Did you not see the empty streets when the WNBA team was celebrating their championships? No one cares about the WNBA and non of them are stars. They are living off the NBA, without their contributions the WNBA wouldn't even exist. Empty stadiums and low viewership are the reality of the WNBA.

Clark and Reese have the personality and charisma to impact the WNBA the same way Larry Bird and Magic did. Yes they are all incredible on the court, but Clark and Reese walk into the league with a ready made fanbase and marketability. The thing the WNBA has failed miserably at is marketing the personalities of the players. Clark and Reese is their opportunity to show they can market this league. Better marketing = larger casual fanbase = more ticket sales/viewership = more ad revenue which leads to bigger contracts for the women.

I do think Reese has to develop her game. She won’t be grabbing put backs at the same clip as she did in college or the way Cardoso will. But if she puts in the effort and develops her footwork and shot, she already has fans and everyone else’s attention. Good luck to her.

@@cobra7282 Theydidn't have a decade long rivalry. It was a college rivalry. Listen, this isn't about the skills on court. Magic and Bird beyond their on court achievements changed the way the league marketed their players. They were both had so much charisma and personality that non-fans became casual fans, and casual fans become die hard fans. Not true. Last year's Final Four drew big ratings because of Clark. The taunt happened in the last seconds. Clark attracts big ratings and attendance because of her skills, mainly her shooting. Iowa-UConn and Iowa-South Carolina had bigger ratings than Iowa-LSU this year. Some people might want controversy but most want to see the quality of basketball advanced. The white panel basketball in the WNBA is more difficult to visually follow than the traditional orange ball. Give it the eye test. Great conversation. Will Caitlin be a superstar from day 1 in the WNBA. Most likely not. Too many good players. She will get humbled on numerous occasions for sure. But I also think she will be very good. The entire draft class for the WNBA is a really good one and the league is trending in part due to this entire class and the popularity of Women's College Basketball these last few years. The more important thing the WNBA needs to do is to figure out how to showcase and market the league. This feels very similar to the NBA in the late 70s going into the early 80s. There were fabulous players in the 60s and 70s. Bill and Wilt, Oscar, Dr. J and on and on...but the league was not popular on TV. Heck even when Magic and Bird come into the league in 1979 and Magic's Lakers make the Finals, some of those games were pre-recorded and televised late at night. That was the NBA Finals. But then you had a guy like David Stern, who was not yet commissioner, who knew the league needed to be marketed differently than the NFL or MLB. He managed to get more advertising around the unique skills of the players...and then Michael Jordan came along and the world changed. David knew that MJ needed to be the signature piece of the marketing, even if Magic and Bird were on better teams. Kareem, Dr J, and other greats were amazing players but he knew that the marketing would be more effective when pushing the new up-and-coming talent. That was Bird, Magic, Isaiah, Charles, Patrick, The Dream, and mostly MJ. Think about the brilliance of Spike Lee and the Mars Blackman commercials. The McDonald's commercials featuring Bird and Jordan making astonishing shots for a free lunch. Think about Nike literally betting the future of their company around MJ and the Air Jordan sneaker, and so many more. This is what the WNBA needs and they will have to figure out a unique way of doing this that makes sense, enhances the popularity of their game, shines a light on these women, and ultimately brings fans and revenue to their arenas (and on TV). The cities that have WNBA teams need to think about this as an economic growth center that helps to bring more businesses, jobs, and fun to their cities. I hope it happens.

Caitlin Clark will be an immediate star for sure. I think it's going to take some time for Angel Reese to be a star. She's too similar to a lot of other players that are already in the WNBA. Caitlin Clark is a very rare type of player. No one's ever done the things that she's done before. She's captured the attention of the entire nation.

Caitlin is not going to be shooting lights out right away in the WNBA. Look at how SC Johnson shut her down after the first quarter. Steph Curry didn’t come in the league and become an immediate superstar. It took 3 years. Angel and Caitlin will both have to work on their games.
@DanDolphin4
@DanDolphin4 Ай бұрын
@@loisperez1722 Of course she'll shoot lights out right away in the WNBA. Shooting is shooting. It doesn't just go away. And she shoots better than almost any human on the planet. Her passing is transcendent. And this isn't the NBA like Steph Curry had to join. Her talent level aligns with a lot of these WNBA women. And she'll have the best teammates she's ever had in her life. No one in the WNBA has ever had the type of game Caitlin has. You can't name one player except Steph Curry that shoots from the logo consistently with plenty of time left on the clock and with no rebounders under the basket. I think you're being a little naive. She's going to go into that league and pop the cork off. 🏀🔥

Championship has nothing to do with skill. So many of these girls don't make it. She has to get an outside shot, which I think she will. There is tons of competition in the league, and everyone is fighting for a spot and their is only 12 spots per team. She goes to a young team like Chicago Sky where they actually develope players she will be fine cause their will be no expectations for her first year cause it will be a young team.

The biggest PROBLEM is that the WNBA draft won't be on FREE TV. It's ESPN only according to my quick TV search. If the league wants to grow, put the WNBA DRAFT on FREE TV. Not going to buy ESPN package nor go to some bar just to watch any DRAFT. By the way, the NFL draft will be on FREE TV, ABC. So I don't get not having this WNBA DRAFT on FREE TV. Also, both Stars underperformed in their last game. How well either star will perform, well that might be more dependent on how the REFs make or don't make calls for them. Bad Refs can turn a good player into a GREAT player.

This is not the fault of the WNBA. I think had Clark and Reese declared they were entering the draft before their senior seasons than it's more likely than not the draft would've been on ABC (maybe even on a Friday or weekend). Cable companies have to know far in advance what they're going to show and if it's going to get higher ratings than regular schedule programming so they can get the advertising dollars as well. Simply a case of too little, too late lol

I'll be going to aee Caitlin Clark play this year. Indiana is about to make a lot of money. The downside is that Caitlin Clark isn't playing on every WNBA team. The rest of the league will still struggle to sell tickets
@kiroolioneaver8532
@kiroolioneaver8532 Ай бұрын
I think at the beginng there will definitely be a knock on effect (especially for those teams that picked up other high profile players in this draft such as Chicago or the LA Sparks). This happened with the newly formed PWHL which saw really high ratings over the first couple of weeks (despite the league being hastily cobbled together because "this time it was different"). That initial enthusiaism is going taper off as we get further into summer and people don't want to spend their time watching anything on TV let alone sports, but they're still going to retain a healthy amount of those people even if it's not as crazy as it initially was.
@RushBig0786
@RushBig0786 Ай бұрын
@kiroolioneaver8532 I think you're right. The entire league will get a boost in the beginning, but over time, if Caitlin keeps playing the way she plays, she'll be the only draw. Angel Reese name is big but her game is like the rest of the women. She won't he a big draw. The next big draw will be Juju Watkins in 3 years for sure

Good point on Angel, Stephen A. Yes she's a great rebounder, but half her offensive rebounds are her own missed bunnies and mid-range shots. She's rough at the foul line too. She'll have great coaching though in the league and I'm sure they'll help her get that great shooting muscle memory down.
