Hey Cody and Mrs. W.... now you're talking my language. I really enjoyed your yard hydrant installations at the barn and the garden. A couple of things I wanted to bring up. I spent twenty five years plumbing. I was probably one of the last generations of plumbers that actually was an apprentice to my father that spent over forty years in the trade. My son is now a plumber himself. First, the problem of pipe corrosion and eventual failure on the riser to your yard hydrant is typical. Electrolysis is most likely the culprit, as you have two dissimilar metals connected to each other (in your case the the galvanized and the brass). You are correct, the galvanized will most likely outlast the black iron pipe. I might suggest that you throw a bit of gravel in around the base of the hydrant to allow the drain hole to be free and clear of mud, clay etc. so that it actually will drain out when the hydrant is not in use. Second, it never hurts to put in a post to secure the hydrant to. I can only imagine that you sometimes have long sections of hose connected to your hydrants on the homestead at one time or another. When you are trying to pull a kink out of a long hose filled with water, you might not believe the amount of force you put on the 3/4" riser (ESPECIALLY the new hydrant in the garden, as it is only connected to 3/4" PVC. I have repaired or replace dozens of them that have broke off at the thread for just that reason. Third, great lesson with the correct way to put PVC pipe together, i.e. Primer/cleaner AND cement. It is a two part process and the combination of the two actually melts the surface of the pipe and the fitting together. Though you can get clear primer (not allowed in some states) the reason that the primer is purple is so the plumbing inspector can see that the two part process has been completed. Lastly, you are a fortunate man, Mrs. W is a fortunate women and your son is a fortunate young man. It seems that more and more families today can not do things for themselves. It seems that many husbands and wives are not best friend anymore. It seems that people have forgotten the importance of God in their lives and it seems that many (too many) young people today don't even know how to put air in their bicycle tire. Thank you for sharing your love for God, your family and your homestead with us.

You two make a good team. It's fun watching you work together. My dad was an automatic fire sprinkler fitter for 25 plus years. We did many projects together, much like your's. We installed garden hydrants on the old homestead in the early 90's, and he helped me with my house in the late 90's. I love those garden hydrants. I anchored mine to the concrete foundation with a pipe clamp and all-thread. In the garden I drove down deep a one inch pipe about a foot away, and clamped them together near the top with a piece of strut.

So true about a quality help-mate. You are a blessed, as many of us are. Realizing you are blessed is the mark of a mature man. Watching your interactions is fun because you two are so calm and relaxed. Your mouse incident reminded of putting up some window trim with my dad. I was on a ladder with hammer in hand and took a quick tap at a spider that was on the siding of the house. It darted into a knot hole of the trim around the nearest window, causing a wasp that was inside to immediately fly out and tag me on the finger. It happened so fast I didn't realize it was a wasp and not a spider, so I jump off the ladder (about four feet) backwards thinking I was about to deal with a painful spider bite. lol. It swelled a bit but my dad and I had a laugh and I didn't try to hammer any more spiders. Thanks for your videos.

I really enjoy watching the videos of the two of you working on projects together. I learn something (actually, quite a lot) from each and every one of of your videos. Thank you. I've run a bunch of pvc while hard plumbing my round above ground pool and wanted to install a second return on the far side of the pool. Not wanting to have several 45° angles because angles slow the water flow, I learned to bend the pvc to conform to the bend of my pool. It worked like a charm!

I enjoyed this video and the comradery you and your wife share. I used to own a few backhoes years ago and was surprised to see that you only bury your line 2 -3 feet deep .... but I suppose that it is only a summer line to the garden. I'm not sure where you live but I live in the province of Saskatchewan in Canada. All my water lines are buried 8 feet or more depending if it was buried under a driveway or road ... because the frost was driven even deeper on a travelled roadway. I am a 62 year old Christian man and would like to thank you, your wife and Brian for taking the time to make these videos. I really wish I had half the energy you have.
