Linux can do that too at times as well. Just not intentionally. E.g. Linux Mint Update Manager recently had a bug that enabled automatic updates without user's doing anything. And so their apt packages started to update without the user's knowledge. Accidents happen, and it was fixed within the same day. I'm just highlighting this because its dangerous to just blanket statement say "This doesn't happen on Linux". I've not used Windows for a good while and agree with this video, but we still need to be careful and aware about what is going on with Linux, rather than just blindly trusting everything.

@@Nikolai508 A bug is not the same as a deliberate action to steal personal data or intrude on privacy - and, with respect, how is a bug that forces automatic updates going to affect someone's privacy anyway? Sure, it may break the system in some cases, but it is not the same thing.

I am no fan of Microsoft, I rid myself of my Microsoft abuser when support for Windows 7 ended and no longer allow their crappy products into my home or life. But in what way have they "held back the industry"? I would argue that their "marketing speak" and lies about Windows did ultimately get PCs into every home. @@terrydaktyllus1320 Look up the Microsoft antitrust cases. Time and time again they used underhanded tactics to retain their monopoly, and not have to compete based on technical merit. Without MS, open file formats would have flourished in the 90s and yet that's still an ongoing struggle, competing OSes (not just Linux, but OS/2, BeOS, even AmigaOS and MacOS) may have thrived, and JavaScript in 2000 would have had a chance to advance already to where we are today. The type of underhanded tactics used were particularly nefarious, but often too technical to be understood by most people, like having two sets of APIs for Windows, the public one, which would change behaviour between releases, and the private stable one that was used by its own products, like Office. For example, they made deals with hardware retailers making it impossible to buy a PC without also paying MS for software you weren't even going to use.

I was also a big Amiga user back in the day too and used it to connect to the first BBSes and even used an A1200 running iBrowse back around 1993 on dial-up Internet. I've used and deployed Microsoft products from MS-DOS through to Windows 7 when I finally rid myself of their rubbish. I started using Linux back in 1997 now, Gentoo Linux is my main OS at home and I've built, administered and hardened Red Hat Linux telecoms servers for the past 2O years. Now we've established my credentials, let's look at some computing history. Yes, it looked as though at one point that Commodore and Atari might have seized control of the home computer market but there was two much in-fighting between the two companies (Jack Tramiel) and whilst Commodore had brilliant hardware engineers working for them, they had terrible sales and marketing people - that was despite Microsoft and, quite frankly, neither company knew what it wanted to be anyway. Had Bill Gates existed without Microsoft, maybe he'd have just moved in to head Commodore and turned them into the "next Microsoft" anyway, it was the Commodore leadership that made them fail. In the absence of Gates, in all likelihood, the next successors to the "home computer throne" might have been IBM with OS/2 because by not having to "jump into bed" with Microsoft by putting DOS and Windows on all PCs they sold, then OS/2 may have come to the forefront as the next consumer OS. Yes, it was advanced for what is was but Microsoft came out with Windows NT anyway that occupied the business IT server space for decades anyway, until most of it went Cloud. OS/2 was seen as vastly superior to MS-DOS and early Windows but NT was clearly seen as at least its equal in its early days. I don't see that a rise of OS/2 would have been any different in terms of "one OS monopoly" and therefore Linux would have probably happened anyway. In other words, IBM would probably have filled any vacuum created by the non-existence of Microsoft - back then, IBM was a big and lumbering computer giant, Microsoft was a lot more "quick and nimble", I think computing would have fallen behind where they are today had IBM been at the helm. Once again, let me be clear on this - this in no way is a defence of Microsoft on my part, this is purely an investigation of where things might have been in their absence. And I still think you're wrong - we wouldn't be as advanced as we are today without Microsoft, much as I hate to admit it.

@@pdr. I agree with most of that, except the bit about JS. It was great when it was first created and every little graft of new limbs of functionality have made it a worse language. In its current form, it should be scrapped and what replaces it should be designed from scratch for the purposes JS has been used for but better. It is my pet peeve, it is a pipe dream, but I will continue to push for it no matter the obstacles.

Windows: You pay A LOT, and then they abuse you Linux: You pay NOTHING, maybe donate a couple of bucks if you want to or if you enjoy it and have know-how contribute with code or something else but 90% of Linux users don't do any of those things and have infinitely better experience

I just responded to this in detail but YT deleted the comment. You are still tracked, even if you don't sign in with a Google account. Only a de-Googled phone with no Google Play Services on it will stop the tracking. You are fooling yourself if you believe otherwise - Google Play Services gives Google the phone number, IMEI number and your location to within 2 metres using wifi triangulation. It also gives them your relationship to others through your contacts, and others that have your phone number in their Google contacts will give them your name and number.

It's sthe basis of encryption security that the source-code must be open and well-documented, so you can pass through resistence tests made from cryptoanalists amd guarantee it can't be cracked from people with bad intentions, any encryption alghoritm that is closed-source is a vulnerable alghoritm. BitLocker is closed-source, proprietary and not documented, wich already makes it unsafe.

A good alternative for Windows users to encrypt their drive is VeraCrypt, it works in the NT Kernel levels and allows you to decrypt your drive from boot, it's also FOSS

That chip is called pluton and it's build in AMD's newest CPU's and it'll be in Intel's in the nearest future.

Actually the minix os chip isn't tpm. It's actually the managment engine on Intel and the PSP on AMD. Basically it runs at ring -3 (lower level then your kernel) Can bypass firewall rules, encryption, passwords can track your screen, webcam, mic, keyboard, PCI-E devices, mouse, bios whatever if you're on a virtual machine or not (it's lower level then a type 1 hypervisor) and can't be disabled. How about you just LEARN AND USE Open Source software rather than demanding it. Sometimes stuff only happens if you take direct positive action and isn't "delivered into your lap" just because you sit there and demand it. Drivers pretty much auto update in the kernel. All hardware attached to your computer is usually auto detected by operating system and updated as needed.

There are FOSS privacy respecting versions of Android available, but they really don't come preinstalled on many phones. Usually you would need to buy a phone that has the bootloader unlocked and install one of these FOSS privacy respecting Android distros yourself. LineageOS, CalyxOS, and GrapheneOS are three great examples of privacy respecting Android distros.

@@russellmania5349 I love Linux Mint but it doesn't support Wayland, I have 2 monitors that have different refresh rates (165Hz + 72Hz) so Wayland is a must, I switch between Gnome and KDE Plasma at the moment but neither of them are even as stable as Windows 7... I know they are community created and maintained so I can't complain, I just wish i had the skills to help out with KDE development. I am learning the C Programming Language so maybe I'll be able to help out one day. :)

Yeah at the moment I cant really switch my laptop or PC over to Linux becuase I play games on them that use anti-cheat, and I need windows for other stuff that doesnt run under proton, but once the anti-cheat issue is solved I will migrate my main PC's over to Linux (Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2 & My Windows 10 Machine) I would dual boot but at the moment its not really feasable to dual-boot when I could just have one operating system that does everything... I run Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 (Version 1809, Build 17763) on my Laptop and PC with all of the privacy settings setup correctly and Admin password required every time I need to use UAC.

I don't trust them, every single time they get mentioned it's a different name and they spread through comment sections and replies on sites with little to no moderation, just like crypto scams and malware, apparently there's more custom windows isos out there than linux distros lol. Also if you have debloated windows yourself before you just know how inviable it is for the longevity of your system so the features they claim are suspicious. Even MS has always warned about custom ISOs since the XP days, long before telemetry was even in their mind. I can guarantee you that most of them are just malware.

I use "The Pizza Argument" when friends or colleagues suggest the same thing to me. I don't like olives. So when I call the pizza restaurant to deliver me a pizza I tell them "please leave off the olives". What I don't do is say nothing, wait until the pizza is delivered and then pick off the olives one-by-one to the make the pizza edible for me. The pizza argument applies to installing an OS you know to be untrustworthy and then fiddling around with it afterwards to try and get some trust in it. The fact is that you just need to look on eBay to see the huge numbers of 4GB DDR3 and DDR4 RAM modules being sold on there. The reason for that is that most computers today have two RAM slots and therefore, at a time when Windows 11 is being rolled out, many people have decided that 8GB of RAM is not longer enough RAM for Windows 11 - hence they're upgrading their memory to 16GB (or more) and selling off the old stuff (which is great for me who runs Gentoo Linux on "any old cr*p" PCs and buys most of his hardware used - but I digress). If 8GB RAM is no longer enough RAM for a base operating system, before you consider running any other applications on top of it, then that OS is doing some VERY NEFARIOUS stuff in the background to need such resources in the first place - presumably telemetry and "phoning home" a lot. Your friends are fools - when everyone stores so much personal information on their computers, you MUST be able to trust the operating system on that computer. By their own admission, your friends don't trust Windows unless they continually spend large amounts of time fighting against its telemetry, and continually having to do so because every time Windows updates, it can choose to revert settings back. Plus, as the other commenter here has already said, they will download hacked copies of Windows too. All this wasted time and effort could be put to far better use just installing and learning Linux, an OS you cant trust from the moment you start running it.

@@sarthalion not really. The small market share is one of the reasons viruses aren't made for Linux, but it's only one reason. Linux is much more secure by nature. Apps don't get root access by default and software is installed from repositories, not the internet. The best place to make viruses for Linux would probably be the AUR but I don't think there's many other places where you could put malware without it getting noticed.

Windows (10, 11) has much more security migitations in place that generally Linux does not implement and in many cases implemented ones are not enabled in the kernel. OpenBSD has pretty much every known migitation implemented and enabled and Windows is pretty close too. Gone are also the days when everyone ran Windows as "root". By default UAC is enabled and it does pretty good job nowadays. It's hard to compromize Windows without user interaction. Propably harder than Linux. Of course your point about software installation are true and most of the time repository way is more secure. Most malware is spread by email or via browsers (ads, javascript) and when Linux popularity in consumer machines rise we will see more malware for Linux for sure. Note that when I talk about security, I don't mean privacy. They are too different things.
