The guys perspective is also really important on this one. There’s always a reason he’s emotionally distant. Some men have been through a lot, me personally I was abused as a child. This makes it so it’s hard for me to trust others and be in relationships. Some guys will begin a stage of talking and getting to know you. And then they feel you need a relationship so they’ll go into one not realizing they can’t do it and they pull away.

The majority of my long-term relationships or entanglements were with avoidant attachment style emotionally unavailable women. It's so interesting how much of this can apply to women if they have an avoidant attachment style. This resonates very well. Reading Amir Levine's book on this taught me so much so that I don't do that to myself again. What you say about not losing the person but losing the dream, that there was this carrot dangled that it could work, where they'd give just enough to make you believe that there is potential when it never was there. I described that relationship as shell beach from the movie Dark City. That moment when you realized that it never had a chance because it was never real to begin with.

All my life. Soon 50 years. Have I thought that love should look like this. But after all these years understood. That this is bullshit. There is nothing in this. I run like on slippery soap and never get there. Getting sicker and sicker. I felt physical pain in my body. But after my last relationship in August 2021, I actually fell in love. Saw the connection and the breadcrumbs I learned to live on. It started with the relationship with my father. Also see my pattern when I encounter this. Become a total giver, doormat and slave. But my body screamed no from inside. Never abandon myself again for someone else's nothing. Became an abandoholic. No more ever. I had to get real how i feel so i could heal. Painful work. Spiritual awakening. Toughest trip I've done.

Remember 'use your words'? Your words exactly 'I'm very self aware and have been sensing in my gut something isn't right. It saddens me cuz we genuinely had a great connection but I need to end the relationship before I get any more invested in it.' Your words. Your 'I' statements. That's the easy part. I just ended a 6 month relationship for this very reason. First 4 months almost magical, last two months hell. I used I statements, “I know this is hard to talk about but I need a relationship where I can be vulnerable and we both can be honest, and trust, and grow”. He literally looked at the ceiling, then shut his eyes and refused to talk. Omg. Painful but I’m slowly moving on. Wishing both of us peace!

Women think they want an emotional man until one shows up. What do you want him to do? Share in your misery and cry on your shoulder? What’s worse is an emotionally unavailable woman because that is outside of her nature and a massive red flag. Women don’t get with men for emotions. They want safety and security.

@@Pacifica74 - Yet women file divorce 90% of the time regardless, which is my point. I find that statistic interesting since infidelity is virtually identical between sexes. A massive number of divorces are due to women complaining about finances, not because their husband doesn’t want to watch old reruns of Friends with her. A man can do all of those things you mentioned out of a sense of duty without bringing emotions into it. If you want a man do do those things just say you want him to be present in your life, not “emotionally available.” That makes it sound like you’re looking for a flaming gay guy as a partner.

Women want emotional connection but for too many when they don't get enough they nag and criticize which only makes him more emotionally unavailable. If you want a man's attention, don't wait for him to change. Instead, take charge and meet his needs first. Say positive things instead of negative things, hit the gym, diet, update your fashion. "Emotional availability" is a stupid western concept. There's nothing wrong with a man listening to his wife's problems, but his nature is to help her see an end to the worrying. He's not supposed to sink to her level and become a blubbering mess himself. While a woman's emotions are always valid that doesn't mean they're always based on something important.
