@jogendron6320 , Wilt Chamberlain was the most hard fouled basketball player in any era, the Boston Celtics hired enforcers to elbow Wilt Chamberlain on and off-the-ball aswell... Jordan had little to complain about Compared to Wilt...the rules helped Jordan dominate in an expansion era and the same could be said about Shaquille O'Neal... Wilt one on one in the modern era, dominates more than in his era, instead of a Boston celtic player running in front of Wilt off the ball, giving Bill Russell the advantage of camping out in Wilts favorite fadaway spot forcing Wilt to dunk, with two or three players hanging off him or elbowing him... That's a major difference the nba let it happen!

@dominictant-Wilt is not even close to being basketballs goat. He is never mentioned when that debate comes up. In his day he was unmatched in hight and wingspan, when the average hight in the NBA was 6'3ish, he was almost a foot taller. Wilt displayed almost no PURE athleticism COMPARED to players from even as far back as the 80s, but he didn't need it in his era. Imagine Shaq as a rookie in 1959 when the average hight of a player was 6' 3ish, now Imagine Wilt as a rookie in 1992 when the average was almost 6'7ish. Shaq would no doubt have more points and rebounds than Wilt. Wilt in 1992 would have less points and rebounds than Shaq. I guess that's why it's said that one shouldn't compare eras.

I'm not saying he wasn't great, he was, the best in his day/era. I mean seriously look at the style of play in the video. Then look up LeBron at 17 or Kobe. Granted they're not centers but still. There are too many variables when comparing eras. Would Jim Brown be Jim Brown in today's NFL. I think not. A 230lb rb/fb in 1957, he was bigger than most line backers and not much smaller than some linemen, BACK THEN. Anyway I respect ur opinion, but respectfully disagree...cheers

Wilt was a very good athelete. He starred as a college track star excelling in the long jump but was a good middle distance runner at Kansas. He was also a professional volleyball player. Threw the shot put in excess of 60 feet. He was a center. Just as Jordon or LeBron cannot play center in the NBA Wilt did not have forward or guard skills. But he was as unstoppable as much as Jordon was if not more.

imo bball doesn't suit him best, he was fast but his quickness wasn't on the same level as his speed. Speed is useful in quarter mile because there is more room for you to run up to your full speed but in basketball it's all about moving within 5-9m most of the time you can't get nowhere near your full speed, you need quickness to keep up with people in short bursts, in bball you need more quickness than speed, he's package was the opposite so bball was not his stong suit. He was also very skinny so if he faced bigs around his height but bulkier he is at a big disadvantage because those guys may be both quicker and heavier than him. Just to add 7'1 isn't that tall for a NBA centre tbh.

Stop it. Russell won 8 of 10 while he was in the league, whereas Chamberlain won 1 of 10. Chamberlain played with 6 of the top 50 players (at the 1996 50th anniversary), whereas Russell only played with 4. During his career, Wilt played with players that were 24 time all-stars, Russell with 26. Chamberlain played with a hall of fame coach, still not enough. Russell was the head coach 3 of the years he played and in that time period won twice as many as Wilt did in the full 10 years they were in the league together, and as many as Wilt won his entire career.

Wilt was a shotput thrower, a champion high jumper, a track star and a triple jumper. He could benchpress 550lbs back in college. The man is IIRC also in the volleyball hall of fame and he only began seriously playing this game when he was past 36. The New Jersey Nets back in the 80's were still actively wooing him back out of retirement when Wilt was already going 50 (In an 80's Lakers exhibition scrimmages, Wilt at center held a Magic Johnson-lead team scoreless).

Notice the size of the 3-second lane when he was playing in the video. Chamberlain was so dominating in his time that the NBA had to widen the lane to the dimensions that we see today to keep him from camping close to the basket and getting cherry picking field goals. He, in my opinion, could have played in the NBA up to age 50 and still be a competitive center. RIP Wilt.

I would easily place Wilt and Russell ahead of Shaq in terms of pure athleticism because both players lettered in track and field, and they possibly could have competed in the olympics. Don't just look at Wilt's weight: there was so much more to his stature. It really boils down to skill and intelligence, and in those areas, I think Wilt would get the best of Shaq. Wilt could dominate from the high post as well as the low post. He was a more complete center, and he would give Shaq hell.

One year, Wilt destroyed the competition for the the scoring and rebounding titles (again). A sportswriter joked that he didn't have many assists. The next year he led the league in assists.

Wilt was the greatest force in bball history. I've been watching since 1960. No big man could run as fast as a guard like Wilt. WIlt could bench over 500 pounds! My uncle saw him do this in the weightroom at Kansas (my uncle was an lineman on the football team). Wilt won the Big Eight high jump title one year, was a world-class 440, threw the shot and javelin as well. Wilt could do a standing broad jump from the foul line and dunk. Not allowed now, but I doubt anyone could do it anyway today.

@ronskidizzle High School in 1954 didn't count goal-tending the same way they did in the NBA or NCAA - don't worry, his blocks in college and pro games were legit by today's rules. His standing reach in his barefeet was 1 inch taller than Shaq's in his shoes! Add in his vertical, and you have the only center who blocked PRIME 25y/o Kareem Abdul Jabbars skyhooks REPEATEDLY even though Wilt was an arthritic 35 yr old! 23 skyhook blocks in one h2h playoff series! watch?v=IYq4CWeWaKg amazing!

You’re dreaming. Wilt blocked that skyhook consecutively in one sequence. Both times playing off of Kareems body. Watch the footage again. If Kareem got you body to body, there’s no way anybody blocks that shot. To remotely believe that Wilt blocked that shot 23 times, is a JOKE! I did see Kareem block Wilt as many times as Wilt got him.

@@marksheppard6498 Wilt blocked the sky hook twice on the same play, one Jabbar moving to the left shooting it right handed and again after Jabbar recovered the loose ball moving to the right and shooting it with his left. Wilt was a beast. When Wilt teamed up with the Logo Jerry West they won 33 regular season games in a row and that record still stands today. You can't get these prima donnas to play 33 games in a row. smdh

@motrcolt It was a counting regular season game. Back in those days NBA teams often played a certain number of "home" games at alternate sites. Hershey PA was one of them for the Philadelphia Warriors.

@ryanrpitem theres a few reasons why a lot of nba games werent taped or broadcasted to start with and wilt chamberlain was playing a game in hershey park which was small at the time for an audience of about 3000 which isnt very much. A game that small was probably considered a sidenote and not recorded even tho it turned out to be one of the most memorable games of all time

one thing you have to remember is that basketball back then was a game of speed not a half court set with post up players. If Wilt played in the 90's he would have been much bigger and stronger than he looks here. He would have worked out and bulked up to go against bigger stronger centers. If Shaq Robinson and Ewing played back then they would be sticks as well.

Did a quick web search, and found this on a mercurynews website: Clifford Ray/ George Johnson (the Two-Headed Center)- "Neither Ray nor Johnson were much of a factor on offense...Johnson was very thin and a leaper and blocked a lot of shots. [Mike] Ray and GJohnson both knew their limitations, and didn't take any shots outside of 5 feet." [JJC] "Johnson, the 6′11″dreadnought, was the only player that I've even seen block Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's vaunted skyhook (not once but twice in a game!).

@PhillyDippy5 The 76ers were a great team: Wilt Chamberlain played with HOF Hal Greer, HOF Billy Cunningham and Chet Walker (an excellent scorer)... they beat the Boaton Celtics in the Division Finals in 1967 because THEY played/work together extremly well! When Chamberlain was with the Warriors, he played with HOF Tom Gola, HOF Nate Thurmond, HOF Paul Arizin and Guy Rudgers (lead the NBA in assists 3 times), he wasn't alone... basket is playing 5 vs 5, not 1 vs 1 as you seem to forget it

Wilt was a "freak" for his time. 7'1" and 275 lbs. Great athlete. He was a very good high jumper {as was Bill Russell.} Russell had Red Auerbach and Bob Cousy. Two very strong individuals who were dedicated to winning and knew what it took to win. This is not to diminish Russell's accomplishments or his greatness but Wilt's "situation" and Russell's were very different. I think if Wilt had played for the Celtics the Celtics would have been very successful with Wilt. Such a great player.
