I use a 2" piece of PVC pipe over the bar collar. Then the band goes on the peg, over the bar, then back to the peg. The piece of PVC does two things. It protects the bands, and it rotates so the tension is even on both sides. The weights then go in the outside of the PVC.

i made some of the best strength gains of my life when i added "lighter" bands to every exercise I could just to overload the portions of the movement where i was strongest. I actually learned about that from Dr. Squat Hatfield years ago and it works great. I mostly just used the black bands in addition to my normal weight in plates.

One of the things that I like to do with my bands is dangle dumbbells from either a partially loaded or totally unloaded barbell and then do bench near the end of my workout. In my experience, this really forces your shoulder to stay tight and enhances stability.

Yo! love seeing the spray foam in the background! I sell spray foam for a living. Pro tip: make sure you paint that foam to preserve the life span! The only thing that breaks down foam is UV light. after some years of UV exposure, eventually it will break down, become brittle and start to disintegrate which will make a mess and make it useless. On topic: I just used a bench band for the first time yesterday. Came here to learn more so thanks for the info! I def gotta get one of these bands you recommend this week!

Hey Brian, Just a quick question. Do you have a particular method for altering the band tension based on the athlete's strength level? For example even though I'm much weaker than you should I use a similar amount of band tension? If not do you have a method to work out the appropriate amount or just wing it?

If you're doing more of"traditional" powerlifting style programming that doesn't have dynamic effort days so to speak, where these are easier to plug in, where would you tend to employ band work? Would you just treat it as a variation and utilize it through a whole cycle ? I'm thinking add "heavy" band work the last few weeks of a strength block and maybe light band work during a hypertrophy block?

Hi Bryan I have a question. I am 17 years old and I have been working out in a gym for about 1 year. I really enjoy it and find it REALLY fun to do. I want to do this for as long as I can, just like you and juji. But beeing over excited I have picked up exercises like the deadlift that are not optimal for my age due to my bones still developing, according a great physical therapist I know. Doing dealifts and heavy squats, I have had minor injuries on my back and knees and adductors, or inner quads I don't think I spelled that right 😂. I have really bad knees like my father has. What do you think I should do about my training?? Focus on bodybuilding principles until I am older and then do powerlifting stuff, which I love, or just keep doing athletic stuff or calisthenics even until I grow stronger. I could really use your advice!! Thanks a lot and keep up with the great content!

Not Bryan but I doubt it’s an issue with the exercises? I’m 16 and doing deadlifts and squats is fine for me. It sounds like you had joint issues from either overloading the weight or using improper form, I’d reevaluate both of those.

If you're just a novice lifter (I'm 42 million years old, 6'4" tall and 230lbs body weight and deadlifting 320lbs 8 working sets of 3 as of yesterday).. I guess what I'm asking is should a novice lifter, such as your truly, use bands every now and then or is this more for an intermediate lifter? If a novice lifter were to do this how would you assess what weight would you use if you were 42 million years old like me? Would you just recommend starting with my working weight and adding a small (light) band or reducing below my working weight and using a thicker band or.. ?? The only thing I've really used bands for are for things like monster walks.

Because you were working a certain range of motion on the lift. So you can throw more intensity to the top part of the lift with reverse bands while the bottom of the lift is assisted. You can also help for situations where you are treating around an injury or are lowering the range of motion for several nervous system purposes

I'm planning on joining the AF, but my struggle is to make weight. I'm 30, 5' 9" and weigh 227 as of this morning. I naturally carry a lot of muscle (and fat) so my biggest hurdle is making weight (186 lbs... blegh). I can run a 13:15 mile and a half pretty easy, do 40 pushups in a minute and sit ups are cake.
