no. yao played both in nba and china. he played in china every offseason so basically, yao never had a rest the moment he got drafted in the nba. It's the reason why his body became fragile that forced him to retire after 9 years of playing
@theonewhoeatslemons1931

+Kevin Montalba That's at most a factor. One of the many. Yao's body design naturally puts a lot of pressure on his feet, so it was really a matter of time. He gained significant weight to fit into NBA too. Plus Rocket's chief physician at the time was a complete hack, notice how nobody recovered from anything during those days?

The fact that Yao at his best was an 86%-87% FT shooter helps to show just how insanely skilled and talented he was. Most 7 footers struggle somewhat from the FT line (obviously there are exceptions), but Yao was 7’5 with massive hands, and he had the softest touch imaginable. His turnaround and mid range shots were absolutely pure. One of the great NBA “what ifs” is just how good he and the Rockets could have been without the foot injuries.

yup, people like to compare Shaq and Yao. I think it's very obvious; Shaq is the dominant center, the one who can get through and dunk no matter what. Yao is more of an all-rounder. He can shoot free throws, so fouls doesn't really stop him. He can shoot mid range. Both excelled at being centers. Both respected each other as a very good players.

Paul Garcia No. The weight he put on so he could be competitive against Shaq was a bigger burden for him. Before he went into NBA he was at around 260lbs. By 2009 he was over 300lbs. Most of the international games he played weren’t nearly as stressful as NBA games, probably not even up to the level of a hard NBA practice . He definitely would have had a longer career had he kept it at around 280.

It's really unfortunate Yao's career was cut short by injuries. I've looked at his injury history and noticed that he became injury prone around 2006, which started an unfortunate pattern. In 06, he got a season ending injury in April that requires 6 months rest. But he played for the Chinese national team just four months later. In February of 08, he was out for the season. But he again cut the recovery time short to play in the Beijing Olympics. Both time he played heavy minutes, which was the case for most times he was on the national team. Instead of giving their biggest sports asset enough time to recover, the Chinese played him 40 minutes. He played in nearly every off season for the natioan team, even in Asian tournaments that China could've done fine without him. As an NBA fan, this short-sidedness is infuriating. A 7-6 guy having very little rest, even when his surgery required recovery? No wonder the guys body gave out around the age 30. Note that almost all of his injuries since 06 were stress fractures. That means the accumulated pressure broke the bones. ACCUMULATED! His injuries were not result of bad luck, his gigantic body just couldn't take any more of the immense workload. If he had been given time to rest in the offseason, even just for a few, he could've played well into his 30s. The guy had great fundamentals, and he could've been effective even after his athleticism had diminished.(he was never athletic to begin with) Yao really blossomed into a bonafide superstar in 06, and he only had three full seasons after that. Imagine what he could've accomplished only if the Chinese granted him what all the other NBA players had: time to rest in the offseason.

I miss the NBA games very much 10 years ago,at that time,the audience was very large and lively,it's not like the game now ,it gives people a cold feeling today.

巅峰期的YAO和KOBE都可怕,但更可怕的是,看到这视频好像在昨天,其实已经10年了,时间太可怕了...映射着我们的青春一去不再复返。

I wanna imagine a world where Yao had todays sport science advances and care for his legs. The only thing holding Yao back was injuries cause of his height. He also wouldve thrived in todays 3 point era. Sucks we couldnt see more of what he had to offer basketball.

Shaq 1996-2004 Los Angeles Lakers Yao Ming 2002-2011 Houston Rocket So if Lakers drafted Yao Ming, they wouldn't need Shaq, as in Rocket need a center anyway so they might as well make a trade for Shaq, although I don't know what they can offer to Orlando magic at that point.

I mean Kobe tried to persuade Yao Ming join the Lakers after Yao's Rocket contract ends, but Yao prefer to play with TMac. Injuries pretty much ruined Yao's career, otherwise if Yao could team with Kobe and Gasol, then Lakers is definitely better than 2011 Mavericks and 2012 Heat

Yan Haochen aha ok now I understand what you meant. But to be honest, I don’t think Yao Ming is a good fit for Kobe, Yao Ming is more post up shooting center and can’t do alley ups like Shaq can do with Kobe. Yao is more like post up 3 second and do a fade away or hook, so he needs some space and Kobe needs space as well.
