I've noticed from my own games that the 4-5 knot Task Forces are actually convoys that are heavily escorted with an escort carrier or light cruiser at the center.

Diary of a u-boat navigator: December 2nd, 1944 Not long after our last attack, we made contact with another lone merchant. It was a pasanger/cargo and was heading back to the USA, perhaps carrying back some US troops who were on leave. She was a tough one, not going down with 1 torpedo so the captain fired another one at her, this time she began to sink, taking down with her the unlucky yankee soldiers who survived the war on land only to find their graves in the vast atlantic ocean, but such is the nature of war, and until this war ends, we will continue to do our duty as submariners of the Kriegsmarine. December 9th, 1944 Looks like our attacks have started to get the atention of the allied navy, our captain tells us that he has been getting reports of 3 hunter-killer groups operating north of us. I hope we don't run into one, but if we do, the captain told us that we will give them a run for their money. That would be the greatest test for this new boat, let us hope we won't have to push her too much. December 12th, 1944 Today we once again intercepted an allied convoy and attacked it. While the initial attack seemed to be a failure, thanks to german engineering the torpedoes went to their search patern and ultimately managed to hit a target each. After the attack, we dived to 140m and listened. Our hydrophone operator informed us that 2 ships were going down. After disengaging the convoy, our operator would also inform us that 1 ship was lagging behind the convoy, so the captain decided to finish her of. It was a lonely, sad merchant that wished to be put out of her missery. And so, after our mercy blow, she went down with her other merchant friends. After all of that, the captain decided that it was time to turn back to Bergen, saying our torpedo supply is too low. Oh well, at least soon i will be able to see the sun again. I find center shots to be balls basically always. Tramp steamers and small cargos have the best chance of survival from a center shot and will often survive a single center shot. The reason is the semi realistic ballast model GWX uses that doesn't allow capsizing. Aim for the bow or aft and you'll usually sink them in one shot. Also I could be wrong but I think the problem with contact reports at least as I remember is even if they're accurate they don't include any partial adjustments. So if it says a convoy is moving at 5 knots the convoy could actually be moving at 5.5 or 5.7 knots.

When Wolfpack missed, I was hoping he would catch up to the auxiliary cruiser at 18 knots, masking himself with noises of the surrounding merchant ships. Oh well, I guess even the Type XXI has its limits. I just hope that Wolfpack will meet the same convey again by some chance and sink at least two auxiliary cruisers this time.

Too bad there are no longer any milk cows available, a type XXI would wreak havoc. Though if you get to a second patrol, maybe an idea to "Have orders from BDU to try and track escort carriers and other warships to relieve the rest of the u-boats". Somehow a type XXI just seems too capable for attacking "meager" cargo ships and Germany is getting desperate...

I toured a type VII some years ago. At 6'4" I came to the conclusion that had I served in such, I would have died of head injury from repeatedly banging my head on every pipe, valve and hatch in the damned thing!

hearing the crew celebrate a successful torpedo hit is my favorite thing

When I was about 7 years old and I first played that game, I didnt know how to use the TDC, or the rangefinding, etc, and I also couldnt speak english (not even a bit, but the game was in my native language, so I could make it work), so I steadily became so good at guessing the way and speed the torpedo should go that I sometimes use it even today, and its about as accurate as the TDC.

great episode once again. I do think that after sending your report back to BdU, once word reaches Dr Goebbels you can be sure to be in one of his speaches, the tide is turning......

Really enjoying this series. Clearly, Wolfpack has this game down, giving him a proper submarine makes it not really fair.

Periscope up for maximal 10 seconds. And with "up" I mean awash, just enough that you can get a rough idea what you see. You do not have to retract it all the way, in good enough weather 1-2 metres under the surface should do. A XXI could flush its 18 torpedoes within 20 minutes (the torpedo autoloader is great), and probably should in such a convoy. As you have a convoy, at least initially all cargo ships have the same speed and direction. All that changes really is the distance. The distance of each column is also known. And the more the torpedo will run on a course that is 90° to the target course and the more the torpedo will just "go straight" out of the tube, the distance does not matter at all as long as it is in torpedo range: only the relative speeds of torpedo and target matter. So basically your could position yourself at 90° to the convoy track, look along the bearing that you need to shoot for the torpedo to go straight on out of your tubes and simply pull the trigger when a ship crosses the bearing. This may however not be quite fast enough. Make a target list: which ship in which column do you want to hit. Get the rough distance from your boat to all relevant columns from map and memorise them. Start with the torpedoes that will need the longest to reach the target, the furthest column of interest. Change the distance to the second furthest column, fire at the targets. Repeat until there are no more targets or torpedoes. (For bonus points, do time it that the ships on the other side are hit first.) Then GET THE EFF OUT OF THERE. That is what a XXI can do: run so fast than the escorts cannot match speed *and* use their ASDIC equipment. You may be noisy, but you will be too fast, unless they really, really cooperate well, with some listening and pinging and others being guided by them, and then leapfrogging ... Order all tubes reloaded. I suggest you could run just under the convoy or pop up on the other side of it --- do not go directly under an escort, though, unless you sneak in via their baffles. Repeat: target list, positioning, distance ... but this time, for bonus points, you time the torpedoes so that the ships on your now close side get hit slightly before the other side. Reload, reposition, fire, go home in time for dinner. Falke or Zaunkönig torpedoes are ideal if you cannot aim properly and do not want to blindly rely on your sonar man, just make sure they do not hear and chase you! Just like Mr. Grenade: once you pull the pin, Mr. Grenade is no longer your friend! Albeit the XXI had an S-Gerät, which used a "ping" that was so short it was nearly impossible to detect, never mind find the direction it came from (with the technology of the time); 3 pings over the span of a few minutes are enough for a firing solution, especially with acoustic torpedoes, but FAT/LUT will do quite well.

I love this episodes and whish that they will make a silent hunter 6 that is more relistic than silent hunter 3 with mods

the optics are impressive. But a convoi fight wasn´t so easy, even in a boot like this - if that ever happened. After a torpedo hit the convoi defence would be raise up. The first defence after a torpedo hid was to change the konvoi curse immediatly. And than, of course, the destroyer searches and attacks. And there were 10 or more patrolcrafts, corvettes and destroyers around.

Imagine being in the middle of 3 task forces and still loose 3 ships in a convoy to a UBoat.

The endless Engine Noises, bad Air, stinking Seamen, Food getting worse and worse each week, fighting a lost war and risking life to sink insane defended Freighter......... i cannot imagine how desperate the last two War Years must have been for everyone.

I think you didn't hit the auxilliary cruiser because the pattern searching kicked in before it could hit the ship itself. That's why I don't like FaTs, they require that extra management of checking if it's in pattern arm range or not.

If the target's speed is 0kts you don't need to calculate distance or AoB. The only thing the computer needs is target bearing to set the gyro.

So thanks to your videos, I'm thinking of spending money on a submarine simulator, but not sure which one to go for. On one hand the cold waters one seems fun, but doesn't have the "hands on" torpedo aiming style. So I was thinking about Silent hunter or Uboat. Which one would be better?
