing was just "make Gohan mad, watch as he becomes strongest, end fight". And this is also why his baby tantrum fight against Cell is so remembered, because it was the one time he managed to follow through, even if it wasn't him in his rage monster mode. Gohan's thing was rage boosting. To make him anything else takes away the thing he's known for, and it would make him just be Goku. If you kept him as the main character and his entire rage boosting thing was kept, it would be boring very quickly. So it was either make Gohan not himself, or have a dull character that people would get tired of. This is why Goku was brought back. Because why have somebody just be a copy of Goku when you can have Goku? And this way Gohan can retain his character of being a rage monster, to have those spectacle moments when need be.

Gohan's training on kaio shin's planet is similar to similar to the z fighters waiting for Goku running down snake way, to arrive on Namek, to heal in the healing tank, to recover from the heart virus, and to come out of the room of spirit and time. Based toriyama's writing goham's training and power up on kaio shin planet is a main character trait

I’m not gonna lie I’m completely fine with the “main character” switching through the years, but definitively becoming Goku, because I feel Goku is a far superior main character when it comes to the endless power that an a must be produced in today’s arcs.

The problem is the Gohan isn't even like, really a character? He's almost just like a plot device, something to solve a problem or force the bad guy to show us his ever super stronger form when he gets mad. One of his only character traits is that he doesn't like fighting, and unless we erase that completely and just make him Goku but boring, it's hard for him to carry a story when he has no real goals that mesh at all with Dragon Ball's style. For as many problems as Goku has, which comes down to Toriyama's writing, he is a very, very active character. For better and for worse, he is the one instigating events in the story

Like seeing Gohan be the MC and get the spotlight during times of transitions. Love seeing him step in when he needs to do, personally I identify with him more so than Goku and Vegeta.

I’ve been asking this question when it comes to anime mcs taking over a series. The only franchise that successfully does mc transitions is the JoJo series but gohan in dragon ball or boruto in Naruto get stuck in the shadows of Naruto and goku, if the sons are to strong even when it’s justified in universe fans hate it but when they become to weak and can’t surpass the mc fans call them useless. It’s like their in a lose lose situation. A non anime comparison is the avatar series with korra and aang. People say korra was to op at her age but when we follow korra she’s been training for years to masters the elements while aang who ran away from his responsibilities for 100 years not only mastered the elements in 1 year but defeated the Fire lord when he was at his strongest and gained energy bending all at the age of 12-13 while korra was around 16 or 17 and unlike aang had been training for years but she’s called the Mary sue when aang was more Mary sue by comparison given the circumstances

he easily could have replaced Goku, it just means that Toriyama would have to be more clever and mix things up a bit, because frankly it shifting for Goku to really be the main character, that effectively took a sledgehammer to the Buu Saga, undoing basically every major aspect of what he was originally going for just to spin around for a million years watching characters do increasingly stupid and often out of character decisions so the plot could happen. If he stuck with the Gohan idea, it'd be akin to the tone and template shift that was between Piccolo Jr's arc and Raditz' arc.

One thing that has always pissed ne off with most DB fans is that they constantly shit on Goha for not training or fighting like Goku. Gohan doesn't have the same hunger for battle like Goku and Vegeta as he only fights when its necessary. Also i think some people need to understand that Gohan can't keep up with his training because he's got a job and family to take care of. I disagree. Gohan was a developing character and with the way he was going, following in his fathers footsteps was the way to go and he wanted to do that. I look at Future Gohan as a sneak peak into the man Gohan was becoming. People say he was only that way because of the timeline he was in but i disagree. Sure, their would have been differences for sure but i doubt Gohan was supposed to be the kind of guy we see in the Buu arc. What people dont understand is the whole series was suffering from the Buu arc for its overly comedic and laidback tone and Gohan is only a number on the long casualty list from that era. Gohan could have been ANYBODY going into the Buu arc but Toriyama chose to write him in this extremely sheltered way. He didnt HAVE to be this way but he is and the constant messaging to us with his character is that he must be more responsible like his father and he never is. It went against the character he was being built up as for years prior and it goes against his character now to be the way he is. End point is this: Toriyama could have written Gohan in any way he wanted to facilitate the future story. And any other way would have been better than THIS.

in my opinion (as somebody who hasnt watched the full video yet, mind you), i think the main reason why gohan can't replace goku comes down to the fact that gohan doesn't and has never seeked out conflict or trouble. he only ever got involved in situations out of a sense of obligation towards people who kept sacrificing themselves for him, and he's very passive otherwise. gohan was never a driving force in the story. meanwhile, even in early dragon ball where goku hadn't been taught by master roshi, goku and friends have always been motivated by something and have sought out conflicts. first it was the dragon balls, then it was seeking out stronger opponents. reacting to situations that happen TO them is just something that is layered on top of that to change the main character's perspective on a situation. like how krillin's death in original dragon ball impacted the way goku treated the concept of death. gohan, on the other hand, is COMPLETELY reactionary, and has been ever since he was introduced in the saiyan saga. and thats actually fine when he's a supporting character, and fine when he's a secondary main character, but he lacks the driving motivation in the story that allows him to come into conflict with others. it also makes it hard to justify him keeping up with other characters and keeping up his training. and like, fighting out of his sense of obligation is okay and all. but theres nothing he can really LEARN and develop out of that. he'd be an okay MC, but not a great one long-term. he works good for like, bojack movie, but imagine if that was the whole show after that. villain shows up, gohan fights him out of obligation, he learns nothing since he learned everything he possibly could have against cell, repeat. i think thats why vegeta stuck out as a main character more than gohan: his themes and motivations as a character give him more room to grow. not only does vegeta's warrior pride let him seek conflict, but it also gives him lessons to learn and things to develop, even after the buu saga. goku's training does too, as long as you're able to give him lessons to learn related to fighting, since he's fallen into a lot of pitfalls and odd habits since Z. one of the things i think dragon ball super was missing is a main character that gets good development. DBZ followed goku after he was done his character development but it worked because you had both gohan AND vegeta who were constantly learning and getting character development. and even then, you still had goku coming to terms with his saiyan heritage. meanwhile in DBS its like the flashy colors and flying combat is what gets all the focus, until UI where the main character FINALLY learns a new lesson, that being to rely on technique more than power levels. DBS could have had more substance had it either introduced a new character to give development to, or given actual lessons to goku and vegeta. and thats why i like the recent DBS manga's training of goku and vegeta under whis and beerus, because goku's genuinely learning a lesson on how to come up with a technique on his own, and vegeta is finally accepting teaching from someone else, and both have been given something to master that we actually get to watch them master. it also had granolah, who was a main character who got plenty of development, and as a result they're employing two ways of having a through-line in the story. theres also the issue of screen time for side characters, and once goku was revived, it was basically over for gohan since he never trained unless he was reacting to a threat. and thats another area DBS fails in, because at least in Z goku was gone for most of the plot which allowed the side characters to actually participate in it. in super everybody except goku isn't very helpful, except vegeta because his fans get very mad when he starts lacking. but i think the meta-narrative reason that "gohan just doesn't seek conflict and doesn't have any lessons to learn" is basically why gohan stopped being the main character. at least dragon ball super hero gave gohan something that justifies his use in modern material, but don't expect him to take the lead role from goku any time soon. hes a good side/supporting character, and a great deuteragonist, but post-cell-saga-gohan is not a great MAIN character.

Honestly they should have made android 21 be the main villain. With one change. Just make her based off of og73, with all of the data of og73, the red ribbon army, and Gero gathered, programmed into her. They could have spared her, keeping her as a future character. Her without the majin side corrupting her, would have been a great character, the greatest potential, a massive arsenal of fighting styles, and techniques, she would be a genius in science, and biology which could be very useful, and her being able to copy any power or ability she could have been a great addition to the series. She could be working with Bulma again, since she apparently worked for her in one of her origin stories from the games, with her grandson. Goku, and Vegeta could handle the battles away from the earth.

I wish Boruto didn't replace Naruto. Or at least they didn't have to nerf him. They never nerfed Goku when Gohan took the spotlight...

One of Piccolo goals is to get Gohan back into fighting shape which is something everyone wants to see. Why? Why do people want to see this? It’s not in his character as outlined in this video thus it has to be done in awkward ways like Kio powering him up or him meditating for some hours or like in Super by it just happening. Gohan passive role of not doing anything isn’t repetition, it’s who he is. That’s his character. The repetition is Piccolo (and the fans) trying to change him over and over again when that’s not who he is. Goku is back, Vegita is there as is Broly. Piccolo character is like theirs so I get him but Gohan never has been and fans seem to rather he be Goku than the character he was written to be.

But that’s the thing Gohan didn’t want to study at certain points. He wanted to be part of the action with his dad.

I think there's a couple reasons why he lost the main spot going forward 1: He doesn't have any friends of his own to play off of and grow the story outside of Videl 2: Toriyama didn't want to write Dragon Ball over again and build all them characters going forward just to make him the main cause it's too time consuming 3: He should've did a spinoff to reset the board completely so we the audience knows it's his story going forward so we can finally view the world thru his eyes cause as apart of Z it's Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, Krillin, etc... story and he's just another strongman in a full cast that we know will step up everytime while he's finally seeing the world and growing 4: Nobody wants to abandon the main cast cause Gohan going to high school and possibly finding a girl he likes doesn't compare to Vegeta fighting an enemy and Goku & Piccolo training for the next battle, ultimately Toriyama didn't want to do the same thing twice is what it came down to and you can see that in Super. He just wants to introduce people and have a challenge and on to the next

This is what so many people fail to understand. All the Stan’s scream that gohan should have took over but ultimately they can’t answer the most basic question “why?” What benefit would the story get from having gohan as the protagonist? Dragon ball became a power up fest anyways, doesn’t matter what saiyan you put in that role, there’s still gonna be BS power ups regardless. His whole character is he doesn’t want to fight, just as it was said in the video, if you want him to fight, he just becomes another goku. Gohans only other defining traits are his intelligence and potential. Intelligence rarely plays a role in DB and his potential only exacerbates DB’s already awful power creep and would require more BS power ups so everyone else could stay relevant. All this and that still doesn’t bring up his “rage boosts” which translates to “I can be as strong as the plot needs me to be” (which IS NOT HEALTHY for a story).

Sure, to the heart of DB arguably goku is the better fit, but an argument can be said that a shift in the story could’ve made gohan work. I’ve seen fan fictions do it pretty well. I mean, look at trunks. People love him and although he isn’t a bloodthirsty warrior he is written well enough to keep interest. You don’t have to make gohan a goku clone, but I think toriyama possibly couldn’t just write an interesting story with goku out the way completely and gohan in charge

It confuses me how salty people are about Gohan not being the MC when the way he was pushed into that role was so forced as the arc barely had anything to do with him and then he suddenly becomes the focus for the last 10% of it.
