This week i have just comeback from a 2 week holiday and the garden is doing well but needs some works. I will be weeding and fertilising the main brassica patch and harvesting jalapenos. Also providing an update on the cauliflower which is a week away for the first harvest.
Good to be back in the patch

Yeah they really respond to the warm soils and the fertilisier. I thought I lost the lot after the big rains but they came through thankfully

Hi as always your garden's looking wonderful,😉 I've been crook the past few weeks but on the mend now it must be the old age. I had a lot of plants go to seed out in my veggie garden and now I have a carrot bed full to the brim with carrot seedlings also my brassicas have gone mad because I had spread the seedheads all over the place. I do like my style of lazy gardening and the seeds seem to know when to germinate, not something that I understand too well yet.🌱🌱🌱

Hope you get better and get back out in the patch. As long as you get time to spend out there it’s always a bonus 👍

Beautiful garden mate. Many of my cabbage seedlings were hit by slugs, despite snail pellets and Permethrin. I think I need a few landmines to stop them!

Thanks mate. I find that I have a lot of problems with slugs especially on the wombok and the cabbages. I have been working over the years at making it hard for slugs to breed in my patch. Getting rid of mulch I found worked best for me. I do also use a lot of snail pellets to control them because once they get into the head of the cabbage it’s almost impossible to get rid of the slugs

Hi Anthony, hope you had a good holiday. You garden is looking good as usual. Thats a good tip removing the lower leaves of the brassicas. Just wondering, do you ever test the PH of your soil. I know what you mean about how good it is to be in the garden. I retired 6 weeks ago and never felt better. Cheers,

Hey mate nah I haven’t done a PH test for a while but I should look into it. Generally speaking as I am planting in the natural ground the PH is fairly consistent at 7. But I will look at doing it this week

Autum veg is looking great! I have seen you use dynamic lifter, sulphate of ammonia and power feed. When would you use one vs the other?

It really depends what I’m growing and what stage the plants are at. Nitrogen loving plants like brassicas and corn I use sulfate of ammonia to give them a big hit of nitrogen early in their growth. Other plants that are fruiting like tomatoes cucumbers and capsicums etc I would use dynamic lifter as they don’t need as much nitrogen and they do better with the phosphorus and potassium in the dynamic lifter pellets. For corn and brassicas I only do one application of ammonia but if I feel they need more nitrogen I will add dynamic lifter pellets later to give them a bit more nitrogen but as more of the other elements. When I am 2 weeks out from harvest especially once the first heads show I will give them powerfeed to give them a last kick of fertiliser that can be absorbed fast to help them. I have been experimenting with the fertilisier applications and looking at the best amount to add and at what times to apply them

Great explanation. I use pee diluted in a watering can to get a growth burst, I guess similar to your sulphate of ammonia use case. Plants put on explosive growth as a result. I have read pee has a high salt content so once and done.

Hi Anthony, if my broccoli seedlings have grown only about 1cm in the past month would you say I have a severe nutrient deficiency along the way? I have been feeding Charlie Carp weekly and it’s very slow growth

Hi reach out to me on insta and send me a photo @sydney_backyard_veggies it sounds like you may have aphids. Have a quick check and see if there is aphids on your plants. If they are planted in full sun they should grow pretty fast
