There was a militant vegan at my high school that everyone hated (it was far rarer then, so he was the only one). He caused a big scene in the cafeteria once, one of those standing up on the table "Can I have everyone's attention?" moments followed by self righteous preaching. I grew up in one of those households, I couldn't watch it growing up but watched it after I left home, and laughed and laughed. Now I'm a parent, and I still am a Christian, but I won't let my child watch just anything she wants. She can watch what she wants when she leaves home one day. Back then, Christians just didn't watch those shows, I don't remember them going after Jerry trying to cancel him or call for harm on anyone.
