Great video. The markings on my 4JH4E were labeled 10 and 15, so I checked my service manual. It said to use the actual 1|4 and 2|3 marks themselves for top dead center. Thanks again!

Great video very helpfull ! But did you have to adjust the valve clearance or they still inside the tolerance?

I had to adjust two. They were within spec but on the high end so I just adjusted them to be in the middle of the tolerance so it matched the rest.

Just a note, Tynan has rebuilt vehicle engines and has extensive experience doing high quality mechanical work. If this saved you some money and possible heartache chasing up a "mechanic" buy him a beer through the link. All proceeds go to him for his how to videos. I would also sit a mechanic down in front of this video and make them watch it before they touched my engine. This section in the service manual is about the worst written I have personally encountered.

Ex ships engineer here. Certificated and 60 years since I started apprenticeship. You would be better not showing a mechanic this video. From the start that is not the camshaft, it is the rocker shaft. The clearance is not to the top of the spring but to the valve stem. The firing order he quotes is incorrect to the cylinders he identifies. He seems to have electrically isolated the engine, diesel engines are capable of starting without an electrical feed, fuel rack should be in the stop position. Laughable someone should publish this as a definitive video.

@@user-tc1hj7oi3f It can be called a cam shaft, go and look up the etymology of the word. The firing orders fine, he checked it against how the Yanmar internal service manual defines them which we have here. Better to conform to the service manual information than what anyone thinks they should be numbered as. If the ECU and alternator is isolated how do the electronic injectors supply diesel to run the motor? Funny thing is, I also self educated to be able to do my own mechanical work and then my fully qualified relative filled in the gaps. I did this because every single mechanic but one I have ever met or dealt with in my life was incompetent and usually had a bad attitude. Tynan is trying to be helpful, as most people with an education in 2023 are aware, you can't pay your way out of problems by hiring a "mechanic" anymore and have to self educate. If you really want to be helpful to the community, go and re write the Yanmar service manual section which is one of the most poorly written and least detailed that I have ever seen out of dozens of engine manuals. Personally, I would rather increase my intelligence by 1% then gain 60 years experience in a field and have recognised time is not a validating factor.

@@trentspencer7991 It cant be called a cam shaft in any distorted way or form, It can be called a rocker arm and rocker shaft. Try order a camshaft and fit it there. Would be a interesting video to watch. If the power to the ecu is off that diesel will never start. no fuel no fire. In fact even with the key on, the ecu needs to see the cam AND crank reference teeth pass at a minimum of 200rpm before it will start. I would like to see someone start any diesel engine with a wrench at that speed. If you do know how I know a few sailors who would pay large to learn that trick 😉 The hissing is air going past the rings. If its getting past the valves you have issues on the way Its far easier and faster to do TDC on rocking valves, he half got it. At the crossover of exh/inlet you are more than close enough for the opposite cyl 1-4 2-3
