Xbox Remote Play and XCloud Game Streaming on Steam Deck Tutorial

While Microsoft has an official solution for Xbox Cloud Streaming (XCloud) on Steam Deck via their Edge browser, the open source community has come up with a far better solution. Greenlight will allow you to not only stream games from the cloud to your Steam Deck but also over the local network using Xbox Remote Play and the latency is almost non-existent.
In this video Steve will walk you through how to setup Greenlight on your Steam Deck including getting SteamOS ready for AppImages. You'll be able to access all of your Game Pass games without needing to install Windows on your Steam Deck!

Little update on this. I just installed 2.3.1 version and it didnt make that Applications folder. If that happens, just right click that file and choose add to steam.

Just wanted to say I appreciate you posting this. A Reddit user posting his experience gave me confidence to try this. I asked him for video link and lead to this. I’ve watched this soo many times. Finally took the leap and followed your lead. Now I have access to over 300 ga,es from my Xbox series x. Aside from random audio crackling, the remote play directly from my series x is perfect. Wow this works great, thank you. I put Windows 10 on a SD card and tried Xbox remote play and it performed pretty iffy and got some disconnections on Wifi. This working natively on Steam OS is running solid! Now my Steam Deck is doing what I was really hoping it would be able to do, play all of my Xbox games anywhere in the house.

I've used this tutorial in June 2023 and it worked perfectly fine. My first impressions of remote gaming are great and since I mostly use my steam deck in the vicinity of a Wifi router this might become a wonderful solution for me. I sure do like a cold steam deck with minimal fan noise and 5 hours of battery life! p.S. OP mentions on several occasions that cloud gaming is worse of an experience than Remote Play. I do have cloud gaming too and I disagree. I have literally no latency at all (tested on 2 different Wifi's and with 5G hotspot from my phone) and am having an absolute blast playing my Xbox Game Pass games over Xbox cloud gaming. Great guide and excellent podcast too. Definitely going to set this up on my Deck. I've not played on my Xbox in several years, preferring to play my Switch (or recently the Deck) as I didn't want to take over the TV. This seems like a great option... Is every game that I own streamable locally (from my base Xbox One)?

I've done all of the tweaks you could think of for the Steam Deck, but this is strangely giving me a hard time. I can deploy the package and bring up the actual GUI to remote play. But I want to install it so I can bring it over to gaming mode. When I drag the application over to the Konsole and install > enter.. it just opens the app. I'm not getting a Applications Folder on Home. 😞

Fantastic tutorial! Got it working right off smoothly, one thing I can't figure out though is that if my TV is off the screen on my steam deck is black. I did also notice that it pops up the cloud streaming window in front which you have to close, not sure if that is anything to do with it or not. Is this a setting that I need to change on the Xbox?

thanks for the video I saw earlier there was a comment that was running into an issue where it would not work on the console mode that it had basiclly a spinning pinwheel of death with the steam icon. I had the same thing happen to me but i was able to fix it looks like the version i had was updated to what you used but guess the coding took out the automated --no-sandbox in properties. After putting that in looks like it worked.

This is great stuff! Knew nothing about Greenlight at all. Subscribed! A quick question; does it support haptics? One of my frustrations with xcloud streaming over Edge is that there's no controller rumble (while the native XBox app has it).

I does! I’ve just tested an Xcloud stream of Forza Horizon 5 and there’s some definite vibration there.

@@FlipScreenGames Oh man, the sad irony. I was literally just trying Horizon 5 locally streaming from my Series S, and there's no rumble 😂 seems like it *only* works in XCloud, not local streaming. But I'm not gonna complain about it too much, since this is the only way I know of on the Deck to stream from a local machine at all. Hopefully they'll get it patched in.

I think the link for green light needs to be adjusted. I had to click on the other releases to find the latest 2.0.0 v14 beta. After doing that I got the right appimage and was able to do the rest of this guide. One question though... to start streaming from the console there is no way to use the controller is there? you have to click on it with your finger, right?

If it’s in rest mode I believe it will turn on but if you use energy saving mode there’s no way unfortunately.

Thank you so much for the tutorial. It was working great for me (I was able to access my console and play games remotely HOWEVER after trying to power the Xbox down from the steam, now I cannot connect to my Xbox anymore. When I click connect; the connection times out before starting. I tried installing again, other versions of greenlight or Xbox cloud beta and doesn’t work anymore. Any ideas?

Hi Great video I have switch at the moment but I'm not enjoying it due to the lack of game and also how the joycons are. Would you recommend buying steam deck. I'm on the fence as there are also another portable handhelds available but loads more expensive. Also there is talk of steamdeck 2. Thanks

Hi Dev, We're going to answer this question on this week's episode of The Steam Deck Podcast in more detail but I don't think you'll be disappointed if you bought one. Steam Deck strikes a good balance between performance and price and its open nature means you can stream things like Xbox to it.

Greenlight recognizes my steam deck as a controller under Settings, Input and under #1 it sees it as a MS X-Box 360 pad 0 - vendor:28de product 11ff, … when I launch connect to my console for remote play none of the controls work - only the remapped N key works for triggering the Xbox button. Any ideas?

My question is does this work with games that I bought in the Microsoft store and downloaded on to my Xbox? I have a similar program set up to stream Game Pass on my steam deck and it work great but I am unable to access my Microsoft paid digital library. What I’m trying to do is: While using game pass streaming on my steam deck I found that I am able to play online games like Battlefield, Day Z, etc… which are unavailable for steam deck on steams storefront due to the anti cheat, by streaming my digital downloads I could by pass all of the steam decks anti cheat limitations.

I had an issue where LB and RB is trying to control the actual green light app. But that was in desktop mode and could be the issue.

Having issues connecting to the xbox gets stuck here when the xbox is on wifi : xCloudPlayer Component/Video.ts - Media element created On Screen I see: We are getting your stream ready... Connecting to console... When the xbox is on a phone hotspot it seems to work but obviously slow. Any ideas on what might be happening??

It's also good to note that this is the only way to get console streaming on macs. Apple/Microsoft block the iOS/ipadOS xbox app even when sideloaded on M1 macs. It's awesome to have something to use.

If your not seeing your console listed. Navigate to Xbox settings on your console > devices and connections > remote play > enable remote play. Took me a little bit to figure this out as it wasn’t included in the video. Cheers.

I gotta say, for a non Linux user, that Assassin webpage is super confusing. I was searching for 5 minutes on where the releases link was, and I basically gave up, and just typed in releases at the end of the URL to get to the page.

@@thomassweet9312 I’m sure after 3 weeks you’ve figured it out; but, for anybody else having the same issue, I removed the parenthesis and had to remove “-fullscreen”. It works now and is in fullscreen.

Thank you! I was using the xcloud program for Xbox Remote Play, and I wasn't impressed with the connectivity. Sound was cracking and frequent picture freezes. I hope Greenlight does a better job!

Hello there. I have the following problem: The Greenlight app boots but I can't login. I am in a country that xCloud is not available, however I need the app to remote play locally. It worked perfectly fine with the previous release. When I press the login button, a new page pops in which the login button is grayed out. Any ideas?

There’s a new beta which fixes a lot of things and is worth downloading. I’d also reauthenticate in desktop mode which also seems to solve issues.

Update: making a folder myself fixed the issue. It's not connecting to my console, sitting on the connection screen but I can imagine thats due to the poor internet where I am. I am nowhere near my console.

It's likely down to your power saving setting on the xbox being in energy saving mode. For remote features it needs to be set to rest mode.

Hey thanks for this. It's streaming well and connecting to my xbox but I have no sound. Anyone any ideas on a fix ?

Unfortunately that’s not possible. The Steam Deck screen is 16:10 and the Xbox outputs a 16:9 image.

So I deleted everything and reinstalled. I’m no longer getting that error in promise code, but now it’s been stuck on connecting to your console screen with the green circle. It hasn’t been able to connect on both console mode and gaming mode. Xbox cloud gaming runs great so I don’t know what else can be wrong any help would be great!

Have you tried fully restarting your console from the settings screen? Someone else commented that resetting the console fully solved the problem for them. Another thing worth checking is that remote features are turned on. Hopefully this article can help: support.xbox.com/en-GB/help/games-apps/game-setup-and-play/how-to-set-up-remote-play

followed your instructions and it works but the lag even streaming 5 feet away from the xbox is pretty bad. its nearly unplayable. is there any xbox settings or steam deck settings to ensure maximum bandwidth or something? i have a 250 down / 30 up connection too..

You can change the bitrate within the Greenlight app settings. I would also check your Xbox network settings to make sure all ports are forwarded correctly (NAT and UPNP)

You are close to the xbox, yes, but in fact, you are connecting from the Steamdeck through your router to the xbox. Buy a netgear gaming router with wifi6 if you feel that your router is the bottleneck. It's going to cost you, but you will thank me later. Also, putting wireless devices too close will not help. Make sure there are no concrete walls or floors between the consoles and the router if at all possible. 5ghz is able to provide more bandwidth/throughput, but it does not penetrate walls and floors as well as 2.4 ghz. Try one antenna or the other and find out which one works best depending on your house layout. Most recent gaming routers have both antennas (5ghz and 2.4 ghz). SOLVED: I had remote play but needed to “allow all devices” instead of just devices logged in 🙌🏻

Okay so idk why but seems your link share is exactly like all others who share links from this site based on what I see in video that’s not what I see on the link….I see not download button I don’t see anything saying version like seem everyone who shares this sites never actually show what we see and I don’t see what you are showing
