Interesting video, seems like the UK could learn a lot from Australia. As far as I'm aware our entire sewage infrastructure is based on a combined system. This means that every time it rains heavily, untreated sewage gets discharged into our rivers and beaches. Sadly occurrences like this have become the norm rather than the exception. It's so bad that charities such as 'surfers against sewage' exist to raise awareness of the issue as well as publishing data of recent discharges which has most likely been captured using similar tech to what you demonstrated here.

Great video. Out of professional curiosity: Do you Aussies have a separate sewer system for storm water like the US or is it a mixed system that collects rainwater and sewage like we have in southern Germany?

Thanks mate. We do seperate our stormwater and sewer. Not sure how you would contain the flow when both are connected. Plus it would not help with the Treatment Plant process

@@thinklist When we build new housing areas in the south-west of Germany now we also have a separate sewer system. The north and the east of Germany traditionally have this kind of system too. But in Germany the majority of sewers are mixed sewers that collect stormwater and sewage in one sewer because they were thought to be easier to install and maintain. The treatment plants are usually calculated to handle double the flow that occurs when there is no rain. It is protected by a valve that reduces the flow to the hydraulic capacity. Our sewage system has a lot of overflow basins and overflows fitted with valves. The basins serve as a buffer. They fill up when heavy rain starts and thereby capture the most polluted water with oil, dust, and other sediments. When the rain decreases or stops that pollution is send to the treatment plant. If the basin is full the now very diluted water overflows in our rivers and streams. We use hydraulic models to minimize the amount of diluted sewage by maximizing the amount of pollutants and water retained in the system. By decree all basins are now fitted with sensors to document the frequency and time they are filled/overflowing. With this date we will then be able to check the accuracy of the computer models, monitor for problems and further increase the efficiency of the wastewater system. Greetings from a wastewater engineer. I'm hired by the government to monitor and help the operating organizations to fulfill the regulations so our waterways are clean and healthy ecosystems.

@@domib2896 so great to chat with you. That is super interesting. I supposed in nice sense having join storm water and sewer does make it much simpler. The issue we have is illegal storm water connections into the sewer. Sometimes it feels like the system might as well be joined together.

BRO! This is a PHENOMENAL video! maybe I missed the answer in the video. Is the battery only backup? If not how long does it last. You said it is communicating with a database - cellular 3g or 4g or something else?

Thanks mate 🤙 nope the battery is the primary and this one uses 3G but will be upgraded shortly to 4G as the 3G in AUS is to be turned off. Some also use sigfox and other low band technologies
