Went to a service call where the system wasn't cooling. The system is low and has developed a leak at the condenser coil. Trane is notorious for leaking here. Would you repair this 14 year old system or replace it?

you can fix, but if you put new equipment on old systems, the life of the equipment will be much shorter than if it was on a new system. Also especially with home warranty work, recalls happen a lot more when you just complete the repair.

Yeah misdiagnosed, refrigerant leak my ass. Metering device is the issue. There might be a small leak but that’s not why it’s short cycling, notice pressure drop and lp switch cut unit off. Pump the unit down replace the metering device, fix your leak and all good. You hacks make me lol Replacing that coil just masks the real issue being the metering device

Recover the 410, braze the leak, pull a quick vacuum and add your charge. 4 to 5 pounds to the recovered gas. 410A isn't that expensive, lol.We were charging 100 a pound for R22 last year. 99% of HVAC companies are scammers. Times and times again I've seen HVAC "techs" wanting to replace the whole unit because it's "old". Last occurance was 2 weeks ago, when a friend of mine was quoted 6k to replace a unit because the compressor and fan were blown. Me, suspicious, not believing that both could go bad at the same time went and fixed the unit in 5 mins. No power to the unit. Breaker was tripped. Reset breaker and unit is running since then. If the breaker was still tripping I would ask questions but it isn't and the electrical load is normal. Of course it was an "honest mistake" from the "tech". Changing the whole unit makes absolutely no sense anyway, you'd never recoup your investment before that POS new unit that won't last 10 years dies.

@@phillipterrrazas575 I hear you. I can be pretty handy. I am not rich yet fairly well off so I can afford to pay someone to come out and fix stuff. Yet most things can be fixed with low costing parts. I know a number of people who have been ripped off over and over. Had a friend who had a water heater problem. You know the kind that blink the light when there is a problem. Most times the cost is around 30 dollars to 200 dollars for a thermocoupler or control valve. The company came in and said they needed to replace it and it would be 1500 dollars. I told them to relight it and tell me the code. It was a thermocoupler which cost her 30 dollars online and about an hour installing it. Works fine and she ended up calling the company and complaining. Not like that did anything. Another friend had her furnace quit working and it was the same type of sales call where they said her furnace was shot and recommneded replacing it. I told her what the problem was by reading the code off the furnace and she fixed it. You can find a ton of these things on social media where people ask their friends who would you call and so on. Most times I do not see them till a day later or when they complain about the cost to fix them. That when I chime in. Several years ago another friend of mine was having furnace problems and they are on propane and the temperature was in the negative 40s for a couple of weeks and she was having all kinds of problems. She called a numeber of places and they told her over the phone that it would be in the thousands to replace her furnace as it is broken. The problem was her propane was so cold that it could not build up pressure to which I instructed her to tell her husband to go out and start the tractor and take a bunch of large square bales and out them around their propane tank and he did it and by the end of the day her heat slowly came back. He was able to run an extension cord and heat lamp out to the propane tank and got it to warm up quite well. He built a shed that he can push around the the tank and there is now electric out at the tank to provide heat if it ever gets that cold again. People get robbed all the time. This old guy I knew had a freezer that had an fridge ice machine that stopped working. He had some type of insurance that you can buy where they will fix your appliances if they break. They come with a one time fee for service and it was I think 100 bucks or something. He was telling me about it and how he was going to wait till the first of the month to have them come out. So whyile I was there I looked at the ice machine and it was one of those really cheap basic ones you can order on amazon for like 50 bucks, I ordered one and it came before the first of the month and I installed it in 10 mins. As its just a couple co screws, a plug wire and the drip line thing. I mean they are so simple he said he could have done it. He paid me at the first of the month and thanked me for saving him that money. I fear that older people get taken advantage of a lot more than people think. One of my older neighbors fears owning credit cards, debit cards and does not know how to shop online. Though they seem to be able to use the internet pretty well. Their fear is that amazon charges a lot of money to ship. I have clearly shown her that they do not. I have ordered things for her online. Though last year she ordered a fridge from a local place in which she paid 2k for a fridge that sells for 1k at home depot. Her fridge went to a local repair man and was sold online as her fridge had a dent in the bottom door from hitting a cabinet door handle all the time. We went and looked at it and ask him if there had been any repairs and old it was and how long did he have it. He said that just fixed a loose wire that had gotten loose and he bought it off some old lady who got a new one. That guy got a ear full. They repaired and sell new and used. He wanted 500 dollars for the fridge. I see this stuff happen all the time. Even here on youtube I have seen a bunch of shorts where people toss dryers, washers for common parts that need to be replaced. Water control valve univeral sells for less than 30 dollars on amazon/ebay and are almost direct replacements. Washer pumps, door micro switches. Dryers end up plugged up with lint. One of my spare dryers I got for free had this problem to which I got from a neighbor who asked me if I would help move the old ones out and the new ones in. I asked what was wrong with it and she said it heats up then stops. Took me 30 mins to take the back off and suck out the lint and it worked just fine. She still replaced them with new units. I do not think these units were 10 years old at the time.

Always the best approach. Present it to the customer from both sides and let them make an “eyes open” decision. You build trust, which builds rapport. I always look for companies that pay their techs on commission, and I do not recommend those companies. After 35 years in the industry, it has been my experience that motivating techs in that manner almost always backfires. Better for me to say “I don’t make any more or less depending on your choice to replace or repair”

$100 # 410 is high. Your marking that up about 6x $50 is the going rate 2023. If that is in the aluminum coil they make a coupling to repair that. If it's in the copper that will be a very quick and easy fix. Under 2 hours with fix with vacuum and recharging the system.

R410a is 18 dollars per pound when you buy a 25 pound canister. FFS why they hell are you charging 100 dollars. This is where you make your money by charging 100 dollars for something that is 18 dollars. Had someone come in a couple of years ago to replace one of those condensate pumps and they charged me 150 dollars just for the pump. The fucker left the box that came from amazon, so before I paid him I bought the exact same pump box and all unopened and went to their offices and handed them their trash box and all then told them that I would not be paying the 150 dollars for the pump. I will pay what I paid for the pump. Which was right around 50 dollars. I showed him the unopened box and then his box that the pump came in. I then told him that I am going to take out a nice size add in the local paper that show that you the owner of the company have been ripping people off for who knows how long. He begged me not to do that and said he would refund everyone in the last 2 years and to give him a week to get everything to gatherered. Took him a bit over a week to send me a copy of about 50 ish names with statments of the original order price and then the price they paid and a copy of every check. I called about 10 of them and asked if they got refunds and they all said yes. They are not happy with me. Seen the guy a couple months back at a local eatery in which they were not willing to stop and say something. I still have that brand new pump and will just replace it if it ever fails again. I also do not take kindly to people ripping me off. I was willing to pay their service fee of 100 dollars due to where I live yet not the over charging me. I am well off enough that something petty like that I will blow 1000 dollars just to prove a point. I even went as far as to hire a lawyer to take someone to small claims court because they failed to adhear to a written agreement. So much that they complied almost right away. The lawyer had done next to nothing so they did not charge me. I got what I wanted. So do not ever try and rip me off because you will regret it.

NoVac Install Kit 208/230-Volt They have DIY units you can buy this is a 5 ton system that would cool roughly 2,500-3,000 sqft they have other units that come pre packaged with an air handler as well for easy DIY install. If your mechanically inclined and can follow directions you can replace the system yourself with 10 year warranty and it costs roughly 3,500$-6,000$ for the system depending on the size and brand. Trane and Carrier make similar units. This exact one I put on here will cool 2,500-3,000sqft. 5,400$ with 10 year parts (I’m a commercial HVAC tech) a lot of people don’t know they sell these systems and you don’t need an EPA license to replace or install because the line set is pre charged and you won’t be dealing with refrigerant

Most likely in the sub cooling circuit. If it is a piston inside, you can just bypass that circuit, and it will last for years.

If it’s leaking in condenser/evap and I can’t patch it or repair it’s time for a new one. When electrical components fail boards relays contractors etc that’s small compared to compressors coils and fans and blowers

Customer should always make the choice. I give them all the options and all of the info. Explain the risk of repair vs replacement. Working for a company puts limitations on what I’m allowed to fix. Not one company I work for has let me fix anything involving aluminum.

@@HVACTechTipsI don't question the 2800 dollar repair, but the unit is old. When the next repair occurs , you could have applied the 2800 to a new unit plus the cost of the next repair. It happened to me. Better to replace any unit over 12 years old in my opinion.

That R-410A cost them less than $15/lb yet they charge over $100 lb. Check out Ability Refrigerants out of Texas. I bought a 2lb container of R22 for $100 with free shipping. Local HVAC guy wanted to mark up the R22 to $215/lb, charge me $99 for service call that included no labor and then $140/hr with 2hrs labor. Would have cost me $800 to install 2lbs. I paid a tech on the side $150 and he was done in less than 60 minutes including time to check for leaks.

Reading these comments remind me why I got out of the residential ac business. No matter what you do as a tech, you're the son of a b*tch. We come to your house when you're hot, we find the issues with the unit, we give you options to repair/replace and then we get roasted because every homeowner knows a friend who had a similar situation and it was only a breaker, fuse or add freon. The sad part is that if he repaired this leak on a 14 year old unit and in 3 months, there was another leak because the coil is breaking down, he screwed you over by fixing it the first time. The he is an SOB for charging you to make the same decision a 2nd time. God I love dealing with internet trolls and cheap homeowners who google everything.
