Thanks for the lesson. It's a great lesson. The meaning of touch and go is as uncertain to figure out as it really is. I could say life is a mixture of up and down. But it's ok to see up and down because the downs always make us a strong person.
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 5 жыл бұрын
Ha ha. Yeah, you can say it's kind of touch and go when it comes to learning vocabulary. That would mean you find it difficult to understand and retain words. Hopefully, we can work on that skill. ;) Yes, life is full of ups and downs. (Notice how we can make them countable nouns.) Agreed: we become stronger through adversity. Regards!

Good question. These are more conversational expressions. They're not formal. Some hyphenate "ups and downs." Some don't. I don't, but just be consistent. Suggestion: After some ups and downs, I hope to achieve my goal of being fluent in English/to achieve fluency in English. Great examples! :)

Hi Jennifer, this is another useful lesson, which is very important to know. I noticed that when we consider two or three words as one we hyphenate them like back-and-forth, but when we deal with them as separate words we don't put a hyphen. If these expressions come before nouns, which means they describe the nouns that come after them,should I hyphenate them ? For example up-and-down business By the way there is a common expression which is up-to-date.
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 5 жыл бұрын
Good to observe the punctuation. Many hyphenate the phrases if they're used as a noun: I need more give-and-take. We also tend to hyphenate the phrases when they're used an an adjective before a noun: It was kind of touch-and-go situation. VS. It was kind of touch and go. Those are the patterns I see. Then again, most of these will be used in conversation, so you won't have to worry about punctuation. ;)

So true. Make sure you use the plural in both parts: ups and downs. So if you use it like a noun as you did, better to write: Everybody has their ups and downs every now an then. Suggestion for the second half: and if things become touch and go, it may be better to wait and see. In time, it will become clear what's best to do. Thanks for sharing that insight. :)

The person on the phone claimed I could be rich by simply paying a small registration fee to some totally unknown company. Alarm bells started ringing as I didn't want to be lead on a right merry dance by those who take us right down the garden path and drag us from pillar to post. Those people would have you not knowing whether you are coming or going and would happily bleed you dry. Once in a blue moon I am taken in by them; however, I can normally read them like a book and usually see right through their rhetoric. I always remember that old adage that 'it's better to be safe than sorry' and have learnt to take all 'get rich schemes' with the proverbial pinch of salt. If something appears too good to be true then it always is. We saw come useful collocations in that paragraph. Most of the examples shown were idioms; with some proverbs and phrasal verbs also: 'Alarm bells ringing' (idiom) Sensing danger. 'lead on a right merry dance' (idiom) - This basically means your life is being made difficult by someone's lies. 'taken right down the garden path' (idiom) Lied to in an elaborate fashion. 'drag from pillar to post' (idiom) Being sent to different locations in quick succession. 'to have you not knowing whether you are coming or going' (idiom) Being uncertain of what is going on or what you are meant to be doing. 'bleed you dry' (idiom) Take all your money or assets. 'Once in a blue moon' (idiom) Very rarely. 'taken in' (phrasal verb) Believed a lie 'Read them like a book' (idiom) Seeing someone for the kind of person they really are. 'see right through them' (idiom) Seeing someone for the kind of person they really are. 'It's better to be safe than sorry' (proverb) Being safe may be boring but taking a chance is risky. Risks can bring sorrow. 'Taking something with a pinch of salt' (idiom) Being skeptical. 'If something appears too good to be true, then it always is' (proverb) Common sense tells us that unlikely things simply don't happen.
@Englishwithjennifer

There could be volumes and volumes on collocations. ;) "From pillar to post" is quite horrible when you recall its origin!
@stunninglad1
@stunninglad1 5 жыл бұрын
@@Englishwithjennifer I certainly wouldn't write the paragraph like that normally. I just wanted to highlight the common idioms that people say. Word pairings are such a big part of English. The list is endless! (a hyperbole there) The subject of hyperbole, idioms, similes and metaphors all make for good future lessons. I have seen some teachers lump all those areas of English into one lesson, but each deserve their own lesson. I think lumping them altogether makes it a bit confusing and has the students not knowing whether they're coming or going. :>)
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 5 жыл бұрын
Well, similes and metaphors can be taught together. That makes sense. Yes, hyperbole can stand on its own. :) I'l note the suggestion down. Thanks!

@@Englishwithjennifer I do tend to exaggerate often, so I have been aware of hyperbole most of my life. Once I almost got stuck in a low-paying job and I told my family this, "This could be the end of civilization as we know it!' You may have also heard the term 'man flu.' When I come down with a cold, it's always described as a severe flu with a hospital admission imminent. Men like me never just have colds as that never gets the sympathy we crave.

Perhaps. Actually, I think of "Stop, drop, and roll" was what we've been taught to do if we ever catch on fire. How about "stop and think"?

Good recall! I noted in the comments that "knowing something backwards and forwards" is more common than what I said in the video (know something forwards and backwards), but I actually came across a few speakers and writers who unconsciously used the same word order as me!

Hi Jennifer !! Here my examples: 1. The political negotiations were touch and go, but in the end the outcome was successful. 2.-Let´s wait and see if the plan he thought is rejected. 3. There was a lot of back-and-forth between two strangers yestarday. Nobody on the block could sleep. 4. The scientific knew the laboratory offices inside and out. 5. They like to do exercises every now and then. 6. Since the couple broke up their moods have been up and down. 7. People can have give-and-take and accomplish all their goals

Super job, Susana. My suggestions: 3. Usually we hyphenate this as a noun: back-and-forth. Spelling: yesterday. Correction: on the block. 4. The scientist knew the laboratory offices inside and out. (Great! You can know a place thoroughly.) 6. Since the couple broke up, their moods have been up and down. 7. Usually we hyphenate this as a noun: give-and-take. How about this? People can have give-and-take and still meet their obligations/ and accomplish all their goals.

They're similar. If you experience it, you go through it. It sounds more passive. If you face it, I think it suggests you actually dealt with it. You had to resolve the problem.

Very natural-sounding examples, Mollie. :) Thanks for sharing. I was thinking about first responders like fire fighters and the police. I can imagine one asking the other, "How the situation over there?" - "Touch and go. Can't be too sure." Here's a hospital clip: getyarn.io/yarn-clip/cc111b35-850d-45ae-b985-c46433900f3d

1. My boyfriend said that it was touch and go whether he would like to pick up me. 2. When many back and forth occur, I decide to do what I love to do. 3. If you want to know inside and out about this phenomenon, just read the book that I've given to you. THANKS!
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 5 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you're practicing. :) You have the basic understanding of each expression. Suggestions/comments: 1. "Touch and go" is more than uncertain. There's also a lot of risk. So perhaps your friend wants to pick up up at some point along the road, but there's heavy traffic, and stopping is dangerous for drivers and pedestrians there: My friend has been trying to pick me up after work, but my office is on a busy street. It's been touch and go. Some days he can pull over long enough for me to jump in. Other times, I have to meet him on a less busy street. Also note that "touch and go" usually refers to a period of time, and that whole period was a period of uncertainty and danger. 2. "Back-and-forth" is the same as "discussion." Suggestion: When there is a lot of back-and-forth with my friends, we sometimes find a compromise, but other times we each decide to do things separately the way we each want. 3. If you want to know this phenomenon inside and out, just read the book I gave you. (Omit "about.")

I like to sit in a rocking chair. The rocking back And forth relaxes me a lot....I was dating a girl but I decided to stop it. The ups and downs in our relationship was becoming a vicious circle.
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Luis. Good to note that "back and forth" can have a literal meaning: rock back and forth. I rock back and forth in the rocking chair. But as a noun meaning "discussion," it's hyphenated: There was some back-and-forth, but then we both agreed to stop dating. Hope the second example isn't based on reality! :( Suggestion: The ups and downs in our relationship were becoming a vicious cycle.

This is Neeraj from India ,,,,, with a request ,,I would like to ask a couple of questions ,,,,,,, what is the difference between ( the Manager and the principal are coming). Second one is (The manager and the principal is coming) and which verb is suitable. For the sentence (the tea and breakfast is prepared by the mother)) I'm confused,,,,, could you please enlighten me
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 5 жыл бұрын
Correct: The manager and the principal are coming/ The principal and the manager are coming. Compound subjects need a plural verb: Susan and Ali are students. Exception: If you see the items as one unit, then it can be considered a singular noun. >> His favorite breakfast IS bacon and eggs. / Bacon and eggs IS what he eats every morning. (bacon and eggs = one meal)

• In every marriage, one should give-and-take, so that the other partner does not feel unsatisfied. • If you do this every now and then, wait and see how things will turn out.

@Englishwithjennifer 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ra'ed. Thanks for sharing your examples. :) Note: "Give-and-take" is hyphenated if used as a noun. If you use them as a verb pair, you don't need the hyphens. Suggestions: In every marriage, there should be give-and-take, so that neither partner feels unsatisfied. In every marriage, partners need to give and take, so that neither one feels unsatisfied. I like the combo in the second example. Clever! Take care. See you on Simor later. :)
