David Ben-Gurion - Zionist leader and Prime Minister of the State of Israel - was born as David Green in Plonsk, Poland, in 1886 and educated in a Hebrew school founded by his father, an ardent Zionist. Ben-Gurion led the course in Zionist history and shaped the character of the Jewish state. After World War II, he challenged British authority by organizing massive "illegal" immigration and established de facto Jewish state borders, created Jewish settlements throughout the country, and encouraged the development of a Jewish defense capability. In 1948, as head of the Provisional Government, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel. In the early years of the state, Ben-Gurion's strong and charismatic leadership led to waves of massive immigration than doubled the country's population. He directed most of the nation's limited resources at integrating immigrants.
