Out of all of the proposed benefits from taking vitamin K2, there’s one that has the strongest evidence and is the reason why I personally take 90mcg of vitamin K2. But a tantalizing new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology suggests that there might be an addition benefit from taking vitamin K2.

I'm from NZ. I notice your MicroVitamin product is missing one critical mineral lacking in NZ soil- Boron. This mineral seems to pass under the radar. It shouldn't given the amazing benefits it has, especially for us NZers. Re MK7 . Much of the original research used MK4. Just because MK7 lasts longer doesn't mean it's better. It's like people who use molecular hydrogen , either in water or inhaled. This gas leaves the body in under a minute if I remember correctly. Yet in that time it switches on a number of bodily processes before leaving..

Why are you taking offence to someone asking a genuine question? If you post a video to a audience and especially if you're a doctor you should absolutely expect some questions. The idea that he just shouldn't have to deal with questions, as if he's above that and shouldn't be burdoned by the little people, is such a bizarre idea. Notice that the doctor himself posted a calm response quickly answering the question. He had no issue with it so why do you?

@garzascreek

@ThierryPianoSolo - Yes, almost all the MK-7 studies are sponsored by one of the 2 large MK-7 manufacturers. The MK-7 manufacturer sponsored research seems always careful to not directly compare with MK-4 (no non-inferiority trials). If they did we would discover that MK-7 is not found in the brain or the saliva, MK-4 is and it is neuroprotective. MK-7 does not cross the placenta and is not at significant amounts in breast milk. MK-4 is carried by HDL (which accounts for its more rapid clearing), whereas MK-7 is carried by VLDL (which causes it to linger in the blood instead of being picked up by the tissues). MK-4 is the body's preferred form from the time of the origin of the human species. The real problem is that well-heeled marketing and patent collection oriented companies like NattoPharma use research funds as a means of marketing their specific products via carefully structured and relentless research programs. The end user requires much diligence to wade through it all and discern actual value. And as always, follow the money...

K2-4 is the form the body uses, but only lasts about 4 hours in the body. So you are best to get it threw food during the day. K2-7 lasts 24 hour but needs conversation. Which is why it is better as a supplement. I have had 2 bone density scans. A baseline one at age 51. Went low carb a few years later. Started eating real food like meat, eggs and cheese. Had another bone density at age 56. It had increased. Did not start take K2-7 until I was 59. But moved to a province that starts at age 65, but well behind. So not sure when I will get another. Took a fall down the ramp at age 62. Black ice and I was carrying things. Suddenly facing straight up on my back. Not even a bruise.

In the summer of 2018 i started to take a pretty high dose of K2, with NO additional D3. I did this for about 5 or 6 weeks. I was then 58 years old. After a few months I noticed I was feeling a little weaker. By Christmas I felt exhausted. I was finding it difficult to turn over in bed. I started to sleep badly. Then I began to stay downstairs as it was a strain and tiring to walk up them. I saw a Dr in February and he sent me for a scan which found nothing. By March I had a much reduced appetite and was starting to find it hard to swallow. The Dr thought I had a problem with my appetite and prescribed vit d3 and fortified drinks. Gradually i could not straighten up and stand tall and it was hard to lift my head. I was admitted to hospital in April 2019, and spent 10 weeks there. Most of it in ICU, on pressurised oxygen, i was intubated, and put on a feeding tube. I could not swallow and my voice was also lost. I had pneumonia twice. Via a muscle biopsy I was diagnosed with poly myositis. I needed IV steroids, antibiotics and IV immunoglobulin therapy. I then needed speech and language physiotherapy and more help to get me walking again. I was given more steroids and immune suppressants. I would recommend to anyone that wants to take k2 to please keep up a high level of D3, as they work synergistically. I had taken nothing else that would send my D3 level into a downward spiral. It is potentially extremely dangerous to take K2 alone. Thank you.

Why do researchers don't give a complete combination of vitamins and minerals which work together? They should know that vitamin K2 activates the vitamin K Dependent proteins which have been created by vitamin D. Or rsther, would have been created if they gave enough of vitamin D3. 25 ug (1000 IU) doesn’t do much. Somewhere between 5000 and 10000 IU during a couple of months would give optimal levels for most people. And furthermore, most people are deficient in magnesium, which is needed for vitamin D to work, and is important for bones too. They also equates bone density with bone quality. That's not really true. Vitamin D3 and K2 remodels bone. It doesn’t just add minerals to them, Why would the body build bones when it hasn't got all the ingredients it need for that? That would be weak bones, and the body probably avoid building those! It wouldn't hurt to supplement with collagen and boron either, if they really cared for bone health. This tendency researchers have to give just one thing makes it hard to show effects when several things work together. It requires large groups to compensate for the missing ingerediens in the general population. If they wanted real results, they would supply all the ingredients, with the one they researched in three different doses. And meassure the level they got, because some people actually get enough of it from food and not from the researchers.

Many of the studies are designed to fail.. accidentally on purpose. Many of them don’t have the goal to find the answers, they’re designed to demonstrate that these vitamins and minerals don’t perform well and therefore taking synthetic medicines is a better option. Just have a look at the amount of studies that use super low dosages for Vitamin C, like 1000mg and then concluding that it doesn’t work. with vitamin K too, 100mcg is low, 300mcg seem to be a better dosage to get the most of it, yet we’re still see 50-100mcg studies.

@larsnystrom6698

It doesn't matter. Vitamin D doesn't acts very slowly, increasing the calcium uptake after a week or so. It also creates a number of vitamin K dependent proteins, which obviously needs K2 to be activated. It won't do much difference if you take them together or very far apart. Some people with low calcium levels might wait a week after starting vith D3, before taking K2. And increase the K2 slowly. The reason for this is that K2 makes calcium go into the bones, and if they were already taking calcium from the bones it might get to low in the blood. It takes some time for D3 to increase the bodys calcium uptake. Calcium levels has to be very stable. You want to give the body time to adjust to changes.

I hv taken k2 mk7 with d3 for 4 years, dosage 200- 300 micro gram k2mk7 + 3000- 5000 iu d3 it does reduce my swollen shouder, perhaps due to calcium build up. But the effects are minor in comparison to taking much higher dosages of k2 mk4, i started taking 5 mg in jul 2023, and moved up in 2 months to 20 mg a day. It removed the deep pains in my neck and my arms joints, as well as the stiffness in my whole upper body when I have to lie down on my stomach. I believe k2 mk4 is much more effective. The 4 hours half life cud means that our body absorbed it much more effectively, and cus used it right away. I cud feel the effects almost daily, that all my body pains just fades a way on daily basis. Eventually I will moved yp to 45 mg a day for few weeks to few months, depending on how I feel. That I might reduce it to 5 to 10 mg daily untill new research findings. The only reason I slowly increasing the dosages is to avoid whatever calcium in my arteries from reducing to fast, and melting into pieces, such that some cud flow to my heart.

The next time all the camels died again even though the water was increased by 100% to 4 cups. Therefore, it must be concluded that water has no effect on the death rate of camels in the desert. I would like to hear clarification on why MK7 is preferred over MK4. One source implied that MK7 is preferred because it seems to stay in the blood longer. Yet, it seems to have been shown that all forms of vitamin K convert to MK4 and that the body takes MK4 up faster. This would imply that the body prefers MK4. This was said to be shown by a recent study, but I'm not involved on checking the source documents for this kind of thing.
@larsnystrom6698
@larsnystrom6698 4 ай бұрын
We would all want to know that, but that research hasn't been done. No one knows the minimum effective dose of MK4. Almost all research has been made with very large doses (15 mg three times a day) because it disappears fast from the serum into the cells. What's not mentioned is that it's not constantly needed in the blood. After activation of the vitamin K dependent proteins, it probable doesn't do much until more of those are made. There's some indication that 1.5 mg of MK4 is effective, but we aren't sure. I supplement with a mixture of K1, MK4, and MK7. I'm simply guessing that much of the effect is from K1 and MK7 being converted into MK4, which certainly has to be effective. Such conversions, though, are probably not giving optimal levels of MK4, so I want some more of that. I'm guessing there might be some triage effect with MK4. My current supplementation level is about 2 mg totally of vitamin K. About 200 ug MK7, the rest equal parts K1 and MK4. This isn't much, and K has no known toxicity. I regard it as the minimum level which might be optimal, but we don't really know the optimal level of these.

Hey man! Thanks for the nice reply! Rare on the internet. I also found out later that the sources of pure MK4 are expensive and cost effective ones might not be very high quality. That would turn the question back to MK7 as being the safer bet. But, yeah, I would really like to see what future research has to say about this. By the way, l also take a combined K sup that has a bit of all the forms. When the research is still scarce, maybe that's the safer bet? Cheers!@@larsnystrom6698

I'm not a doctor but I'm a researcher, so ask your doctor just in case. Only old generation blood thinners like warfarin require avoiding vitamin K1 supplements because they work by inhibiting vitamin K1-dependent coagulation so you're literally sabotaging the effect of the drug. However, this is only true for K1 not K2, and only for old anticoagulants that work this way. Eliquis works differently and has nothing to do with vitamin K. It targets coagulation factor Xa instead. There's zero scientific evidence to suggest K2 would be any issue with Eliquis, but keep in mind many doctors just don't know the nuance and would recommend to avoid all forms of K entirely just in case.

The blood thinner you think about is waran, it works by blocking the effect of vitamin K1, which is necessary for blood clotting. Vitamin K2 has no effect on blood clotting. It doesn't affect blood circulation at all, except by avoiding calcification. You take blood thinners on doctors prescription to avoid blood clotting. Waran is actually a rat poison, which in high doses makes them bleed to death. It wouldn't hurt if doctors prescr8bed vitamin K2 to avoid calcification of the arteries together with waran. But the don't! Most of them would think it affected the blood thinner, which it doesn't. Blood thinners, Waran, is a medication. To avoid needing that, there are two things one can do. Take a baby-aspirin or nattokinase (10000 FU or so) or both. Of these, I prefer nattokinase. But notice that the 2000 FU they usually come with hasn't been shown to do anything.

How does nattokinase compare with vitamin k supplements?

They have rather different effects. I assume you are thinking of arteriosclerosis. Vitamin K2 slows down deposit of calcium in the arteries. But so far it hasn't been shown to reduce it. We need it for the body to handle calcium the r8ght way. Nattokinase dissolves plack buildup in a natural way. It has been shown to be effective at 10800 FU, but not at 2800 FU, I think it was. Taking nattokinase is pretty much like taking a baby aspirin for precaution. But it hasn't yet so much research behind it. But what it has seems good. Nattokinase actually dissolve blodclottings, and reduces artherosclerosis. K2 and nattokinase are both doing something good in very different way, So I take both of them.

Vitamin K2 mk4 is far more beneficial then mk7. The Superiority of MK-4 over MK-7 Only MK-4 is the only K2 in the brain. MK-7 is absent in the brain. MK-4 manages inflammation in the brain. MK-7 does not. MK-4 has the highest concentration in human tissues. MK-9, MK-8 and MK-7 in that order, are in tissues. So you could say that MK-7 is the 4th most important K2. MK-4 crosses the placenta. For pregnant women this is important for the health of the fetus. MK-7 does not pass to the fetus. Human breast milk contains MK-4. It does not contain MK-7. MK-4 protects against over a dozen different cancers. MK-7 has no anti-cancer benefit. MK-4 prevents calcium buildup in the arteries "better" than MK-7. MK-4 protects against cirrhosis of the liver. MK-7 does not. MK-4 protects against Alzheimer's disease. MK-7 does not. MK-4 protects against Parkinson’s disease. MK-7 does not. Promotes healthy platelet, white and red blood cell production in people with leukemias. MK-7 does not The "trans" form of MK-7 is the only beneficial isomer. In "food," such as Natto, MK-7 is 100% in the trans form. In MK-7 "supplements," the majority of the supplement are "not" in the pure trans form. The trans form of MK-7 is the only active form of menaquinone able to act as a cofactor for carboxylation. The majority of MK-7 supplements also have the "CIS" form. The CIS form is 100% useless and does not act as a cofactor for carboxylation. In the majority of MK-7 tested, despite claims of being mostly in the trans form, the independent testing showed they were not. They were in the CIS form. The CIS form has an "unknown toxicity profile." (is it any wonder why so many have side effects?) Some manufacturers are dishonest in their "trans" claims. The CIS form can be there "from the start" in MK-7 supplements. The CIS form can also "convert" from the "trans" form over time and by "oxidation." Which means, over time, MK-7 supplements become more "CIS like." Most manufacturers of MK-7 use "cheap processing" to make this, and that is why there is a large issue with "impurity" with the supplements. As this does not impact MK-7 "from food." It is 100% in the trans form. You will not have the issue with potential toxicity with food, BUT if you are sensitive to soy, you can still have side effects from food in the trans form, as "soy" is a stimulant. When it comes to "MK-4" supplements, the supplement form is "bio-identical" to what is in food. There is no issues in terms of impurity or toxicity or getting "something different" in the supplement form compared to what is in food. In Japan, where they are one of the largest consumers of "natto," they only recommend "MK-4" as a supplement for the treatment of osteoporosis, and have been doing so since 1995.

It’s too much to get into via KZfaq comment section. The impact between k2 supplementation and high haemoglobin and haematocrit levels isn’t straightforward. But If you have high levels of haemoglobin and haematocrit, it’s better to be safe than sorry about taking Vitamin K2 - go talk to your GP first to make sure it's safe for you personally taking into account underlying factors etc
