The Mouse is public domain...but why are so many people depicting him as a killer right out of the gate?

Chances are the moment these people heard about Steam Boat Willy becoming domain at some point, they already start working on their projects in anticipation. After that it was pretty much the equivalent of (pardon me for saying this but) No-Nut-November for them until the time finally came.

“They are relying on ‘classic cartoon character…but it’s scary now’ to do all the heavy lifting.” Yes, sigh. I think this is an intersection of art and commerce. For many years I produced a walk-through haunted house attraction that raises money for a charity. We tried to be really different, each year producing a scary, interactive play with snappy dialog, actual character arcs, and surprising conclusions to a story. The effort that went into each production was large (maybe consuming 6-9 months out of each year in pre-production) but the money it brought in was much less than competing walk-through haunted attractions which had a simple grabbing concept, aka a killer Mickey, and no substance - just fast quick scares. The latter is unsatisfying if your goals are artistic, but much more efficient if your object is gross revenue.

Honestly I’m surprised no one has attempted to do a Tarzan horror movie considering he’s also in the public domain, there’s so much potential in that especially if they make in the style of the first Predator movie.

Making Tarzan a villian could be really interesting, considering that the original Tarzan novels reflected the racial ideologies of the time period (Tarzan literally means white skin in the fictional ape language). Prehaps it could be about an african village trying to fight off Tarzan and his army of ape-men.

I wanna see a slice of life series about Willie with his mischievous and clever personality from Steamboat Willie that details his character becoming more humble instead of goofing off all the time. Maybe even give Captain Pete some development so he can grow into a begrudging mentor to Willie.

Personally, i have nothing to say on the legal side of things, but the thing that really bothers me is the contempt people seem to have with the original creators of these IPs, these projects seem to be made exclusively out of spite for Disney, completely ignoring the original creators of these things who have nothing to do with disney. Take that Blood and Honey movie for example, i don't remember a single person saying it was good, all people were saying was "Hell yeah! Screw you Disney!" The intention didn't seem to make something good that respected A. A. Milne's vision but rather to insult disney because of how they've changed copyright in their favor, but personally i don't see that much of a difference between these big corporations and the public domain when both of them seemingly have no respect for these properties and the people who made them, seem like they're gonna be ruined either way. I've always dreamed of publishing stories but (aside from my own struggles with creativity) things like this really discourage me, the fact that on the slight chance that i create something and it becomes successful, people are gonna be more interested in taking it and twisting it into whatever they like, ignoring wether i would approve of it or not (maybe even intentionally). Sorry for the long comment, i didn't know how to explain this in a shorter way

Scary mickey projects have been done to death already so none of these are very original, I personally see the use of the 1920s mickey as an opportunity for fans to make something creative out of it that current Disney would never do.

This is why I kind of wish it happened in the 80s, you know there would be some wild stuff coming out if Pooh or Mickie were in the Public Domain. Just be creative people ! I feel like Walt Disney himself would probably feel like that quote from Freddie Mercury, "Do what you want with my music, just don't make it boring."

Here’s an idea for a Tarzan horror flick: Imagine the plot of The Deer Hunter but set in Africa and the characters are poachers hunting for Gorillas, Leopards and Elephants. Clearly, they’d have to deal with Tarzan…but also there’s the potential for these hunters to run into The Leopard Men from Opar or the Dinosaurs from Palucidar.

You think with the rise in stories being about generational trauma, they would at least make the horror in relation to childhood trauma/nostalgia. Thus making actual sense to use the classic characters into a horror material.

The thing that really annoys me is that people are complaining about projects instead of making their own or using the projects they deemed as valid to discredit the ones they deemed invalid. Trying to discredit public domains projects because they're not what you personally want is bad. All public domain projects deserve to exist.

It's because we live a society that's still nihilistic, which often compels people to make horrible things out of wholesome things, although there has been some pretty mainstream pushback against it lately, like Everything Everywhere All at Once, but our society isn't ready to abandon nihilism yet.

This is sadly the reality of the current taste within the entertainment media nowadays. So many people (me included, I must admit) no longer had the capacity to essentially think about anything remotely fascinating in our works. it's also problematic for it not only revealing how "stupid" we've gotten in terms of imagining our fantasies and dreams, but it's also basically diluting many kinds of wonder and magic within the realm of imagination; making the stuffs that principally-speaking is really awesome, but thanks to the blatant copy-&-paste and subsequent laziness of the people behind the projects, the result is a two-fold dilemma: 1. the people can only think that the ones that already published is the thing that works all the time (essentially it is what you just mentioned in this video) 2. it's also unknowingly suggesting to other people that, if you really had an idea that's truly different and will definitely serve a seemingly interesting and somewhat fresh take on the stuff that you've known only through a certain perspective, then that idea of yours can never truly get an acknowledgement because it's so different that it's really making others to question if you truly understand what is it you're working on. If there's one thing that feels outright similar towards this phenomenon -- is that it reminds me with so many of the Japanese Isekai-based works that was booming in the 2010s. Heck, that decade saw the rise of ridiculously outlandish things and ideas, which sadly gotten bogged down and having its value diluted (almost to the gutter), for the stories were confined by the "standards" of Isekai-based stories -- especially with its irritatingly cliche and frustratingly predictable storytelling. Which made me so very sad, really. Because I'm practically the only person who ADORES the premise of Isekai.

I do indeed, although that wasn't the result of public domain. It was the result of WB originally producing Five Nights At Freedy's, having Scott Cawthon take the project elsewhere, and WB deciding to repurpose what had already been developed. I know the director denies it, but I don't know who he thinks he's fooling.

This to me is just lazy to turn children's properties in horror. Can anyone do something else with this so it won't be this predictable and repetative? At least for most of the fairy tales, myths, fables, and classic stories that are in the public domain that Disney adapted, most of the dark stuff was already in the original stories, not like Winnie the Pooh or now Mickey Mouse when they wete ligjt-hearted at first and never intended to be horiffic. Unless its the sad tragic life of the real life Christophet Robin, the real bear that Winnie the Pooh was inspired by, or the many questionable stuff Mickey did in his earlier shorts.

Actually, you can't do anything with Mickey. It still has to be the Steamboat Willie version, so no color and no speaking.
@VelociraptorsOfSkyrim
@VelociraptorsOfSkyrim 6 ай бұрын
Well, that's not necessarily true. It just has to _look_ like Steamboat Willie and _not_ look like any other version. That's all. Disney cannot copyright things like it being color or having the ability to speak. They can copyright a specific design (Like the red shorts) and the voice. Having a Steamboat Willie with blue shorts and sounds like a chain smoker is perfectly fine and within the Public Domain version.

So Mickey, along with his friend Super Goof (Goofy's alter ego) and Donald Duck seek the help of the Shadow, Omni Viewer, Snazzy Chapeau, and Sir Adam Lexington. Call it Steampunk Mickey, The Shadow , and The Phantom Blot: New Aberdeen S.O.S.
