Retail has to be one of the worst jobs. Or at least in the top 10. Rude customers, late night hours folding clothes. This animation tells a story of when I used to work in retail. Enjoy!

Retail is one of the worst jobs. You get cocky customers who think they are always right. You get threatening and abusive language. Get shoplifters that deny shoplifting and it complicates the situation. You get some employees family member that comes in and asks for a discount

Managers overriding you by going against store policy just to appease a customer who can't accept they're in the wrong. Especially when they're is no justifiable reason to. Not only does it undermines staff morale. It's not fair on customers who understand and accept store policy. I had a colleague once tell me "customer is always right". I laughed because that saying came from Savile Row, a company that makes tailored suits. Makes perfect sense in that context, but not applicable when it comes to company policy. Otherwise just about every company would go bankrupt.
@rebekahsegun83195 жыл бұрын
It's also a betrayal to their staff. You're letting the customers walk all over them just so you can appease them. It's not cool. If I were a manager, I would NEVER let ANY customer treat my staff like that. If they come in with an expired coupon then get butthurt and throw a tantrum when they can't use it and begin verbally abusing my employees, I will tell them to either calm down and accept the facts.... Or get the FUCK out of my store!

That why I work in the back when in Retail. The work would usually be back-breaking but at least I don't have to deal with the customers 90% of the time.

You should try finding a warehouse to work at. That’s what I do now and it’s pretty much the same as in working in the back of a retail store without having to worry about stepping outside on the floor to deal with customers ;)

Man, you hit the nail right on the head, working retail is awful. I had a sales associate job at guitar center during college and I am SOOOO glad that I don't work there anymore. It's just a toxic atmosphere.

Really I didn’t think guitar center was that bad it always seemed so chill there

I was at a retail for seven months, and due to the lack of career growth opportunities in that location, it ended up being a dead end job. I left it for the military.

Most of the time people move up in retail from either snitching on other co workers or kissing up to management an normally they still don’t go very far I think the most I seen anyone move up was to Human Resources but usually they just ended up being sales lead an make a couple dollars more then the regular associate was

Yeah it's incredibly soul crushing. I hate it when the managers put me in departments I'm not familiar with and customers ask me for help every 3 seconds especially when there's too many customers and not enough staff so I often get in trouble for others mistakes.

I work at TJMaxx and the way adults act is absolutely ridiculous. The toy wall is insane. They’ll let their kids rip toys out of boxes and make tons of messes on the floor while they go take tons of shirts off of hangers and drape them over the rack. Nobody has any respect at all. Oh and don’t forget last night when I had to run up a lady 10 minutes past close (many problems happened in this 2 seconds that I won’t even address) only for her to be like welp let’s go find so and so something else as a gift and WENT BACK TO SHOPPING.

I worked at the same store and experienced everything you said in the video. We had the added bonus of managers telling customers the reason associates told them we couldn't use expired coupons is because the associates misunderstood the coupon rules. It made a lot of customers come in with the assumption that all associates except the managers were dumb. The worst part is that whenever we tried overriding the register to use expired coupons to avoid this situation they would still make us look dumb in front of customers anyway. It was just a lose lose scenario.

Working in pet retail makes me lose faith in humanity several times per day. Between people asking if they can house guinea pigs in terrariums made to transport crickets (aka TINY) or stuck up cat people asking that I clear the store of any dog and/or dog smell before she brings in her finicky feline fucker... *sigh*. I love animals, that's why I took the job, but people are just so difficult to like, nevermind love... -_-

The introduction was so funny. I liked the video. I can relate because I also work in a cloth retail store. The only part I don't know or never had to experience is the old coupons thing since I don't work on the counter. But everything on this video is very real. So true.

God… I’ve been torturing myself with retail since the 90s. I know there’s so many better things out there, but I just like mindless occupations. But everything this guy says is 100% true. Just be glad you’ve never had to work in a discount variety store Suches Dollar General or Family Dollar. At this point in my life, I’m selling paint. And honestly, that’s a lot better. But… It’s still retail.

Lol I had some lady argue with me saying the pair of pants she wanted were cheaper than they were and that the sign we had up was misleading, it was literally the only rack in the store that day that was actually priced right XD. So i told her no miss you have to look at the regular price on the sign, explained to her 3 times no it's not that cheap until final she said, "Well I'm gonna speak to the manager then and they'll give me the price so you might as well just give it to me now." And i looked at her like, B*TCH! What did you just say to me, is what my face conveyed to her without words. I couldn't believe this women's audacity and i could tell she knew i wanted to cuss her out, but instead i took a breath and was like, "Well then i guess you'll have to talk to a manager" Cause I for sure wasn't gonna give her a free ride if she wanted it she was gonna have to work for it XD. Pretty sure I saw the manager tell her no as well XD

During the pandemic, stores aren't just playgrounds for adults. Nowadays, parents let their kids run wild through the store while they pretend to not see what's happening. I mean, their kids are little shit heads and I would want to have a few minutes away from them, too, but truant officer isn't part of my job description. The younger ones were easily distracted by toys (always keep a few in my department, just in case), but the older ones were pretty happy with gifts of alcohol or cigarettes. ;-) (J/K...maybe) Don't want strangers giving your middle schoolers tobacco and alcohol? Maybe don't let them wander around unsupervised at a big box store. The staff is looking for new drinking buddies...

The store I worked at had a repeat customer who is a grump. He was quite angry when I, and the manager, wouldn't let him have a car part today, then pay for it tomorrow. Apparently, we were (to his credit, he used more polite words than this) bastards for not trusting a trustworthy customer. He was trustworthy in this respect, but if he didn't pay up tomorrow, I could easily have been fired if any of the higher-ups noticed. Oh, and he threatened to take his business elsewhere. I said nothing, and had a blank expression on my face as I watched him walk out of the store. I instinctively knew that any attempt at response would have resulted in my pleading with him to carry out his threat. He came back a week later. He doesn't come around anymore due to health problems. I have to remind myself to sympathetic.
