Really interested to hear feedback on this one, when it comes to employment, do you feel you are paid for your time, or to do a specific job?
I feel it is my time that I am paid for so the work I do doesnt really matter where as I noticed recently, that others feel employed for a specific job and wont do something they are 'not paid to do'

You're not - this is a serious topic of conversation so the vibe and tone are appropriate. Look up the history of the gold standard and the change to the USD.

I found for me, that it came down to what my contract stipulated and working from there. For example, if I am working for a really cool boss, then I don't mind "colouring outside the lines", so to speak and helping out. However, if it is a boss who I do not like, due to how they treat me and/or others, then I am a stickler for what my contract states and I do not deviate. There were times that I had to take up the slack for other workers and that was fine as long as the extra workload reflected in my pay. In short, boundaries are important in employment and/or elsewhere.

Sounds like you’re ticking along nicely, wait a few months and use this hard work as leverage to ask for a pay rise. Some people are just content doing the minimum and being paid the minimum.

Yup, this is happening in most work places and the source of a lot of problems people face.

Happens with most companies I'm guessing. The faster and better you become at your job the more work you'll be given...with no increase in pay. Which is why you should work at the bare minimum, unless the company gives intensives to work faster, better. Aka payrise, bonese, higher postions etc

I’m definitely on the paid for time thinking side too as I move around roles to fit what is needed at that time. Hope you are doing well Adam!

Adam… (sorry for the long winded comment)… your strong work ethic and positive attitude are commendable. However, at times, these qualities may not receive the recognition they deserve. It would be helpful to periodically touch base with your manager or boss to solicit feedback on your performance and inquire about areas for improvement. This proactive approach can open communication and allow you to demonstrate the value you bring to the team through your diligent work and willingness to help. I think it would be worth touching base before discussing a raise, as this will give your boss an opportunity to acknowledge your contributions and for you to showcase your commitment to both your personal and company success. Remember, as they say, “Alwsys work harder than you get paid for to make an investment in your future.”

Kept on thinking about it. The subject reminded me of the wooden drums, similar to a hamster wheel, in children's playgrounds. I used to run in one as a child. It's easy to maintain a normal speed. But if you run very fast, the wooden drum speeds up and at one point pulls your legs out from under you and you roll over, which can be very painful. I've experienced this at work when I've given too much, my boss has piled work on me and I simply couldn't keep up afterwards. This can cause burnout easily.

I can understand where you're coming from Adam, and your philosophy could be true, in terms of your flexibility to take on whatever you are asked, within reason. On a personal level though, being a 'yes man' has only lead me to being a pushover, seeing other colleagues being granted further progression and the salary to go with it, and me being left behind. Sometimes its not always how much or how little an employee does, if they fit in with the clique of an environment or they support the same football team or political party as the fat cat's, they will progress onwards regardless of their performance levels. In other situations, it might not be about amount of qualifications or work ethic so much, but more about skills and an ability to work smarter, perhaps.

Being a "yes man" often leads to nothing good...sometimes though, the right "yes" man can go really far.

@@emperorpelican8187, I did walk away 4 years ago, in fact, and went self employed. Why would anybody with any sense sit still in situations like that just for the sake of bringing in a regular poor salary each month, especially when you’re in your early 40’s and need to be going places in your career.

In my opinion, balance is the optimum. In other words, being open to different things that you can do, but within the agreed daily working hours. Overtime must either be paid or it must be possible to work it off. It is also important that every new work task is more strenuous than the standard activity. Too much new work in a short space of time can cause a lot of stress and be unhealthy.

I don't like to think of it in either of those ways. I prefer to think of it as my company are paying me for the outcomes/work I produce. The value I bring to the company is not linked to the amount of hours I worked, it's about the results I achieve in a given timeframe. This can be for things that are part of my job role or not, it doesn't matter. If I pay someone to come and do a job for me, say clean the house, I don't care about how long they work for. I care about the outcome. If they work quicker they can earn more as they can get through more houses - producing more results.

In the perfect world yes, but I dotn know of many/any jobs that advertise payment based on outcome, all employers state a number of hours, a job description, and a pay. Unless you are working for yourself, its pretty hard to find a results based payment scheme that both parties would agree on
@Youngy365
@Youngy365 2 ай бұрын
@@Add- that is true and I understand that employers do not always see it this way but they should. If you are producing more than would be expected for that role in those listed hours then you're prime to ask for a raise. You are making the company more money. Or use the results you achieved to get a higher paying role somewhere else. Or just take it easy and slack off a bit, if you're doing what is required in 4 hours and someone else takes 8 hours, you earnt it.

For me I think Im paid to do a specific job that I have the skillset for. Not alot of people do what I do and have the wherewithal for it. So i feel like Im paid for the quality of my work. Part of my pay is commission as well so it makes me push harder to get paid what im worth.

One thing worth considering is why successive governments do nothing about homeless people. Because they're meant to be seen by the average man or woman as a warning: Keep slaving away or you could end up like this.

Not really. It's a lot quicker to get a house from the govenrment from being homeless than it is working a minimum wage job. People remain homeless due to drugs and mental health.
