IIRC Harry had already been thinking happy, lovey thoughts before that, but thinking of his parents and Sirius brought about intense grief. Voldy was pushed out because as a narcissist he has never experienced anything like true grief of a loved one.

James’ behaviour in school actually really disturbed Harry in the books. After finding out James was essentially Snape's bully, Harry struggled with the fact he had been thinking of his father as a hero for so long (due to other people’s impressions/stories) plus everyone saying he reminded them of James - but after seeing Snape's memories, Harry also related more to Snape after growing up neglected and bullied by his aunt, uncle and cousin.

I'm impressed by how observant you are - catching Ginny's jealousy after the recruitment meeting for Dumbledore's Army. In the 5th and 6th books, Ginny has several boyfriends (which Ron is of course not happy about) because she can see that Harry's attention is elsewhere. In general, there is a lot more to her character in the books. For example, Umbridge bans Harry, Fred, and George from the Quidditch team and so Ginny steps in to play seeker (and she does a great job).

@@jackkilman8726very much agree. It’s unfortunate he was struggling during HBP due to his drinking so sometimes he would turn up to set hungover or still feeling drunk from the night before. All the anger, frustration, and hurt was perfectly encapsulated in that "LOOK AT ME!!!" And everyone's realization, esp Dumbledore, that Harry was "completely out of f***s." I think that was a mistake, keeping Harry in the dark for so long. Dumbledore suspected a connection and didn't want to tempt Voldy through Harry, I get that, but... From the start of term, Harry should've been in Occlumency lessons, just in case because the connection between the two was definitely there and increasing, so it was only a matter of time. Harry's a natural at quite a bit, but in general, skills need to be learned and practiced. A few cram sessions isn't gonna do it, esp if you're not already a natural legilimens.

I recall the book suggesting that Harry yelled in such a voice that it was like Voldemort's own personality was bleeding out of Harry. Not an emotional snap or a desperate plea, but a genuine, angry command coming from a place of power. That's why Dumbledore stared for so long. He was having to see Harry as more than just a student who could be tutted and told to run along and let the adults handle things. Less of a subordinate and more of an equal, owed explanation.

A lot of people have a hard time expressing why the evil Umbridge does is worse than Voldemort, despite feeling it. I know why because as a teen 1 of the church sermons my preacher did touched on the subject. He was covering the passage where Jesus talks to the disciples & others after they tell the children to leave, implying that the kids were interrupting "adult talk" they wouldn't understand. In part of his admonishment to them not to speak for him, Jesus says that those who harm a child have done the worst evil of all. My preacher went on to say that you have to dig deeper & understand what that line said in the original writings (one of his greatest gripes was how the modern English translation has many mistakes that muddle meaning). The original word used in that line didn't meany any type of harm but deliberate harm against not the body, but the soul. So yes despite all the horrible things people can do to each other, a person that does something which deliberately harms the soul of a child is doing the worst thing a person can do. If you think about it, that makes total sense & why Umbridge, though a fictional character, is hated the most. Her kind of evil is the worst.

The most interesting thing to me in this one is that the prophecy is a self-fulfilling one. It only means something because Voldemort heard a part of it, believed it and was stupid enough to act on it. Actually it could have referred to two boys: both born at the end of July, both with parents in the Order, both sets of parents having narrowly escaped Voldemort thrice. The other one is Neville. And notice this: Voldemort decided upon Harry, the half-blood, like himself, not Neville, the pure-blood (which according to his creed is the only kind of wizard worth knowing). In a way even then he saw himself in Harry. But he didn't know the second part of the prophecy (that's why he was so hell bent on obtaining it now), so he didn't know that by attacking Harry he would risk "marking him as his equal". Had he decided that the prophecy is BS, and had he not murdered Harry's parents and tried to kill him too, Harry would be just an ordinary wizard boy, with no furious desire for revenge. In Dumbledore's words: "Voldemort himself created his worst enemy, just like all tyrants do... he not only hand picked the person most likely to finish him but gave him the tools for the job".

The one thing the movies don't go into is the fact that Snape was a death eater during school. Snape was friends with Lily, Harry's mum, until she broke off their friendship because Snape was getting too deep in with the death eaters, and he also called her a mudblood. James also saved Snape (from a prank gone wrong by Sirius). Also, James grew out of his bullying and became a more mature person, joining the Order of the Phoenix to fight against Voldy. While Snape became a teacher and bullied and abused the kids he taught.

The movies are great but they did Ron so dirty, which is such a shame considering how he’s the most mentioned character in the books after Harry, I dunno how you’d messed up a portrayal of a character like that 😭. When I say this I don’t mean Rupert Grint be fussy e he’s a great Ron, I just mean how so much of his lines and strengths were taken away and given to others (Hermione especially) for no reason. Book Ron is still very flawed of course but I feel like he is very realistic. I know people are complaining about the new hbo show but I’m hoping that they do characters like him and Ginny justice with that opportunity

Something I wished they had explained more is why Ginny is so powerful. Actually just more of Ginny in general, there is so much more to her than they put in the movies. She's the only girl born in the Weasley family in generations, and 7th child in the Weasley family. 7 is a widely known powerful number in most magic universes. They did Neville's backstory dirty as well. They cut out the hospital scene at St. Mungos when they visit Arthur Weasley. They run into Neville who is there visiting his parents. They're not dead, they've gone mad from being tortured long-term by the Cruciatus Curse we learned about in the last movie. Barty Crouch Jr and Bellatrix Lestrange tortured them.

Mrs Fig, the little old lady at the start of the film couldn't have protected Harry because she, Like Argus Filch, is a Squib. They don't explain it in the films, a Squib is a person born to a witch/wizard parent but doesn't have magical powers. They are the opposite of a Muggle-born person with magical capabilities (like Hermione). Dumbledore just asked Mrs. Fig to watch out for Harry in case something happens during the summer now that Voldemort is back. And yes, underaged wizards are allowed to use magic in self defense, but Harry also did it in front of a Muggle (even though Dudley knows about the wizarding world). Also, the torture hex is called "Crucio aka Cruciatus Curse." It is one of the three Unforgiveable Curses, along with "Imperio aka Imperious Curse" & "Avada Kedavra" aka the killing curse.

In Movie version they show Dumbledore very less powerful. Here is the book version in short. Please read it “But Master - he is here - he is below -” Voldemort paid no attention. AVADA KEDAVRA!” Harry had not even opened his mouth to resist. His mind was blank, his wand pointing uselessly at the floor. But the headless golden statue of the wizard in the fountain had sprung alive, leaping from its plinth, and landed on the floor with a crash between Harry and Voldemort. The spell merely glanced off its chest as the statue flung out its arms, protecting Harry. “What - ?” said Voldemort, staring around. And then he breathed, “Dumbledore!” Voldemort raised his wand and sent another jet of green light at Dumbledore, who turned and was gone in a whirling of his cloak; next second he had reappeared behind Voldemort and waved his wand toward the remnants of the fountain; the other statues sprang to life too. The statue of the witch ran at Bellatrix, who screamed and sent spells streaming uselessly off its chest, before it dived at her, pin- ning her to the floor. Meanwhile, the goblin and the house-elf scuttled toward the fireplaces set along the wall, and the one-armed centaur galloped at Voldemort, who vanished and reappeared beside the pool. The headless statue thrust Harry backward, away from the fight, as Dumbledore advanced on Voldemort and the golden centaur can- tered around them both. “You do not seek to kill me, Dumbledore?” called Voldemort, his scarlet eyes narrowed over the top of the shield. “Above such brutality, are you?” “We both know that there are other ways of destroying a man, Tom,” Dumbledore said calmly, continuing to walk toward Volde- mort as though he had not a fear in the world, as though nothing had happened to interrupt his stroll up the hall. “Merely taking your life would not satisfy me, I admit -” “There is nothing worse than death, Dumbledore!” snarled Voldemort. “You are quite wrong,” “Indeed, your failure to un- derstand that there are things much worse than death has always been your greatest weakness -” Dumbledore never failed down in book version. Voldemort was nervous entirely while face Dumbledore. Voldemort go inside Harry coz he failed to face Dumbledore.

My favorite book but least favorite movie as well. Way too much was cut, and some of the acting left too much to be desired even though Radcliffe said he thought it was his best at least up to this point. Namely at the very beginning in the park with him and dudley. That part makes me cringe a bit.

The scene of Bart Jr as Moody torturing the insect in front of Neville is a lot worst than you think During the trial that Harry saw from Dumbledore's memory, when being questioned Igor Karkarov says that Bart Jr was part of the torturing of Frank Longbottom and his wife Meanwhile that Bart Jr was just so cruel, that he forced the child of the people he tortured to watch him do it again on the bug

When Umbridge says, "and who would want to attack children?" It drives me nuts because even if the dark lord wasn't back, these children will be adults in 2 or 3 years and they'll be entering a world where everyone else has had proper Defense Against the Dark Arts training. Voldemort doesnt need to be around for wizards to mug other wizards!

fun book detail: the teachers help Fred & George make things difficult for Umbridge - McGonagall is seen whispering to a poltergeist out of the corner of her mouth that a chandelier "unscrews the other way", while Flitwick takes ages to fix the corridor they turned entirely into a swamp (and when he does he ropes off a small section because he was super impressed with the magic involved)

I remember thinking The Order of the Phoenix was the toughest book to read because it's SO infuriating! Harry's struggling internally the whole time, Dumbledore's ignoring him and not communicating what Harry needs to know, and Umbridge is the nastiest, most sadistic teacher ever to "grace" the halls of Hogwarts. She's so aggravating! The actress who portrayed her -- Imelda Staunton -- did a terrific job because I really wanted to punch her. (Lol!) She's definitely up there with Voldemort as one of the very worst... along with Beatrix Lestrange (who killed Sirius and tortured Neville's parents). All 3 need to be taken down ASAP.

She had turned 11 in April the year the first film premiered- she was 9 when she first stepped on set. That's not the exchange at all. The excahnge is "Did you see me disarm Hermoine?" "Only once, I got you way more" "I got more than once" "Well if you count the number of times you tripped over your own feet and knocked the wand out of my hand" Or something along those lines. Book Ron has no need to better than Hermoine, he knows how good he is and is as such content with what he accomplishes, she is the one who gets insecure about her skill. Which is ofcourse a trait of Hermoine in the books.

Interesting and tragic fact about Sirius' death scene, the scream Daniel let out was muted because it was real. Daniel had lost gran the week before. When asked why it was muted, he explained that when it came time to do the scene and he had to scream, he said he was channeling his sorrow but because of how painful it was the director and cast were shocked by its intensity. In the first movie Ron does mention that "most of the dark witches & wizards are slytherin" but there's also a few from the other houses. Slytherins are cunning and ambitious so that can quickly turn into becoming evil, thats true, but again like Dumbledore & sirius says it's our actions and the part we choose to act on that defines us. The information isn't clearly explained in the movies - there are 3 Black sisters Sirius cousins - Andromeda who married a Mugleborn whizard Tonks and got disinherited because of it, the mother of Nymphadora Tonks. Narcissa Black who married Lucius Malfoy, Draco's mother and Belatrix Black Lestrange. The Marauders until this book seemed a lot like the Weasley twins but here it starts to show they were not "perfect". They often crossed the line between pranks and bullying, most obviously with Snape. Rowlings heros are not perfect they have flaws and weakness. James Potter was a faithful friend and loving father but he was a bully as a kid, Sirius as loving and loyal as he is was unmature and blind in his hatred for Slitherins, Remus is a gentle soul but despite knowing it was wrong he rather remained a silent bystander then stopping his friends when they crossed the line. Even Dumbledore makes mistakes - withhelding information about the prophesy made Harry go to the ministry and led to Sirius death. People are not black or white they are all gray, some lighter some darker...
@jwsel
@jwsel 10 ай бұрын
It’s also important to acknowledge that Snape wasn’t just James’s victim. Snape often jinxed James too. Their hatred was a bit like Draco and Harry. Also, what triggered James to lift Snape in the air was that he called Lily a “mudblood.” James absolutely hated the dark arts and detested the pureborn fanatics.
@sp72929
@sp72929 10 ай бұрын
@@jwsel Actually Snape called Lily a Mudblood after Sirius and James decided to play with "Snivelus" because they were bored, using Snape's own spell against him, commenting about his underwear in front of all the students by the lake, after Lily came to his rescue, after James made fun of him that he needed a girl to rescue him and after he saw a hint of a smile on Lily's face. And he immediately tried desperately to apologize. I am not saying he was a saint, he gave as good as he got, but that was completely unprovoked by Snape and contrary to Draco and Harry who were even 3 against 3, Snape and the Marauders were 3 against 1 even when I don't count Lupin who usually remained a bystander. When you kick a puppy often enough it will bite and I can't imagine a 16-years old boy who would not snap after being humiliated like that.

There's so much to learn from these stories. When it comes down to basics, it's life. I love this movie, but still... One thing that I wish was included was Harry going through the stages of grief.. The denial, anger, bargaining.. In Dumbledore's study, Harry breaks so many things in anger. Dumbledore doesn't get angry, doesn't try to stop him. ...And he explains the prophecy. Trelawney is the many times great-granddaughter of a powerful seer. Dumbledore agreed to giving her an interview for a job, out of courtesy and respect, but wasn't going to hire her (divination is more of an innate power/skill, not really a learned one), and then she had a real prophecy right there. So, her ability is hit or miss; she's not in much control of it. She has rare trance-like prophecies but doesn't remember them. And she makes conscious vague predictions that occasionally sorta come true -- but plenty that don't. Voldemort only knows some of the prophecy because someone overheard it but not the entire thing. So Trelawney lives and teaches at Hogwarts; that keeps her close and safe. Anyway, Dumbledore goes into his realization that he underestimated Harry and Sirius. He himself is already old and in control of himself, having forgotten what it was like at Sirius's and Harry's ages -- the impulsivity and passion of youth. I really loved that scene in the book. Harry's grief is allowed to be. And we see that Dumbledore isn't perfect.. Also, while packing his things for the trip back to the Dursleys, he finds a gift from Sirius that had been there..the whole school year, IIRC. It was one of a two-mirror set, so the two of them could communicate. Harry REALLY needed someone to talk to about recent and current events (Cedric dying; Voldy back; the Ministry's head up its own @ss; the wizarding world in general not believing that Voldy is back, that Harry's a liar, that Dumbledore is crazy and old; Dumbledore being distant; Umbridge's..um..everything; etc). He wanted so badly to communicate with Sirius (the school's floo network was monitored, except Umbridge's fireplace) and he had the means this whole time but now it's too late...along with the possibility of him ever living with Sirius or at least spending some of his summers there, not to mention knowing his parents more through Sirius... All gone. Bargaining.. He even reaches out to Nearly Headless Nick to see about the possibility of a ghost Sirius but NHN (who's obviously dealt with these questions before) says he himself is a ghost because he was too afraid to entirely move on.. It's crushing reality after crushing reality. One bittersweet moment is when some members of the order have a talk with the Dursleys so that they treat him right and allow messages; if they don't hear from Harry regularly, any of them will show up in their..."not normalness." lol ..I do like that ending better. It's still sad, but the ones still in Harry's life show him that they're there for him. We all experience grief at some point -- some at a much younger age than others. Harry's experience as described in the book better reflects reality: the finality, the heaviness, the pain. It's almost TOO realistic to the point of feeling like you're reading someone's actual experience, very personal and private.. Oh, and that bit in the hall with Luna.. In the book, she's looking for her belongings, putting up flyers. The other students hide her stuff every year. Harry thinks it's awful that anyone could do that to Luna who's so nice and good-natured. The people who treat Luna decently--and the list is short--she holds them in high regard. Her ways are more subtle so her friendship may not look like everyone else's, but it's still just as valuable. She's loyal and true. She's one of my absolute fav characters. Aaaaand, I think I've said everything I've wanted to say regarding OOTP (book and movie). Long comment but oh well. LOL I enjoy your HP reaction vids very much!

I REALLY don't wanna say "I told you so" when it comes to Umbitch...I mean Umbridge. Imelda Staunton did an amazing job playing a character who was more hated than the story's main villain. The fact that Umbridge was more hated than Voldemort himself makes the scene where she gets carried away like firewood by the centaurs that much more satisfying. Also, when I first saw Grawp, I thought he looked like the illustrated kid on the cover of MAD Magazine, Alfred E. Neuman. Also.... Cornelius Fudge, after seeing Voldemort: He's back.... Me, sarcastically: Gee, if only someone said that the previous year and at the hearing.

As you learn in this film, Voldemort and Harry share thoughts. How do you keep secrets if your enemy can read your mind or see your memories/experiences? Some viewers think Harry is being 'protected' too much because of his youth or that he's being gaslit. It's actually a security issue, and they've been putting off giving him intell until he's old enough and emotionally/psychologically mature enough to learn and develop the skills and discipline to shield himself against Voldemort. What you say about Sirius's words to Harry, about 'light and dark' and choice... It's like what I said in comment to the previous film, everybody in this franchise has a backstory, and the backstory explains what influenced their choices. They aren't so much bad, but had bad information and bad fears, then made bad choices and felt stuck having to continue in the missteps they've made. If we understood each other better and stopped letting our fears and insecurities project motivations on others, we would make fewer bad choices. We could provide each other paths to redemption. Hagrid was asked to parlay with the giants because Hagrid's a half-giant, like Madame Maxine. Hagrid's father was a wizard of unusually-short stature, so Hagrid is unusually-short for a half-giant at only 8ft tall (Madame Maxine is 10ft). Hagrid is also a little slow-witted due to being half-giant (recall he can't keep a secret); giants are like trolls in their minimal intelligence. Because they aren't too smart, they tend towards physical violence, especially when frustrated, angry, or scared. The giants did that to him. "Last Time" is Hagrid's reference to the first time Voldemort tried to take over. Hagrid is referencing the First Wizarding War. There's a reason the idea of Voldemort returning scares the bejesus out of people. In this film, we are in the start of the Second Wizarding War. Technically, it began with Voldemort's reanimation/resurrection in the last film. One take-away you show draw from this film and take into the future ones is just how much Harry resembles his father. Lupin mentioned it, Sirius talked about it and even called him 'James' during the fight in front of the Arch. Harry himself mistook himself for his father during the time loop, when Harry first produced a full Patronus charm, complete with the stag Patronus. So, imagine how hard it is for Snape to look at Harry and not see the bully who made his school years so miserable? Listening to you talk and analyze what you've seen in the film, you're definitely catching how complex and deep the emotional and psychological depth of the characters and their relationships are. They are written and performed very realistically. I love that you appreciate that. These are well-filled out characters, geniusly-crafted.
