Star Wars has been in an incredibly strange place since Disney acquired the Lucasfilm IP. The Sequel Trilogy marked the beginning of many issues surrounding modern Star Wars with Disney Plus eventually adding to the problems. The Ahsoka Series has completed its run and despite it having some outstanding moments, it essentially sums up perfectly why the current state of Star Wars is so poor under Disney. We dive deep into how Ahsoka signifies why Star Wars is Dead.

Thrawn is a perfect example of a character only being as smart as the person writing him. He should have been a combination of Grant and Napoleon, instead we got Forrest Gump meets George McClellan.

Disney Plus is not the arena to introduce a non action villain such as Thrawn. A thinking villain will always need a few capable side henchmen in an expanded story and plotline.

Rogue One, Jedi Fallen Order and Andor is the only Star Wars I'm still invested in because it takes the universe it is in seriously, expands on it, introduces new and compelling characters, keeps nostalgia to an absolute minimum and the writing is superb. I will happily wait for Andor season 2 and ignore the rest of Star Wars till then. Like Marvel, I just want a break from it

I agree. It’s great to introduce new characters and there stories instead of sticking with old ones. Also the sticking with old characters is turning Star Wars into Marvel, where those characters have to be in that story, where it has to be connected. And I’m not saying that bring back those characters is a bad thing I’m saying that taking a break from them and introducing new characters is better. And if they bring back characters, do it in a meaningful way.

Is Andor actually good? I've been skeptical to watch. Aside from ahsoka, the last thing I watched was obi wan, and I only watched one episode and then some clips on KZfaq. I felt like since they did such a shit job on the shows about the characters I cared about, why would I bother watching the show about a character I don't really care about that much.

@@mikehunt69981 I strongly recommend Andor, it is a masterclass in every aspect of cinema and TV. Cassian doesn't have to be your favorite character, during the show you will find him more like a conduit or passage through which he will take you to meet new incredible characters like Luthen, Kino, Karn, Maarva, Brasso, Bix, Dedra, Partagas, Nemik, Vel, Skeen and a whole host of others brilliantly written and acted. It is the best of the best that was made in 2022 and is some of the best Star Wars content that has been produced since the OTs.

Eh, I'd wager Star Lord's actions are different from Sabine's because he was caught in the moment. Everything got dumped on him all at once and he basically went insane in 2 seconds flat. To me, that makes sense. Sabine on the other hand knew what the mission was, all the details of it, it wasn't all shoved in her face in 2 seconds. So, ironically, she actually comes off as truly insane as opposed to Star Lord. She had time to understand the ramifications of her actions and she still did it.

I agree, the comparison to Starlord is incorrect and Sabine is either insane, stupid, or incredibly selfish in her actions which are largely premeditated.
@MoRPho151
@MoRPho151 6 ай бұрын
I honestly didn’t cared about what Sabine did (she should have known better knowing that she had already evolution in Rebels but still I know Filoni doesn’t care that much on consistency) my problem is that an action with those implications is not being punished at some extent, or is not being portrayed in that tone. The encounter with Ezra was like if they didn’t saw each other from a week, it should have been more emotive. I don’t know cry or something, you literally sacrificed the galaxy for this xD. I understand why Ahsoka wants to support her the same way Anakin did, but they are happy and laughing like it doesn’t care because they can’t do anything about it now. Even if Ahsoka supported her she should have said something about it. Agree that the Star-lord mistake is another thing entirely. He just couldn’t manage to control his emotions and bursted, is a human reaction totally understandable. Sabine knew what she was doing and she decided it.

The best star wars stories i've seen in the last decade were from Jedi Order video games, fallen order and survivor. The two stories are honest stories of redemption and hope. Nothing quite as powerful and overwhelming as Red Dead 2, Ghost of Tshushima or The last of US, as far as video games are concerned. But it really felt good to have star wars stories that makes sense, that you feel invested in, and that doesn't end up being a dysfunctional family reunion story.

Yeah, I agree, he did great with his breakdown of Asohka and I felt exactly the same. It had many great high points, but yeah, I watched all of CW and Rebels, and the story really trailed off by the latter episodes. Plus the Baelin and Shin characters are (could have been? RIP Ray Stevenson) so amazing, but that trails off into serious "WTF happens now?" territory. For that matter, so does the Asokha et al. storylines. Anyway, I agree he did a great job but this show, and the IP in general have been so mismanaged I'm not sure it can recover. Disney has squandered it's good will and so many one time fans have said "I'm done with Star Wars" because of that mismanagement. Even woke nonsense aside (I love me some strong female leaders! They just don't seem to know how to write them), the writing is terrible. All of that is Andor aside which has great writers AND story tellers, and that can write amazing female characters. Well, characters period, but including female characters. I mean, when I am just as nervous for Mon talking with someone, or Dedra for whom I want to cheer but also revile at the same time, that's some great writing. Sadly, that creative team isn't in charge… Cheers.

@@charleshartley9597 nicely said. I kinda feel like all Disney writers have their board of ideas for a show or movie, but next to that white board is another one with inserted agendas written on it. And the writers then head one way with a story, but then remember they need to insert an agenda point, and then they lose the cohesion in the story telling. The agendas are SO LOUD as well, which turns you off, people want to be engrossed in the story, especially if it is a far far away place, and then you get lectured on women's rights, politics, diversity, men inferior to women. I am still convinced that Ahsoka was not the best choice of a character to base an entire show on. The original Star Wars Rebels and Clone Wars were always niche things even among Star Wars fandom. And if Disney desperately wanted a huge hit, the decision to make a show to continue from the events of those animated series makes no sense at all. Mandalorian worked because that show didn't rely on obscure pieces of Star Wars media. Even Andor, which viewership also was abysmal relied on a better known character and a popular movie, and it still failed to draw attention. Ahsoka was always destined to be a flop in terms of viewership simply because the majority of today's Star Wars audience will not know why they should care. And the worst thing is that it is absolutely not worth it to sit through 200+ episodes of SW Rebels and Clone Wars to catch up so you can watch Ahsoka properly as over a half of those episodes is decidedly mid and that big chunk of your time is better spent elsewhere as you can watch a ton of better shows in time you need to finish these two.

The only thing I got from this show was. You know who could have used an Anakin lesson of "Live or Die" Luke from the Last Jedi considering "Why do you think I went to some far away planet away from everyone (even thou there was a map). I came here to die" Also I don't quite get why Ahsoka needed that lesson considering the empire had fallen. If anything she should want to live more than any other time.

In my opinion, the only way to truly save Star Wars at this point is to completely up-end nearly everything Disney has done with it from 2015-present. Start from scratch. Make a new trilogy with direct input from George, based on his original ideas and the pre-existing canon before 2012. Make more movies instead of shows, relegating them to side stories just like before. I heavily doubt anything will get back to the way it was before Disney with Star Wars in its current state. There's nothing that can truly save this new canon.

I get what you explained about Sabine's decision but that only works if there is some deep emotional attachment to the person she is committing that act for. If Sabine was in love with Ezra (AND SHOWED IT) then sure that works. When Anakin forsook everything he knew and loved for Padme, it was already set up as such. That depth of personal attachment wasn't evident especially after they are reunited and both have about the same reaction as two close co-workers who haven't seen each other in a month or so. Yes I attribute much of this to crap writing and Disney/Lucasfilm wanting aesexual characters who have as much depth as a puddle of water. But in the end Sabine's motivation to give up the testicle for Ezra holds no weight given near emotionless reunion that was depicted for the audience.

You have to be in love with them? You can't save your family member against all odds? Geez, people are pathetic in believing that there's no such thing as found family and that everyone can only do something big for another if they are in love with someone. Sabine does love Ezra, but as established, as a sister would love her brother. But nah, it's impossible for that to be possible.

My main issue with the modern era of SW is that these LA shows don’t have the budget required to make them great. Ahsoka and Obi-Wan being the worst offender. If they put down the same amount of money that they put down for andor, these shows would’ve been at least worthy of the brand despite the writing. I’m of the opinion that all of the stuff tying into the “heir to the empire” stuff should be animated, because of this. Disney shouldn’t half ass a SW show because SW is that sci-if fantasy franchise.

Sabine giving the map to Baylan and suffering no consequences makes her a HORRIBLE person. Sabine called Hera, Zeb, Chopper, and Jacen family in Rebels as she called the whole Ghost crew family. ALL four of these are on the front line of the New Republic fleet and will be in the cross hairs of Thrawn. Mandalore (her home world that Din and Bo are trying to rebuild) is right next to Dathomir where Thrawn ended up. She KNEW that Thrawn would be released upon giving the map to Baylan. She thought Ahsoka was dead. Her best outcome at that point would be living the rest of her life on Peridia with Ezra IF she even found Ezra and he was even alive. Unless she had a tortured love of Ezra her actions make no sense. She literally sacrificed the safety of her galaxy and people she called family for the CHANCE to be WITH Ezra. She also undid Ezra's sacrifice. All this and she wasn't in love WITH Ezra? In any case, her stupidity lost the map the first time and then lost the map again. Ezra was treated as a McGuffin, and she did not even display any emotion over him. Everyone that dies due to Thrawn is partially on Sabine. Sabine was a liar, a thief, untrustworthy, unreliable, petulant, childish, unremorseful, and a general asshole. She could not even tell Ezra things he had a right to know. Ezra who is a powerful and seasoned Jedi Knight gets saved by the little shit Sabine a few times. Ezra was neutered down to a wimpy McGuffin riding bitch with Sabine. After all this shit she gets forgiven instantly by Ahsoka and sends Ezra on his way without a tear or an emotion shown. SHE GETS CALLED A JEDI AFTER ALL THIS SHIT AND SUFFERING NO CONSEQUENCES. Being called a Jedi has no meaning anymore. Her character went down by about 30 to 40 character slots in KZfaq polls. She is down by Jar Jar Binks who was mostly canned by Lucas after episode I because he was so unpopular. Ahsoka went from being in the top ten most favorite Star Wars characters in polls to about the 40th character slot.

As someone who considers Ahsoka to be one of the best Star Wars characters of all-time, I was not in the least bit excited about her own show. Turns out I was mostly right for having those expectations. I am a hardcore Star Wars fan, so right now I'm holding onto the few good shows left to invest in including season 2 of Andor, the final season of The Bad Batch (while inconsistent in quality when it hits it REALLY hits trust me) and season 2 of Tales of the Jedi. I really couldn't care less about Skeleton Crew or any of the upcoming films. I'm not sure how I feel about The Acolyte but I have low expectations for that show as well.

My problem with Star Wars right now is that everything just looks so bleak. The alien designs don’t have the uniqueness of the prequels, the visual flare is so grey, and the planets are just so basic - gone is the creativity. I love Ahsoka - she is my favourite Star Wars character! I promise if Ashley Eckstein was to return to the universe, I would watch it, I did when she returned in Tales of the Jedi, but Rosario Dawson is just so low energy. Ahsoka is and has always been light on her feet, quick and witty. Yes she matured, but she never become dull. Actually unwatchable. It’s really sad actually.

When you mine your past content and ideas instead of building something new you end up with something hollow. Excavated. With a foundation full of so many holes that you can't build anything upon it. The dependence on existing worldbuilding and stories is surely whats moving people away. Andor is a masterpiece of a television series that happens to be set in the star wars universe, creating a good story and compelling characters is so much more important than writing a star war before injecting cardboard characters to be no more than lenses for viewers to witness the events. The level of detail in the sets and characterisation in Andor did wonders for worldbuilding by showing the lives of regular people living in the galaxy far far away. It is made far more immersive and relatable not by explicitly cramming in lines of political commentary but by showing how ordinary people can become part of such an evil system without realising it along with, showing the inner workings of the empire in such a way also makes them more menacing and omnipresent than ive ever seen them portrayed in the past. Just the fact that someone getting punched in the face actually hurts them is so refreshing. Making the galaxy far far away feel like its actually out there somewhere in our universe is the best experience star wars has to offer
@toreAndreFlo19

Exactly. The answer to what will revive Star Wars, but apparently this critic is oblivious. It doesn't mean Andor in itself. But shows of originality, with their own universe within a universe, that have the confidence to develop longer, more fulfilling plots that take the time to develop unique characters. Protagonists who aren't invincible goodies, that face real stakes of life and death, and villains that have their own - sometimes complex - motivations and struggles, instead of the usual lazy stereotypes. Episodes that don't just have action for the sake of action, to the extent that it just becomes boring, but build the plot towards action so that it's much more dramatic when it kicks off. It means investing in production and creating Prestige TV. The kind of shows you watch more than once, instead of simply churning out content - content that may have interesting settings and stories - but ultimately the end product being mediocre and forgettable. It's this tolerance of mediocrity, instead of demanding the highest quality that Andor delivered, that's really killing Star Wars.

As for Sabine, I always found her annoying and not likeable. She had no flaws, was perfect at everything and they tried to make her this edgy emancipated cool girl that always acted like she was better than everyone else. She was a bigger Mary Sue than Rey and that was perfectly carried over to the Ahsoka show.

I keep asking every time someone raves about what an amazing character Baylan is, and have yet to get an answer. Why? The actor brings a sense of gravitas to his time on screen, but on the page, what is that character? Who is he? Dont know. What does he want? Something. What exactly is his relationship with Femur Hottie? Unclear. Why is he allied with the nightsisters? Ehhh.....big statue right at the end...which...will...do something? The planet he ends up on isnt Mortis, so if you insist on gifting Baylan with a motive of "eh, something to do with Father Sister and Brother?", why did he need to end up there? Theres just nothing there outside of the actor's natural screen presence.

By far, Star Wars was the biggest franchise in cinema and arguably a modern mythology. Every upcoming new movie was a huge event. Even though the prequels disliked by some, nobody can ignore that prequel trilogy had iconic moments and added so much into the SW lore that launched animations like Clone Wars and books that further explore that era. Disney treated Star Wars as a content to be exploited rather than a major franchise. Disney failed the IP at cinema, after that used it as a streaming platform advertisement and failed the IP again. Yeah we got some good ones like Rogue One and Andor, but so many bad movies and streaming shows damaged the IP so much. Star Wars doesn't feel special anymore.

My main issue with sabine giving away the only thing that can stop Thrawn from returning and unleashing a genocidal war against the galaxy is that nobody seems to care that she just risked the fate of the entire galaxy just to save one person she cares about. "just to save one person she cares about." That's not even true. When she gave the map to Baylan she thought Ahsoka was dead, and she had absolutely no reasonable expectation to do anything but have the CHANCE to see Ezra if the antagonists held up their end of the bargain. Upon seeing Ezra she seemed happy to just wind down the clock till Thrawn leaves. Ahsoka literally just arrived out of the blue. She gave up the safety of people she called family before on Rebels Hera, Zeb, Chopper, and Jacen AND the safety of the galaxy AND she was guaranteeing a new galactic war all for the chance to SEE Ezra again. Her best-case scenario she could see at that point was spending the rest of her life WITH him. With all this said she sheds no tears, she shows no romantic interest, and she sends him off without a care. She never tells Ezra what she did, and she doesn't even get a slap on the hand by Ahsoka. She doesn't breakdown emotionally after sending him off at all. She was pining over him for TEN YEARS. Her actions only make sense if she had a tortured love for Ezra but well that's not what they showed. Even then she would still be a horrible person. She suffers no consequences for her actions and gets called a Jedi. Her character ranking fell by about 40 slots and down to around Jar Jar Binks. Without Rebels her character would be down by Holdo. Filoni destroyed her as a character. Baylan also didn't make her give up the map. She did that all on her own.

I really like your point regarding shows that should have been movies. Mando was episodic from the beginning, so it works better as a show (even if some episodes admittedly wasted time) Andor is perfectly structured, with its 3 episode arcs developing individual stories while having an orerarching narrative. The various characters justified a long runtime. But with BOBF, Kenobi, and Ahsoka, its clear that the story was stretched more that necessary. They would have been better as movies or much shorter TV events. So it's not just the amount of SW content that's the problem, it's that these stories are being told through the wrong format.

Ahsoka as a character has always existed on the very cusp of greatness IMO, if it weren't for Filoni wanting his very special girl to be both his mouthpiece and the future. S7 TCW really killed any chance I'd truly love her when his negative opinions of the Jedi were spoken through her mouth over and over despite the previous six seasons of his own show demonstrating that the Jedi were unequivocally the good guys forced into an impossible situation they had no chance of winning, then blaming them for it. I'm also never getting over Ahsoka's sudden revelation that she was a child soldier in this series. That was wild, considering she was also a child diplomat and a child instructor over the course of TCW and more.

I absolutely agree about the event thing: a star wars event is about booking tickets for the premiere and showing up to a room full of nerds ready to geek it out watching the movie. Getting hyped every time a lightsaber drawn or a corny oneliner is delivered. You don't get that watching alone at home which makes you feel like the experience was underwhelming. Disney + only worked for Mangalorian season 1 because that show was a classic western set in the star wars universe. It featured very low stakes in terms of galactic peace and battle of good vs evil. The other example that worked well was Andor. That one was a masterpiece for many reasons but mainly it didn't follow the classic star wars formula of the hero's journey. That's why it worked. I don't think Disney will ever look beyond their bottom line and push for quality content as long as this model is breaking even and occasionally creating a cash cow hit

In the show, it has to be toned down and different iteration (alternate Cybertron timeline), but it showed his strategy how he nearly conquered Cybertron and almost wiped out all the Autobots in one fell swoop. Also, only a psychopath would actually believe Joel was wrong in saving Ellie...it's literally just TLOU fantards that think saving someone from a forced sacrifice to be noble.

I think in more simple terms Disney doesn't know how to handle legacy characters. They made every previous hero into a degenerate shell of their former selves. Luke's suckling off apace walruses and doesn't care, Han Solo has given up and quit, Obi-Wan is chopping meat and can't use the force or a lightsaber, and Ahsoka grew up fight a galaxy wide war for her whole life and she uses a lightsaber and the force like a 1st year padawan. The mandalorian season 2 finale had Luke like a damn raid boss and everyone loves it. The answer is RIGHT THERE!

I share your feelings towards the franchise and your analysis of the current state of the Star Wars is correct. I do think your solution doesnt quite get to the root issues though. Putting Star Wars back in theatres wont fix things or inherently make those movies good. There are terrible movies released in theatres and fantastic series released on television/streaming services. The issue is that Disney has decided to only play things safe and not tell any quality stories with interesting characters in new settings. The Mandalorian started out well because it felt fresh and different, then Disney played it safe and leaned on cameos in the latest season with no sense of narrative direction. They could put out good Star Wars shows on Disney plus if they could put create something original, which would mean new characters, which isnt safe for them.

Ya know people talk about this franchise as if a close relative recently died or their second dog has passed away. I think way too many fans expect Star Wars to be Peak Fiction or the Pinnacle of Sci-Fi. Ya know I remember the years when Disney's most failed Genre was "Science Fiction". The Original Tron, Tron Legacy, and Tommarow Land were box office failures. The Buzz Lightyear cartoon in 2000 and Meet the Robinsons were decent from what I remembered. Star Wars and Halo started to became Fandom Homework for me, the more they expanded. The entry point of getting my friends and family to experience these Space Adventures with me became a chore. During Pre-Covid 90% of my Movie Theater/Local Cinema Experience is watching Rated G Animated Movies from Disney/Pixar, Dreamworks, and the occasional MCU Movie. The thing is a lot of those movies have Happy Endings. Rouge One and Solo being the most recent Star Wars films yeah some folks I love just dismissed Star Wars as a waste of fucken time. My situation may seem childish but now that I think about it yeah even my AAA Videogames usually never have a joyful conclusion either. I can see why so many people ditch the M Rated titles and exclusively play Nintendo even when they are a 40+ years old. Normies really do not want to invest hours of time on media that ruins their escapism with crap that will bum them out. Well may the Force guide us to through these hard times my friends.

The biggest con they have pulled is convincing you that continuous output is a desireable goal. It's just product. Even the PT was dubious at best. The OT was a great little story that brought a McFukBucket of innovation to the industry and changed movies forever. I'd not begrudge the tie-in merch, they're take it or leave it, but the story was told, it was done. The PT added nothing of any merit whatsoever, (and no, not even more Palpatine. You could put Ian McDiarmid in a cloak and have him recite LinkedIn profiles and a large number of people would watch in awe) and actually removed some of the quality of the OT in doing so: how Vader fell to the Dark Side was a compelling mystery, finding out it was basically just a career option is fardookin' dumb. You say it's going to get worse before it gets better? Addict. You can make Star Wars great again by simply taking everything but the OT and junking it. Do not watch any more of the filth. Take all those hours and put them into baking. No one has ever said that Jaws needs a TV series. Or the Godfather. Or ET. Or The Third Man. No one thinks of Casablanca and dreams of franchise, that is how you best see Star Wars.

All I have to say after seeing Ahsoka is: thank goodness Andor Season 2 is still coming so we'll get some actual GOOD Star Wars again...if only for a short time. Also, Disney+ isn't the problem. It's a convenient scapegoat, but a turd is a turd no matter how it's presented. The problem is with the creative powers-that-be at Lucasfilm, including Kathleen Kennedy. Honestly, that whole group needs a gutting-out. Send Kathleen packing, because her epic botching of the last Indiana Jones movie was the last straw for me, and it's clear to me now she no longer gets it. I don't care what successes she's had in the past; it's time for her to go. Get the uber-fanboys like Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau out of there too, because all they're doing is pandering to people who can't see past their favorite SW action figures and only want the ham-fisted legacy cameos and references. We need creative, intelligent, open-minded people who care about Star Wars, but aren't going to kiss fanboy ass while creating it, or think so far outside the box that they lose their way. And, OH MY GOOD GOD, did you ever hit the nail on the head about Thrawn. Nothing he did in Ahsoka made him seem like anything more than a B-grade Bond villain, and not even one of the unintentionally entertaining ones. He's supposed to be this cunning strategist, but he kept making rookie mistakes and only escaped because he had a head start. A misplaced, over-inflated self-confidence and a markedly calm demeanor doesn't make you a great villain.

You sir are absolutely correct about everything. We need more talented people that treat SW not as a money printing machine but as a toolbox full of potential to create really deep and thought provoking stories. Mando worked because it was a completely new character on an unseen time period with its own motifs and style and it stopped working when they used it as a Trojan horse to reintroduce legacy characters to kickstart a new “cinematic universe” Andor worked because it’s a perfect thriller story of corporate espionage before being a Star Wars product.
