Surprise! Found this unlisted video from ages ago, so here it is! If you like the General MIDI Synth, there are updated modules, X16 and X16GS. There is also the X2, but seems out of stock. All of them support loading a few different Sound Fonts and presets to sound like in this video.

Whats insane about this is, this is how I remember these sounding in my head from playing them back in the day. They did not sound this good.

Does indeed sound better. I've been researching SB16s for a while now and the more I listen the more I think just how awesome the Descent theme is. Great work buddy, you really do help the community out.

That sounds much better! Mostly due to cutting down on reverb. A little is ok but the preset on the original video was WAY too much IMO. Thank you for posting this!

In the 90's I always prioritized cpu/ram/graphics over sound, so everything I played just got FM synthesis. When I listen to all these MIDI versions, they sound utterly foreign to me, and to this day when I play my retro stuff, I'm pretty much conditioned to hear it all in FM synth 🤪

Sounds good. I will be ordering one soon. I have almost completed my MIDI module collection so now I am down to this and the Dreamblaster X2 and a CM-64 or 32l. Have not decided which one yet.

@@philscomputerlab Yeah, I am leaning towards that. I have a MT 32 old, SC 55, 88 Pro, MU 80, 2000 EX, and Korg NX5R. I feel one of those two will complete along with the Dream x2 and Buran.

Hi Phil, thanks for making midi related video's. sorry for bad news, but i think your privateer.mid file is broken, its missing half the instruments among other problems. the song from privateer that mid file tries to play is Privateer I - Agricultural Base.mid and should be 1:35.48 long. If you find a non-corrupted version, demos of future midi products will sound way better.

As you like to "play" with MIDI, I suggest you to get Roland Fantom XR, or Yamaha MOTIF-RACK, they are old profesional studio MIDI modules, but both of them are supporting also General MIDI (Roland even GM2). With right settings they can blow out of waters any soundfont (Fantom have even physical modeling of guitar amp simulation).

IIRC yes, but it's not up-to-date in terms quality. Which is the case for graphics, sounds & music really. DOSBox Staging it at the front of that and eXoDOS will upgrade to that AFAIK but due to the size of the project it takes time.

Would like to hear some "reall songs" too not just these gaming themes. I am a hobby musician and I am considering building a stand alone midi player for backing tracks while playing guitar and singing. Seems a good and well balanced sound though

I know this was an issue back in the day with the PC port, but Final Fantasy VII just sounds wrong. I think it's because it has a specific reference rather than a slate of possibilities as was the case with DOS and 90s Windows titles. Despite sounding different than what I remember, I don't have the same reaction with the rest of the music.
