After qualifying for the first time to Copa America, the concern for Canada now is to do better than their World Cup run is 2022. That means they must win a match!

Remember that in the latest 4 copa America finals, at least one of these nations played: Chile, Peru, Argentina. So, this groups is NOT easy.

From how I’ve seen Chile and Peru playing against Argentina, I know they like to high press and play possession. But against Canada, it will be different cuz they will be vary of Canada’s speed and the ball-playing ability of Miller/Vitoria/Johnston, I’m sure both teams will play a low block and be very physical against Davies, Buchanan and David. Against Peru it shouldn’t be much of a problem cuz they can’t build up under pressure, but against Chile it will be tough cuz Maripan, Paulo Diaz, Isla, Suazo, Aranguiz and Pulgar are excellent at moving the ball against a high press. It will be a difficult game but overall, I would give the edge to Chile.

Especially the high tempo style of play for the South Americans. Canada has never seen that, they’ll be playing Netherlands before Copa but that is not what they’ll see at Copa, the dramatics and ebbs and flow of the game will be much more fluid and transactional. They face European teams at the World Cup which is a different style of play. Even a poor South American team will have a ruthlessness to them. Canada can’t fear the worse like they did against Croatia and Belgium in the World Cup but they will have to be much more pragmatic and play to their strengths. Consolidate in defense and hurt the Chileans and Peruvians on the counter. They did it during World Cup qualifying and then somehow decided to switch it up at the World Cup only to get exposed because they couldn’t maintain possession and go toe to toe with better teams in the midfield and backline. They try to play toe to toe with the US and got exposed by Gio Reyna at the Nations League Final.

@@JeanClaudeCOCO Yes, good read of things. I'm hoping against hope that we see a proper coach take over in time to use the Netherlands and France friendlies to learn how to play in a defensive block and hit on counter - press hard for 15 seconds upon turnover but then pull back defensively if the ball is not regained. Sprinkle in some random hard pressing but ultimately prioritize disciplined defense and opportunism. It would be hard shift in style for these players but it needs to be learned now so we can play smart football in '26 and actually compete.

Biello is called the "interim" coach for a reason. All the players understand and are fully aware that getting a new coach is a very real possibility. Therefore, getting a new coach will be minimally disruptive and, if anything, will allow players to relax in the understanding that their longer term direction is now settled as far as coaching is concerned.

Waiting for that Peru - Canada game, one fact you forgot to mention besides from Argentina, Peru's the only team in copa américa who has qualified to the knockout stages the most since the 2000s

J. David needs better service on the MNT. I'd like to see Hoilett sitting behind him as a 10. A 4-2-3-1. Larin comes in for the last 30 mins or so and goes up top while David then falls back into the 10.

Here's a bit of wild ideation; how about experimenting with Davies as a CAM in the Netherlands match - starting Shaffelburg on the left wing and Adekugbe at fullback (in a 4-5-1). I personally don't think Davies will work well there but I'm all for giving it a go for 45 mins.

Alphonso misplaced so many final passes against Trinidad when he had loads of space to work with, he doesn’t have the consistency in small spaces to play like Riquelme. Honestly Eustaquio as a 10 would be more successful than him, play Piette as CDM then.

@@Total_football_and_relationism Yes, I agree about Davies. However, there seems to be an agenda in Canada Soccer to get/keep him in an attacking position, and therefore I'd like to see him experimented with in attacking positions that he hasn't yet been in so that a new coach coming in can point to examples of how/when it didn't work. For me, Eustaquio doesn't quite have the attacking instincts enough for a 10. I'd like to see Hoilett in that role when it's deployed. I know people will say he's too old. Osorio would be my next choice. I think Kone and/or Ahmed could grow into that role quite nicely for the future. But I also think that we should deploy a CDM instead of a CAM for Copa America. A 4-5-1 that moves into 4-3-3 in attack (or 4-1-4-1 or 4-4-1-1).

Canadians losing their 3 matches in the last WC and scoring a single goal feel themselves superior to Chile and Peru. You guys are just begging to be squashed during Copa América, aren't you?

@@thefozzybearTbh a lot of Canadians thought Croatia would an easy team, mainly cuz Modric was 37. What they forgot about was that Croatia had many players in their prime years with world-class technical ability, and that’s not even taking into consideration that Modric just won the CL with Real Madrid and had an excellent start to 22/23.
