In this case it's only because they provided the gun and refused to get him help when the school warned them. In most school shooter cases they either bought the gum themselves because they're 18 or they stole it from a family member.

If my child had been killed by someone whose parents had been warned by the school several times that he was mentally unstable, who refused to take him home to deal with the issues, and on top of all that bought him a high-powered weapon for Christmas, I would be seething with rage. @@charlieduvall6463 I would assume he had some type of custody agreement with his ex, which is why his other child was staying with him in the first place. Based off of how the mother spoke about him, I doubt she would’ve agreed to any kind of custody agreement based off of her judgment alone. I could be wrong about this, as it is just an assumption, but the courts must not think his behavior as a father is all that appalling as the mother makes it out to be, otherwise he probably wouldn’t have any type of custody to begin with. Which could make this a first time offense of neglect for him, which, I would think, would help in his case against the involuntary manslaughter charges. Also, is his behavior as a father towards his first son actually relevant towards his other, which he had full custody of? Does their relationship status matter as much? This isn’t a condescending question; I’m genuinely curious. Do you have some type of legal training or a current or former student in legal work? I know legal questions generally aren’t something you can just Google, as there’s usually more exceptions to a case than one may expect, which is why I ask them.

I am pretty sure now based on the evidence coming out that the parents had some idea that their son had issues and was unstable. Parents brushing off the school officials concerns about the disturbing actions and notes like they were quite accustomed to their sons state of mind and didn't care. Not to mention that tell tale text the mother sent the boy the day of the shooting. "Don't do it". Implying she may have known what he was thinking of doing or done. Why his parents thought giving him a gun in with his mental state was a good idea, is just ludicrous. Just like the Connecticut shooter. Mom got her emotionally unstable son a rifle. He turned it on kids at an elementary school. Also ended up killing his Mother with the same gun. I guess the Crumbley's got off lucky their son didn't go full circle.

Bullying has always existed, social media made it a nightmare. My parents taught me to ignore the bullies and have confidence in myself. It worked. The school as well as the mom knew this kid was a danger that day and shoved it under the rug. Having spent some time in a public school in the past 3 years it is terrifying the window of our public school system and parenting. A recipe for disaster for the children swept under the rug and the rest who happen to be around when they finally lose it. This boy had problems, knew it, parents BOUGHT him a gun of his own. The school knew it, what part is hard to comprehend? So many teachers hands are tied between administrators needed the money and parents who should not be called parents. @ Chronic Payne: A 9 mm pistol isn’t that powerful. Powerful yes when compared to a .22, .25 or .32 caliber. But most calibers are more powerful. Take for instance .38, .40, .45, 10mm, .357 magnum, .44 magnum and the .500 calibers. Even the .223 pistols, all more powerful. Too many to list. What sets the 9mm apart is it has moderate power, lower recoil and high capacity magazines. That’s why the 9mm has such a popularity. But that kid could have killed as many or more with a .22 pistol. It’s all about shot placement, hitting the vital areas. Any caliber will kill if used properly. Something else to consider is ammo used. Ballistic tipped and hollow points are far more lethal than fmj. The biggest mistake is buying a lunatic any kind of weapon. Those parents had to know their son was mentally unstable. Second mistake was not keeping the weapon locked up. Youth’s can be law abiding fire arms owning citizens under the right tutelage. It all starts at home with the parents. Started my sons off with a BB gun at about 6 years old. Then a pellet gun, then a .410 shotgun, then a .22 rifle. Then moved up to deer hunting caliber. They were under adult supervision when using any type of weapon, gun safety stressed at all time. Preached accountability and responsibility of ownership. Had gun safety courses to get hunting license. Above all, guns, even the lowly BB gun was locked up when not in use. Kids should not have free reign with weapons.

I saw some of the videos on the father’s youtube channel, of a young Ethan like 10 years old. He seemed normal. What changed in 5 years? If your outgoing child becomes withdrawn, wears black all the time, and gets caught with a sketch of a shooting… it’s time to get him help and get him out of school! The parents should have taken all of those signs as warnings to get their son help, or at least get him home schooled. I fully believe some kids are too emotionally weak to handle high school and social media. They need to grow up a little and learn to stop giving a damn what people think. The best way to do that is home schooling. Instead the parents are too inconvenienced to leave their low wage jobs and take their son home that day. Act like parents! This tragedy could have been prevented.

Ethan's That mom texted him "not to do it" tells you the difference between the parents. Then he and his wife ran ran instead of looking after their son when they should have been with him. Just looking at Ethan, from even old school photos, you can see there is something wrong. Ethan's teachers tried to warn the administration, the administration contacted the parents and told them he needs to go home and get into counseling ASAP. The parents response was no and the administration accepted that instead of going with their instincts and suspending him. The mom in this interview seems like she knew what Ethan and his parents are like. It is a good thing her son was home with her instead of his father's home. Ethan made his decision, but it sounds like no one except the teachers tried to really get him help. When a teacher has concerns about something like this and you see some evidence, then you had better listen to the teacher.

Yes schools are absolutely responsible for making sure every child in their school is safe and then gets home safe, and in this they failed. They are absolutely responsible for make sure bullying and questionable behaviours do not happen inside schools. They should have flagged him, possibly referred him to children’s services and suspended him. But they are not responsible for what happens with children outside of their care, or what led Ethan do what he did. That responsibility belongs on the parents. Parents don’t want teacher’s having to much control, nor should they because they are teacher not parents, but you can’t also say in the same breath that you believe teachers should be held responsible for every single thing that goes wrong with a child’s upbringing. Parents need to step up, take responsibility for their kids and make sure they are helping their kids. I’m speaking as a parent. As a parent it is my decisions and responsibility to make sure my children get the help they need, whether academically or otherwise. I am responsible for marking decisions about what school they go to and I am also responsible for their health care. If parents aren’t doing this then they are failing terribly in their duties as a parent.

Long guns are different. I was hunting by myself at 12 years old. My sons were trained in marksmanship and safety before they were 12. In some situations I can see a parent having 100% control over a firearm that might be sentimentally their kids until they are of age. Hunting rifle, sporting shotgun and possibly in some cases a pistol. This situation is obviously not an appropriate one. If your kid wants to shoot sporting clays and hunt birds and you make it a family thing with safety courses and everything, ok but if your kid is drawing pictures of carnage, making threats and fantasizing about death a firearm should never be available to him.

This is the story of so many parents with psychotic ex spouses who fear for their life and can't wait for their joint custody to end. Your life hangs on a thread with fear, panic and dread with every visit because you know how dangerous the other parent's home is but judges don't care and aren't educated in law let alone psychology or family sociology. Family court judges are voted and appointed and don't require any relevant education

I don't think it was a question of "spoiling" (who knows how he was treated otherwise at home?). It was a case of neglect, selfishness, and failing to see reality beyond their noses. When he wrote that his life was worth nothing (I can't remember the exact quote), I think there's a damned good chance that his "parents" made him feel that way. The shooting may have even been an attempt to win their approval, and love.
