@Dulces me too 😂. My brother's wife can't cook a bit, but thinks she can. After tasting her food I know why her son hates certain foods. He tried my spaghetti after declaring he doesn't like it. I told him to just try one bite then he can have something else if he didn't like it. He ate two servings. She insisted on bringing lasagna and bragged about how good it was. It was pasta, canned tomato sauce and ricotta cheese with a tiny bit of shredded cheese on top. Didn't even season it.

I work at a restaurant... The biggest difference is that our produce is fresher. It comes direct from the farm every 2-3 days, doesn't sit on a store shelf. Fresh matters. Salt will make salads taste better, but will also make the salad wilt if you don't eat it _right away._

Make sure any salad you sprinkle salt on is eaten right away and not put in the fridge overnight. Salt causes vegetables to release their water content which then turns them mushy. Will be trying out this suggestion in the video though.

I have worked at cafés, food trucks, diners, fine dining, meat and threes, buffets, pizza joints, bars, chain restaurants.... and also, never once seen restaurants season their salads. What I have noticed that makes them taste amazing is having veggies prepped but fresh, ice cold salads, home made dressings, eggs that are not overboiled, fresh black pepper, good cheeses, quality ingredients such as olives, capers, artichoke, home made croutons, etc, and extremely clean and fresh greens. The right balance of salt, acidity, rich and light flavors will give you a amazing salad when made fresh.

Me too. Most salads I had at restaurants were bland, usually just a ton of leafy greens (mostly iceberg lettuce and baby spinach) with few cocktail tomatoes and that's it. If there was any dressing, they used it sparingly and didn't toss the salad. The only tasty salad I can get is at that vegan place, there's much more going taste- and texture-wise on and the dressing is heavenly, it's a good salad despite having corn and arugula which I both hate and put aside. Their other salads are fine, but that one is dope. And at home every salad tastes great, no matter if I do dressing from scratch or mix dry dressing herbal mix with oil and water / vinegar / citrus juice. And everyone else in the comments (not counting you both) writes about restaurant salads being tastier. Where are they all eating at? 😅

Yeah they don't presalt the salads either. It would be so impractical. At least I've never seen it, and I've seen my fair share of cooks dressing salads last minute as a waiter. The ingredients need to remain crunchy and fresh for two solid hours each shift, no way you salt them beforehand as it would just draw the moisture out after half an hour or so. Maybe in school kitchens, idk. Just switch the quantity for some sugar and/or msg in your dressing spices instead of the full salt dose, you'll get closer to what restaurants achieve. Also fun fact, himalayan salt is just pink salt, the colour doesn't even have to be natural because it's just a commercial label, not an actual controlled product with strict guidelines for the production. No salt industries exist in the himalayas anyway. It's overpriced coloured salt, nothing more or less to it. You need more minerals, take supplements, don't change your table salt for bougie overpriced salt.

Yes, my most favorite salad! I add cilantro avocado and chopped strawberries to my lettuce. Preferably the greener lettuce types. I salt and pepper it up! Without ANY other dressings at all. Yum! Although, i must add, I've surely been plenty ridiculed and/or questioned as to why in the world i would add any salt. 🤷‍♀️Well, Thanks to Ms. Pam here, I feel much better!! 🎉❤woohoo!

Your video popped up in my home feed and I’m so glad it did! I’m always disappointed by my side salads. Rushing to make dinner after work tonight I remember your words “season the salad” all I did was put a handful for baby greens out of a bag add cucumbers, red bell pepper and cherry tomatoes from the garden then a few dashes of red wine vinegar, garlic powder, cracked pepper and salt. 🤯 it was so delicious went perfectly with my spaghetti and veggie balls. Thank you so much for the amazing tip. You have changed our dinners for years to come 💚🥗

We were taught by chef in school to ALWAYS season the lettuce. Salt it. Salt everything. Dessert needs salt, or you won’t get the depth of flavour.

Should try seasoning your salad and then just drizzling with oil, olive or whatever kind you prefer. It is amazing how delicious the veggies taste with just the seasoning when they aren't drowned in dressing. So yummy!

Nice video! 😊 I’m not a fan of salad dressing, so when I make a salad (lettuce, cucumbers, red onion, tomatoes, avocado) I usually make my own dressing too. To make the dressing, I combine 2 tbs olive oil & 3 tbs soy sauce and add a pinch of black pepper and shake/mix well. The soy sauce provides the perfect amount of saltiness and some depth. It’s delicious!

Great, simple, affordable advice to make home cooking more palatable. Great video! I’m a fan of the bagged pre-made salads myself and find them tasty the way they are - just wish they came with about 4x the dressing 😂 always have to add a ton of dressing. Adding a tuna pouch is a great cheap and shelf stable way to add protein too during this difficult times or for those without a fridge / kitchen / cooking facilities, living in shelters or unhoused. I lived without a fridge for 10 months and on grocery day I would still enjoy a bagged salad but have to eat it quick without refrigeration. God is good because I finally got a fridge but still don’t have any other cooking facilities or tools so little things like these tips are a lifesaver to spice things up when you can’t do much.

I think another reason why food prepared by others tastes better is because of the sensory experience. Cooking engages multiple senses like sight, smell, and touch. When someone else cooks for you, it's like experiencing the food with fresh senses, which adds to the overall enjoyment. On the other hand, when you cook the food yourself, you might become desensitized to certain smells or flavors along the way, which can make a difference in taste.

It's the mystery...and newness and excitement. Yeah that's probably part of it. The experience and expectation releases chemicals not released probably otherwise but maybe is similar when you are making something for the very first time if it isn't too difficult or frustrating. Mood matters...Ambiance too. Good pts

As someone who has cooked at home for many many years, this is true. When i cook, i have to wait a bit before i eat because I've already been smelling the food for awhile and seeing it and touching it and all that. Sometimes i really don't even want to eat it after I've spent a bunch of time preparing it. This is why I feel the restaurant experience is nice. Plus, a restaurant goes through a lot to make things look good, even if it's something pretty ordinary. So, it feels good to have a nice looking plate of hot food served to you. I mean, you're hungry, it smells good, it looks good. I worked In a restaurant for eleven years and we got to eat cheap as employees, but i rarely ate there either because again, i smelled that food all day.

I love salads. All those fresh veggies don't come pre-seasoned. I salt my greens, tomatoes, onions, etc, even if I'm using croutons, cheese, dressing or vinaigrette and a salad mix in. The majority of whole foods aren't worth eating without salt.

My uncle always sprinkled Accent on the salads for his restaurants & catering business. We cut them up 1st thing in the morning, tossed them with Accent then covered & stored in the walk-in fridge. Onions were always sliced fresh with each order because onions actually absorb all airborne viruses & bacteria. The unsliced portion was always vacuum sealed before placing back in the fridge.

I've made many a restaurant salad and we don't season the lettuce. We clean our veggies really well and take off the wax on the cucumbers. The tomatoes are fresh the lettuce isn't brown. So check that first. The second thing is a signature dressing olive garden sells a good one the rest are crap I've never been able to duplicate restaurant salad dressing
