Keep the faith. I'm an 81-year-old admirer of you all, so I have tons of experience, which causes me to occasionally yell, "No, don't do it that way, you idiot, you're doing it all wrong." Then I sit back and watch Woody dig himself out again and again and again. By the way, you all might explore the value of a RAM PUMP. It doesn't use electricity and can fill your water tank in no time if you have the right conditions to run correctly. Check it out on KZfaq - there is plenty there about them. Don't worry about subscribers. Your channel is better than others I watch, but it will be replaced with yours. Have a blessed day, Phil.

I’m sure our dads are yelling right along with you! 🤣 We will definitely look at setting up a RAM pump. In the spring there’s a small natural pond that forms up the hill and a little ways east. I’m hoping we can make some use of it. And thank you for the comments about our channel. We have watched and admired folks in this niche on KZfaq for years now and feel honored to finally get to share our own journey. Let me know if there’s anything we aren’t showing to explaining that would be helpful! 🤍

We're off grid with 4 kids and about a year ago our household got a puke bug. I made everyone sleep with Bowls by their heads. : don't you dare puke anywhere but this bowl..." Yeah, I spent an entire day at the laundry mat and then cleaning and restoring everything to a state of sanity. I feel your pain.

Oh good lord that sounds awful. Wade is only 2.5 so he can’t quite take direction on where to upchuck yet, but when he can… 🙌🤣 At first we weren’t sure if it was the bug or not, but by the 3rd incident it was obvious that this was going to be a thing for a whole week 🫠

We have a houseboat, all self built, moored out in the middle of a lake, you can’t get any more off grid than that. Pumps, generator, plumbing and we just installed solar ourselves so that was a game changer for us, it was really hard though, oh yeah propane, old water heater. I learn a lot from off grid channels, so helpful, plus it’s the people I enjoy too. Thanks for the episode!

27:44 For lugs on large wiring I have a small collection of short pieces (anything from an inch to a couple of feet) of any random sizes of copper water pipes around. They make great lugs crimped onto a large diameter wire and flattened to bolt to all kinds of things like inverters, battery terminals, breakers and switches... cheap, good (you can't go wrong with copper lugs) and easy to make (a crimper tool, a small bench vice or hammer, a pipe cutter or angle grinder for cutting and a drill)

BYOB (bring your own bucket) though… Woodys projects up until this point have been impossible to do with Wade, but now that he’s getting older and the projects are a little less enormous and danger ridden, he can be included. Hang in there. It's good that you are keeping a tally on the expenses. I suspect that you have a written plan of projects with budgets. I haven’t watched your earlier videos, so I don’t know your back story and how you got to the Ozarks. It sounds like you are only seasonal at the cabin for now? Your videos and sound are pretty good. I sense that you are being honest and transparent in your portrayals…which is essential for your youtube success. I don’t know if a little advice is welcome, but…I seldom comment, but you three have a compelling presence. Wife and I (67 and 73) are off-grid and off-road in the north Idaho mountains for 5 years now. I hope that you understand with statement: Buying "NEW" and buying supposed "Quality" might seem correct from a suburban or big city paradigm...but frankly, for us, living remote in the woods surrounded by great beauty and all that nature has to offer….that former urban paradigm is only correct about 10% of the time. Yes we are older, worked, saved, spend very carefully and have no debt…which is the large important goal for all but especially those removing themselves from the grid and noise. Being prepared, being resourceful, getting to know and learning from neighbors have saved us many dollars versus purchasing errors. Buy used, repurpose, repair, reassess priorities, counsel together, study, plan, estimate and document....etc. There is real joy in successfully pushing back impulsive purchasing and completing a project that brings a functional solution at a fraction of the buy NEW QUALITY expense. Please understand, the first months AND the first year will also certainly bring difficulty...but each year will bring new and growing confidence in your skills, ability and preparation to deal with issues with new courage and without stress or even panic. Be prepared. Write this on your wall: “if you have one, you have none, if you have two you have one”....wise words to live by in your new adventure. Your children will thank you for raising them in this new way. I’ve subscribed and look forward to see your growth.

Love all of your comment! We’re working to build a little neighborhood of sorts out here with folks we know and love. It’s going to take quite some time but it’s something we’re passionate about. I grew up in my mom’s hometown where her parents and their parents and siblings all grew up and lived. Community is everything to me and certainly having a community of resources to borrow from is essential to making all this work.

Its something I want to do. I'm a 62 almost 63 year old female with one working arm. I've been living off grid in my old motorhome for the past 9 years. I have to haul in my water, haul out my waste/garbage, haul in my propane in 40# tanks bcuz the 100# are too heavy when full. I buy or forage food and home can it either with water bath or pressure canning.I live with my old dog, Sadie who is nine plus years old and has health issues since she had 4 spots of cancer in 2018. Together we make it work. I'd like to move out of Michigan and move farther south. Where it doesn't get any/much snow and not as bitter cold. And where we would have a longer growing season. We've been working towards this dream for about 10 years now. It will happen, when things are right.

You may not know it now, but this is the type of thing that will bring you much closer together. I'm 62 now, our kids are grown up and married. The two oldest are both taking the same type of projects. They heard us tell all the stories of our struggles, and they want that experience. They do have the advantage of our experience to guide them, but its still a struggle. I make it a point to let them make the small mistakes, There's no better teacher. it's fun to see, because I know the incredible satisfaction you get from having completed such a project. Good luck, and keep your head up, it will get better and you'll have some great stories to tell.

Always enjoyed going up there and thought about doing something similar myself. Enjoying your journey with this one. Not sure we could do that ourselves currently with my wife needing to be close to medical care as she battles MS. Also, something I have noticed, the audio volumes are a bit wonky. Sometimes I can barely hear you or Woody, so I turn it way up and then the music blasts out the speakers.

Woody and I don’t want for much, but we have some friends who are (hopefully) bringing in some babies who need a home. We’d love to put together something for them, truly they need it more than we do. We’re just waiting until they get the firm 100% “they’re on the way” call. 🤍

Won't be cheap but it might be good investment to dig a water well. I dont know how it goes in the USA, in the eastern Europe there is plenty of underground water streams and in our villages nearly every house has a water well. My village doesn't even have type of "on grid" water system.

If you are in a cold weather area the water heater will freeze and blow in the winter if outside, my is half of the size run for years also you should do full solar using lithium batteries one 100 amp lithium worth for 6 of those marine battery they charge way fast and easy in cloud days. Use at least a 24v solar system

It doesn’t get that cold here, but we have plans to insulate the water heater set up and build a little enclosure for it in the coming week! I haven’t even begun to look at our solar options yet. The price tag is giving me palpitations 🤣

hey! welcome to the party! we did a couple of videos on that last fall, but mainly, we wanted to move to a state that was defending autonomy and freedom... somewhere that wasnt a hot spot for coastal migrants where we could get established and save room for family and friends. Arkansas checked all those boxes!

A little take it or leave it advice from a grandma who raised three sons who ALL got motion sick very easily. Get a little bucket (a small, play sand bucket will do), and keep it close by at all times. I actually had three as I kept one in the car, one in their bedroom and one under the kitchen sink along with a pack of wipes. Then, at any sign of pukiness, grab it and have something to catch their puke. By the time they were just a few years old, they would grab the bucket or call for it. It didn’t catch it all the time, but it reduced the bed linens, car seat covers, carpet, etc that I had to clean. I now giggle as I have watched my sons do the same with their little ones. As to why I’m watching, I just retired and I’m looking to sell my nearly paid off house, buy a few acres and build a small cabin and homestead it. I’ve done lots of renovating and flipped one house, but that was a city home. It’s part because I’m learning from others’ mistakes and part figuring how to go about the entire process.

Doing a good job here. But, the idea of adding more batteries as you need them is slightly flawed as lithium batteries get age the internal resistance increases, and your new batteries will be just as aged as you’re older ones, no matter how old they are. Basically they just equalize And bring your new batteries down to the level your old ones were. So I would buy as many as I can now and continue to build yourKZfaq channel. Eventually, you’ll have companies wanting to send you their batteries for free. ;)
