Thanks for another informative video ! It's been a few decades since I've purchased a vintage watch, is there such a thing as a " restored " vintage piece ? And if so, could you give us some examples of what you would consider a good restoration. Thanks Jory !❤

I've seen several of these on Ebay. Some say they have restored dials, some don't. But if it's well done, and costs a lot less, and it's a real Omega, I still don't understand why you shouldn't get one. They're so pretty:)

If it's well done, has a genuine movement and case, and costs a lot less, it's fine if you personally like the watch and just want to wear it. But, understand it will not have nearly as much resale value since it has lost its status as a genuine antique. Sometimes the redials are colorways that were never originally produced, as opposed to just touch-ups, so hardcore collectors may roll their eyes after easily spotting the inaccuracy. I have a couple untouched vintage Omegas but I have well done redial of a favorite style that I could never find in good shape. The well done redials sometimes come with buffed cases. This was appreciated for mine because it originally had 3 different finishes which could not easily be discerned on most worn examples I found. They took the time to refinish it properly and it looks great. I think buffing the case is also considered a no-no with hardcore collectors.

@Noy. Because your Father owned a very well made watch you will definitely be able to have it restored to the condition that will enable you to later gift the watch to a younger generation. But as my late wife was responsible for managing the largest group of Jewelry Stores in Australia, with 128 shops, I well know that most Jewelry Stores and other Watch Retailers are not the old fashioned Watch Makers and "Farm out" maintenance and repair work. As I am in Melbourne Australia I can't recommend the best way to get the Omega brought back to the condition that your sentiment warrants. If I was doing this in Australia, when my market place knowledge is dated, I would telephone the prime Distribution Office and ask could they give you a list of "Omega Approved" Watch Makers. They will definitely help you because it's what they are there for. That's a lot of trouble, but it's the best way to preserve your great memories. Phil.

Jory, the most likely reason why the letter spacing and the lettering baseline is so obviously wrong, is not that the typography system is counterfeit, because type design is complex and expensive to develop. It's because quality fonts have been reproduced on modern, but very cheap printers, which is where the kerning and baseline faults originate. I started my computer industry career selling Varityper "Cold Type" and the first Commercial Office grade computer phototypesetting in Australia in 1968 and Jacquard the first computer based wordprocessing equipment in 1972 and the Printer components were fantastically expensive, because the output had to compete with the end result from very, very, expensive and complex Hot Metal typesetting. 50plus years later every teenager with an illegal copy of Microsoft Word and a $50 Canon inkjet printer, thinks he can forge a Driver's Licence or produce a replica Omega Watch dial. Welcome to my world. Phil.

You could say there is a lot of snobbery amongst watch collectors and enthusiasts when it comes to repainted dials! But there's a huge market for professionally refurbished vintage watches that include repainted dials and, heaven forbid, polished cases. That's what some people want. A nice shiny new-looking vintage watch from one of the world's great brands such as Omega. So long as they know what they are buying then I see no problem with that whatsoever.

Hi Jory. Please enlighten me. Why were the 50's to 60's have most of the Dials were altered that they get converted to be having a fake dial later on? I have a 50's Constellation and the dial too was altered which you can classify as fake. This constellation of having a fake dial was confirmed to me by Omega Service Center. It seems to be a common thing. What's up with those era ?

Counterfeiting is a skilled "Profession" and while Rolex is an easy target, because few buyers are truly knowledgeable, lesser value brands are an easy and profitable target, because not only is there less scrutiny, but there is far less Media coverage. I found it by looking in the Yellow Pages telephone directory, under Watch Makers Supplies. I also bought a book on Watchmaking, printed in England, from a major second hand Book Shop. It was published in England during the 1950s and it showed you how to service a watch, and how to cut springs to fit, when the original has snapped. If you looked on the Internet for Technical Book Suppliers, then looked for both Watchmaking and Watch Repair books, you will find the answers you seek. Good luck looking. Phil.

I inherited a De Ville automatic gold-filled circa 1970(?) from someone who was a CEO and was a real stickler for punctuality, which means his watch was serviced regularly. It's been sitting in a drawer for twenty-one years. I feel silly hanging onto it just to look at a couple times a year just for sentimental reasons. Sometimes I think someone who would actually wear the thing should have it. Not sure what to do with it and I don't fancy the hassle of dealing with buyers who may or may not believe in its genuineness. Living in the sticks does limit my options regarding selling it. What to do???

@Dan Brovont. Dan, it is possible that the cause of your problem is the electronic equipment some Postal Service providers use for automatically scanning small mail items. While my knowledge is dated, because I am 82 and it's been a while since I've worked with such low level technology. But I started my Engineering career with the first Australian manufacturers of X-ray and Electromedical equipment and at the age of 16 produced many of the Engineering Drawings required for the manufacturing of the first 250,000 volt Deep Therapy X-ray installation in Australia. So I do understand the problems of wearing mechanical watches near that sort of equipment. Later the largest Power Stations in Australia were my customers and had the same EMF problem. I am sure that a few of the Engineering Profession who follow the Channel could provide an update on my dated thoughts. Phil.

But mine is the real one, I send it to Omega Switzerland for service and I got it back like new and with a certificate. Omega won't service fake ones. As a vintage Omega collector, I have to disagree with this KZfaqr. Many vintage watches, regardless of the brand, go through some restoration. A touch-up dial doesn't mean that Omega is a fake. Granted, if the touch-up/redial was done poorly, it affects the value quite a bit. But even then, there is still some values for some collectors. I personally have collected old 1930's non-running Omega watches and had to run around to find a horologist to fix the watch. He had to hand made some parts to get the watch to run again. Even then, the accuracy of the watch was shot - it ran 4 minutes slow in 24 hours. That's perfectly okay with me; I am not collecting for a perfect, accurate watch. I am collecting history, collecting memories.

Part of the hobby is to educate yourself, of what is legit and what is not. If you don't want to, you gotta pay others, that know what they are selling. There is no money to be saved in buying vintage watches. Evaluation of a fair price is part of it too. If you don't want to hassle yourself around with the one or the other, it will not hassle you anyway and you will wear a Mumbai Frankenstein watch with pride.

Damn shame, the only vintage watches I would have considered. Thank you Jory 👌🏻 I'll stick to new ones from ADs. Cheers 👍🏻

Same here. Vintage watches are old and probably are going to need servicing. I have a 10 year old Oyster Perpetual that keeps great time. It’s never been serviced. I asked my AD how much just to to a preventative maintenance. He wanted $1200 for a watch that works perfectly. I asked a very popular watch site on KZfaq, that has a store and a Master Watchmaker on staff and he quoted $450. I would go for the $450 because I love the watch, but sending it across country and back again scares me.

Same, I couldn't catch those kerning discrepancies that Jory pointed out, even AFTER he zoomed in and was talking about them. I guess I have to look at more dials hahaha

As soon as I saw the watch at 1:45 I saw the horrible seamaster script (specifically the S) and knew it was fake. Once you've owned the real thing (considering it is authentic of course) it makes it easy to spot differences such as that one.

While I agree with the overall premise of this video, at the end of the day though, who cares? If the buyer likes something, even if it's redialled, they should buy it. The first Omega you showed was very nice and as a collector myself, would have no issue buying it and enjoying it. But yes, the 2nd and 3rd Omega look horrible. Just examine the watch thoroughly, check if the script looks neat and well applied, redialled or not, and then decide whether it's worth the asking price.

It’s like every damn omega on ebay too, and they are *not* priced aggressively-anywhere between $400 and $900 currently. It’s ridiculous. It’s completely ruined the market for genuine, well worn high-quality vintage omegas.

Good to know because I just started looking around casually for one, noticed all the pricing seems really nice, but there’s just too many bad ones out there. Are the more modern examples on eBay any better or are they still bad offenders too? I’m looking at 90’s era.

i think there is a distinction between a poorly restored / refinished dial, and a fake. I remember seeing one where the omega logo was covering the lettering somehow and it sold for a retarded amount of money

A lot of these dials aren't fake but just amateurishly refinished. Swiss dials rot after just a few years. One of the reasons I prefer Seiko.

Omega is a sort of offender. You'd have hoped that a watch that was called Seamaster would have been better sealed against moisture. That's the whole reason why it sometimes seems that one half of 1960s Seamasters have ruined dials and the other half have fake dials. Roamer watches of the same period were better sealed and have a better dial survival rate.

I think you are wrong. You don't take into consideration the fact that watches are over 50 years old and they weren't as careful with details back then as they do today! go see specialists !! moreover, restoring a watch case back does not mean that it is a counterfeit.

@Mike Brown. Next time you buy a watch made in India get a Titan. While a lot of their range is flamboyant, there classic style watches are well made. I have had a solid gold case dress match for 20 years and I wear it 2-3 days every week as an alternative to my plain golf Omega Seamaster dress watch. The Titan looks of equal quality and design, because when I bought it I got it from a major Omega Dealer. Phil.
