let's talk about... BUSINESS. Some more notes: DTC businesses are notoriously hard to make work, and credit is due with these guys because it does seem like they do have some successful items. But I personally have a problem with this business model of affiliate link based serial product importing/reselling on Amazon as it feels somewhat disingenuous... AND to sell a course promoting it as a successful and attainable business venture just kinda... seems bad, man.

Further reading... part 2? If you want to learn a little more about what I'm referring to with "Get Rich Quick Schemes" I would check out this video by Tom Nicholas that really gets deep into the subject kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aMihZraVy-DHcWg.htmlsi=kYxSDcGgvaKY0Xzv

I just remember the UPROAR from the online knitting community when these 'bros' came right out and mansplained what knitters need to actual knitters It was so lmao and I actually can't believe they are still trying to make this a feasible business? Love you and your channel! Thanks for this content X Ros X

Feels a little like they went "What's a community that doesn't understand the internet" and assumed that was knitters since to non-crafters it seems like a very offline activity. They probably thought they could prey on people who don't know any better. Also lol Craftsy is right there

At this point, what community isn't on the internet, anyway? Facebook exists and even the most niche of communities has a group there.

Had to peek at the website, and, assuming the bros are still owning it, with part of their welcoming message being "If you’ve never touched a pair of knitting needles, you’re in the right place!" at least they know where they're at. Loved the video! Perfect to embroider along to.

i looooove this kind of content you're putting out!! feels so much more like an elevated kind of knit and chat, much more like an actual podcast rather than what knitting youtube has deemed to be a podcast. and it's great to hear your takes on this stuff because you're knowledgeable as well. it feels SMART and informative and it's not just like "here's what you should buy". i would be super interested in more of this, and more like.....knitting world news i guess and your take on it. like i know this specific topic was not super breaking news and i did hear about it when it was happening in 2022, but coming back to it now to give your take on it after more has happened is very interesting and makes it feel fresh.

Great video, I really like your approach and style. I think these guys were beyond arrogant, and maybe, just maybe, 🙄 their arrogance was underpinned by a little sexism and ageism (In their arrogance they assumed would be knitters are not too bright and quite naive, while experienced knitters are little old ladies who are also naive and not too bright.) 🤔 I find their arrogance breathtaking.

omg those amazon bamboo-plastic cord circular needles. Terrible, but at least I know which sizes i want to use now. And now I never buy supplies off amazon because i know better options. The drop shipping might get a few newbie sales but probably no return customers.

Yes exactly- it’s absolutely not a bad place to start but people move on pretty quickly from no brand options on amazon once they get into the hobby more!

I'm half way through this video and the take I have so far is if they had launched this venture in the early to mid 2010s they probably would have had more success. I would be interested to know how people get into crafting these days but having blogs only feels outdated. What I do see from a bunch of content creators who have evolved is the mix of website, social media (TikTok/Instagram) and KZfaq. The thing I take issue most with these types of ventures is the "get rich quick" quality about it. When it comes to crafting I'm more likely to listen to/follow along with someone who has passion for what they're doing not necessarily looking at it from a lens of "how much money can I get"

First of all, I think you're hilarious, but that might be because we have very similar senses of humor.😅 Second of all, am I the only one who remembers when Hobbii first hit the scene? I remember seeing their ads on social media, going to their site, and then going to fiber arts groups on Facebook to see what people are saying. And people weren't saying much. I didn't purchase from them until Toni from TL Yarn Crafts made her first video because then I knew I could trust them. And I know I wasn't the only one. Even now, I'm still seeing so many posts online that are like, "is Hobbii legit?" The fiber arts community (and really any niche hobby community) knows what it likes. If a company wants to break into that community, it has to gain our trust. People aren't stupid. And companies that treat their customers as idiots generally don't last very long.

That was really interesting. I think, as you pointed out, it was telling that they didn’t have a handle on the potential market just by the name they picked. My LYS is called Fibre. She gets it!

I got into knitting when I started to date my now-spouse and wanted to make them something personal for their birthday that had a lot of heart put into it. I decided to make a scarf and teach myself how to knit using online resources. That was a few years ago and I still use gifting as a way to motivate myself to learn new techniques and try new patterns. This is my first video of yours that I’ve watched and I’m really enjoying your knit and chat format.

I suspect they went into this believing the usual stereotype about knitting: it's 95% done by middle aged and older women -- anyone other than a woman over 50 is such a minority they're not worth targeting. And there's only a few things that are ever hand knit by hobbyists: hats, scarves, baby clothes, maybe an occasional ugly sweater or potholder. From that followed their second major mistake: yarn is one thing that you buy in different colors. They MIGHT have known about weights, since they took a selfie in a yarn aisle, but I doubt they knew how many there are or what materials are available, let alone how they're used. They also 100% do not know about other yarn crafts.

I really enjoyed listening to you talk about this! I actually hadn't heard about this because I started knitting around a year ago. It reminded me of the issues with Zara because they both had such a poor understanding of the knitting community and what it values. I would imagine these sorts of cash grab schemes also target other niche communities, but it's really sad to see it happen 🫤
