Numbers 15 : 32 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day.
33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation.
34 And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him.
35 And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.
36 And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the LORD commanded Moses.

The god of the bible is a sick, inhumane, barbaric character. That is, unless you think that He's loving, kind, perfectly fair and perfectly just, - in which case He's that. Never mind what He's apparently told us about Himself.
This is actually a re-make of one of my first videos, from 2008. The original video had, at the end, footage of an actual stoning that had taken place somewhere in the Islamic world, taken on a camera phone. The video was banned and taken down in 2009, and I didn't dispute the ban.
I could never get around to drawing a stoning scene that I thought would have the same impact. A few months back I came up with the idea of seeing if people would like to draw cartoon pictures of a stoning that I could include in this remake. I made a quick video calling for submissions, and you can see the results here.
I'm so happy that my request was met with such wonderful replies.
Thank you to all those who responded - there were many more than I could include, time-wise, in the video itself.
Written, performed, drawn, etc, by me.
Music written and performed by me via GarageBand on the iPad and the Mac.

Christian believers, you have a choice: either defend the story of this man's being killed by having an angry mob of barbarians pelt him with rocks as being the holy justice mandated by a fair and just god of perfect love,...
or join the rest of the world in rejecting any deity's involvement in the story as a piece of insane fiction dreamt up by savage people hoping to convince somebody that their barbaric cruelty was mandated by a holy and unquestionable moral authority. It wasn't: it was fucking sick, AND YOU KNOW IT.
The bible is bullshit. Look elsewhere for perfect love.
Isn't it funny, that if you took a random sampling of people from around the world, it would most likely be the CHRISTIANS amongst them, not the atheists, that would voice any disagreement with a statement declaring that stoning is, and always was, a monumentally unnecessarily cruel and inhumane form of punishment. As an atheist, I can say outright that it's a sick and disgusting method of execution- and the standard Christian response to that would NOT be to say that they agree with me, because that would condemn their god. Rather, the response I usually get is for them to say that since I don't believe in their god, that I don't have a moral framework upon which to base such a statement.
Well - if the only option is a moral framework that declares stoning anything other than fucking barbaric, then I'm happier with the one that I have (or don't have)!!!
If you are convinced that there must be a god - a source of love and life and joy and morality and hope - then keep looking. Yahweh is about the worst candidate for that job that there could possibly be. Read the bible for more proof of that.
FUCK: I can't believe I used the first person singular subject pronoun as an object pronoun.

We do sin to survive in this cruel world we don't know if there really is a god imagine spending your whole life struggling because of hunger, torture cuz you don't want to break God's RULES. thinking in the end you'll get to enjoy heaven but later find out there is neither god nor heaven or you followed the wrong religion God is not helpless he can give the people what they are struggling to get why he needs to test us for heaven ofc have you seen a rich steal food have you seen a happy person murder someone (I'm not supporting murders but saying he had reasons why he murders people murder cuz if getting cheated,anger, money. God can love his children without being tough Adam and Eve were literally minding their own business when god punished Lucifer and gave him the power to mis guide his creation *why god want people who loves him cuz they're scared of hell that's not love cuz they're scared or greedy for heaven* Why didn't he just destroy Lucifer? Cuz he wanted to show him how powerful he is and can make him suffer if he doesn't obey him.means God has alot of pride And remember god made the rules himself it means it doesn't matter if he changes the rules. We were more happy when we didn't exist he didn't ask " look I'm gonna make you but if you'll not follow my rules or I'm gonna burn you are you ok with that?" why would he cuz he's powerful and he knows it. Our feelings doesn't matter to him He made comparison he has a son Jesus then he has angels then his followers I even want the evil people to be in heaven (to me no one is born evil it's the circumstances) but why he also doesn't forgive atheists? Athiests also have their reason they have not seen god God will punish us if we follow another non existent god without thinking much but also hates when we think/ question if God is real ?? The only way you can go to heaven is born in a house where they believe in real god by chance My mom is a Muslim she has faith in Allah no matter what I say she still believes in Allah than Jesus. I'm an atheist cuz I questioned my religion. Me and my mom will both go to hell?? And how can you be sure you're religion is right just cuz you have faith?? there are 4200 religions and everyone from a religion thinks everyone who follows other religion is wrong. **I want your reply to this**

@JeffKubel
@JeffKubel 10 жыл бұрын
The best apologist argument I've heard was at agameforgoodchristians.com/posts/44. I don't agree with it, but as a recovering born-again, bible-believing Christian myself, it appears to be plausible that the context suggests the guy picking up sticks was doing so an act of defiance, a big F-YOU to God, if you will. Reason being, the previous chapter goes into discussion on how to remedy accidental screw ups with regard to the law, and these verses with the sticks dude were allegedly contrasting that. Again, it's a plausible explanation. The problem that I have with that argument is, even with this interpretation (which puts this story in the best possible light), how can an all powerful, all loving God be so emotionally weak and immature so as to murder someone who merely offended him over something as trivial as a day of no working commemorating the day He rested. It's so petty. Can you imagine being one of the observers that day, commanded by God to pick up rocks and stone the guy TO DEATH? That would suck. But wait- wouldn't that be work too on the Sabbath? Or is stoning not work- maybe it's just considered fun. And not only that, but after his horrible death, God would have sent him into a lake of fire for all eternity. Life is but a vapor in the grand scheme of things- but that one act of rebellion equals eternity in hellfire? Even an entire life of rebellion doesn't justify eternal torment. I can't see myself doing that as God, and if I did, I would hope people would be evolved enough to NOT worship me. And if I were God, I certainly would have sent my Son ASAP to quench my rage before I allowed my chosen ones to suffer through this barbarism for THOUSANDS OF YEARS. How many millions of people would I have smitten (or commanded others to smite) for outrageous violations of my arbitrary commands?
@selfishlyintrigued
@selfishlyintrigued 9 жыл бұрын
***** The best part about this is they are admitting defeat. Even if it was a "Fuck you" to god and an act of defiance... So what? A god wouldn't be a 12 year old CoD player who rages beyond belief unless you love/follow him unquestionably. God is supposed to be perfect, so any religion showing god to get mad at extremely pety things must be inherently wrong. So you justified god of the bible is a 12 year old, good job christians!
@JeffKubel
@JeffKubel 9 жыл бұрын
JamesCizuz I agree, but the response most Christians would give is "you aren't God" or "God is all knowing, so you can't judge his reaction without his omniscience" or "He is perfect, thus the way He responds is perfect- if you disagree, you are imperfect". These "because God" arguments can't really be defeated in one swoop or with one clever response by atheists. This sort of understanding is integrated into their belief system- and as someone who still has that belief system largely intact, I can say it's really hard to overcome. My suggestion to atheists is to show patience and love toward those of us who are still largely in chains to this sort of thinking. Eventually, people capable of independent thought will question the moral character of God. If someone like me opens their mind to critically analyzing their belief system, it will probably lead to many more questions. It just takes a LOT of time to even get to that point.
@nmonco
@nmonco 9 жыл бұрын
JamesCizuz I think this is called "projection" in psychological terms. If you were insulted and then killed someone it would be because you had a total temper tantrum. Then you assume that if God does the same thing it's because He is having a temper tantrum. That's not a proof. It's an assumption. And if God is what Christians and Jews claim He - the great I AM who is perfect in every way - then our insults can't actually hurt Him or diminish Him in any way. So why punish? Because it is fact just and not punishing leads other people to sin. It's the purest justice separated from any sort of hurt feeling.

I am 59 years old and just read Numbers for the first time today. I was shocked when I read about the stoning of a human being for something so trivial, so I decided to check the internet to see if anybody else felt the same way. I would usually just focus on reading the New Testament because it was less boring. I went to a Catholic school and in religion classes (grade 1 to 12) they concentrated on studying only the New Testament. Now I know why. Because in the New Testament there are verses like this: Luke 6:36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. How can God behave like a Jekyll and Hyde character? Maybe the person writing the Numbers section made a mistake? It just doesn't make any sense.

you'd think it's an exaggeration but it isn't! in some communities, on the sabbath day it was illegal to WALK for more than 1000 feet! why 1000 feet? because that was the distance between the most distant house and the church and back. other than that you were obliged to stay in the bed all day long, regardless of how hungry or thirsty you're cats, dogs, cows, horses and so on were!

This is, in fact, a recurring lesson throughout the old testament. I gathe rthe "crimes" are chosen randomly to be quite small and insignificant to drive home the real message: Obey God, at all cost, no matter how small the misdeed may seem to be! You see this when Moses returns and throws a tantrum when he sees the golden idol, has half the population murdered without trial and promotes the chief instigator to high priest, you see this here - the lesson is always the same: Don't think, don't judge, obey. And if obedience means to kill someone, do it. Don't question God's word - just murder them and make God happy.

There are plenty of times God is ready to strike the Israelites but Moses does question & intercede on the behalf of them. God, with no hesitation grants Moses requests. Even Abraham intercedes for Sodom & Gomorrah. I don’t know why Moses doesn’t intercede here. And it is a tough passage to read. There are instances in right before this where God strikes ppl down (using wrong incense I believe) without being notified. Surely he saw the man gathering the wood & could’ve did so himself. The only reasoning I could think of is the wicked nations surrounding the Israelites and he wanted them to take this very serious & not be influenced (human sacrifice, incest, etc).

1991stratplus Did anyone bother to actually read the whole chapter that the story is contained in? No, you didn't. It might be a good idea, before accusing people of being insane, crazy, blood-thirsty savages, to you, ya know, actually google "Numbers 15." Immediately before the story about the guy collecting sticks God makes it very very clear that if you break a rule unintentionally then all you have to do is make a small offering. That's it. No biggy. And this guy gets stoned. Why? Numbers 15:30-31 "But anyone who sins defiantly, whether native-born or foreigner, blasphemes the LORD and must be cut off from the people of Israel. Because they have despised the LORD's word and broken his commands, they must surely be cut off; their guilt remains on them." So the guy is NOT killed for collecting a few sticks - he's killed for telling the God who created and set him free from slavery "F. U." In modern language we'd call this "treason" and it's still a capital offense. Is this what atheism is about: being too lazy to do an easy google search and so arrogant that you will believe the craziest, most ridiculous things about the oldest living religion in the world that has survived and thrived through 3+ millennia?

You see, you don't need much fodder to heat my hearth, it's small but it gets the job done... Anyway, I'm blessed by Yahweh for stabbing a bunch of Philistines for reasons. Like one of the sons of some elder walked in on him jacking it so as retribution for the old man's humiliation the man's son had to be stabbed and his son's son and the man's other son, then it skips one and again so that we can be at the last victim or ransom or whatever we are calling it today. The elder had 6 sons so the one that walked in on him polishing his staff we stabbed, and the one in the middle, and the one at the end. The other two sons God promised kingdoms and gold to, for no real logical reason other than the boys had shown their holiness by not opening that door when they heard the goat sounds and for not being represented by an odd number, 1, 3, 5, you get it.

To be fair, Jesus was a good dude. He was against a lot of these old laws, and preached kindness, fairness, and compassion. The weird part (and one of the main reasons I turned atheist) is that Jesus is NOTHING like the god that is portrayed throughout the Bible. God is shown as nothing but angry, jealous, and vengeful; not just shown, he is literally quoted several times describing himself as such. It's bizarre to me that Christians ignore how different Jesus is from god.
