Best IMAX feature film presentation I've ever seen. If more people will choose IMAX over traditional screens where available in the near future, we can probably thank this film for it.

Tbh I'd credit Oppenheimer, we wouldn't even have a 70mm release of Dune 2 or re-release of Tenet without that (Denis said as much himself)

Dune is an absolute must see in IMAX!! I’ve been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do some work with IMAX & the 1.90:1 format that all but of a handful of cinemas use is not the true / classic IMAX format. IMAX fan tech break down….. The aspect ratio of true IMAX is 1.43:1, nearly square in format, which is unique and differs from standard cinema formats. This shape and size enable directors to use the space creatively and in a way that cannot be replicated in a regular theatre or home viewing context. It also allows films shot in the IMAX format to be displayed with significantly higher resolution than standard projection systems. True IMAX theatres have a distinctive screen that extends to the edges of your peripheral vision, creating an immersive experience unlike any other. The seating arrangement is steep to ensure that all viewers have an unobstructed view of the screen. These screens can reach a size of up to 72 feet high and 98 feet wide, which is almost like watching a film on the side of a seven-story building. The classic or ‘True IMAX’ also uses a 70mm film format, the largest in practical use. With IMAX format, each frame is 15 perforations wide, and the area of the frame is about 52mm high by 70mm wide - almost 9 times larger than the conventional 35mm frame used in traditional movie theaters. This full frame IMAX format produces images up to 18k resolution, far superior to the images seen in most digital cinemas. On the other hand, Digital IMAX, or what some have taken to calling ‘Fake IMAX,’ was introduced as a more cost-effective alternative to the traditional 70mm projection system. These theatres use two 2K resolution digital projectors with proprietary IMAX post-production techniques to enhance the image quality. The screens are smaller, typically 28 feet high and 58 feet wide, which is much smaller than a True IMAX screen but still larger than a standard theatre screen. The aspect ratio of Digital IMAX is 1.90:1, which, while it offers more height than standard theatres, does not quite match up to the traditional IMAX ratio. Digital IMAX systems also utilize a different sound system and can offer a great auditory experience but fall short of True IMAX’s patented sound technology which delivers laser-aligned digital sound. Digital IMAX theatres were introduced primarily due to the lower installation and operation costs compared to True IMAX. They can fit into traditional multiplex theatres without major structural modifications, making them an attractive option for many theatre owners. While they don’t deliver the same level of immersion as True IMAX, they still provide a superior viewing experience compared to regular screens, making it a ‘better than standard’ option for many viewers. Here in the UK we have only three ‘True IMAX’ screens with the correct 1.43:1 format; those being The National Media Museum in Bradford (interestingly the first IMAX location in the UK when it opened in the 1980s), The Printworks in Manchester & finally The Science Museum in London. Even the British Film Institute doesn’t run the true IMAX format screen!! I totally agree that IMAX is massively underused. But if we were to see it more broadly adopted by the film industry, cinemas must be clear about whether they are IMAX or Lie-MAX.

There was so much to take in, I was overwhelmed with the first viewing but the second was much more chill and I appreciated the story much more cos I wasn’t as immersed and just enjoying the next awesome part

I watched in IMAX. Went and told my parents to watch it in IMAX. My mom was against it because she tried IMAX for the first time with Aquaman and the movie was awful apparently so she didn't want to waste any more money. In the end I told her, get dressed, and I'm paying for your IMAX. So yeah, the worm riding scene melted my mind a second time and my parents loved it. "It was worth it."

@davidanderson1639

@@aliofly To fill a 1.43:1 screen with a full-frame digital image a dual laser-based projector is needed, and the BFI’s 2K Xenon lamp-based digital projector is only capable of showing them in 1.90:1, robbing them of their full impact. Having seen films with IMAX 1.43:1 scenes I can vouch for the impact they have, and as laser projectors have been around for several years, the inability of the BFI to project digital 1.43:1 was a real blot on its claims to be the UK’s premier film location. With Odeon in charge of the ticketing at the BFI for the last few years, it seemed unlikely that this would change but since the BFI has taken back control, (to coin a phrase), rumors were about that the BFI IMAX would finally get its laser projector - and in late September 2022 it was finally announced that this would be the case - and alongside this would be an all-new screen, and a 12-channel IMAX sound system - an upgrade from the six-channel. However, there was good news, and bad. The good is that the 15/70mm film projector would be retained, but the bad news is that rather than a dual-laser system, the BFI confirmed on Instagram that it would be a commercial laser (CoLa) - which means that even after all these years of waiting - visitors would not be able to see IMAX 1.43:1 films digitally. There is another hope for Londoners and those in the vicinity, This is the London Science Museum, which does indeed have both dual-laser and 15/70mm projectors in its booth. The problem here is that, the Science Museum only shows IMAX documentaries; some of the older ones are on 15/70mm film.

For alternative point of view: DO NOT watch this film, or any film, in IMAX. IMAX promotes a two-tier (three-tier, actually) aspect ratio system: They exclusively show the film in an aspect ratio that other cinemas aren't allowed to show. Not "Unable to" but "Not allowed to". This could be seen as ridiculous: It is the gatekeeping of art. And, don't forget, IMAX screens often can't even agree amongst themselves on which AR to use, i.e. some go for 1.43:1, others 1.90:1. Also, if you watch Dune Part 2 on a 1.43:1 IMAX screen it will be shown in 1.90:1 UNMASKED, i.e. a very sub-standard theatrical experience, particularly visually unpleasant with darker films such as Dune. So, if you insist on going with the crowd and watching it in IMAX, then see it on a "Liemax" screen, not one of the huge ones like the one in Waterloo. Awful format, avoid it!

Here's an analogy: A new cinema format appears, let's call it MegaMax. MegaMax shows some films in color but, thanks to MegaMax's business deals with the film studios, every other cinema has to show them in black & white. Would you praise MegaMax, proclaiming, "This is the best way to see the movie! The color is so immersive, etc."? Or, would you say that this is an appalling anti-artistic business model? For me, the latter is the correct answer. And yet everyone's effectively doing the former with IMAX. On the plus side, at least Dune 2 eschews that silly IMAX gimmick of Variable Aspect Ratio.

I saw it at this screen, the Leicester Square IMAX, on Sunday night and the image was a little dark. Great experience and amazing film, but a little bit disappointed at that. Some of the darker scenes lost a bit of detail because of it. Nothing too distracting, but not ideal and hopefully an easy fix.

Dune is an absolute must see in IMAX!! I’ve been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do some work with IMAX & the 1.90:1 format is not the true / classic IMAX format.

IMAX has a mottled effect on the screen canvas which is very distracting and ruins the picture, or maybe that was just the screen I saw it on (cineworld Cheltenham)? Sound was amazing though.

Yes! I saw the last Mission Impossible film at the Cheltenham IMAX and, exactly as you say, the screen looked like a piece of parchment paper. Incredibly distracting, especially on light-coloured expansive views like the sky. I wrote to them, and IMAX to complain, but got no response. The Odeon cinema in Bath has the same problem with some of its screens. I won't go to either venue again..!

More IMAX screens need to be constructed large enough to project in the intended aspect ratio and with 65mm and 70mm film capabilities. I saw Dune: Part Two on a great AMC IMAX screen with dual 4k laser projection and amazing sound and bass. The auditorium was stadium seating with recliners and plenty of foot room in the aisles and plastic walls behind each row so that the people sitting in the aisles directly in front of you are hidden, so no shit head pulling out their iPhone during the movie can ruin it for you by seeing the damn light on the phone. All of that is A+ great. BUT, it's still AMC IMAX, which is still not technically true IMAX. It was still a great experience, and I went into the film with high enough expectations that I was almost destined to be disappointed by it. But it still absolutely lived up to and even exceeded the hype. I'm going back to see it a second time on the same IMAX screen tomorrow. But I wish that there was a true 70MM IMAX screen closer than a 20 hour drive from where I live. Dear IMAX, let's make that possible for me and others, for the good of Cinema!

Yeah well, about the popcorn. I watched it in Imax yesterday (in Birmingham) and even the majestic soundtrack couldn't drown out the sound of the guy a few seats away scrabbling and munching his way through a bucket of the stuff for the first hour. Deeply irritating noise. If there's one thing that keeps me away from the cinema it's the fucking popcorn. Sell quiet food!

IMAX is a rip off. Too expensive, too far away. And you have to book months in advance. I saw Avatar in imax and I didn’t see anything worth all that money and time. As I was watching the movie, I spent so much time wondering if it was really better than traditional screen. I couldn’t really even tell it was bigger. Hell, sitting up close in a traditional screen going to feel bigger than an IMAX screen sitting at the back.
