Been caught out with that one, now I use the buggered one as a sat nav/media player for the bike and use my good phone as a wifi hot spot for the buggered phone and keep the good one in my pocket.

Thanks for the heads up Andy. I have the Quad lock with dampener already so hopefully it will protect my Samsung. I haven't heard of any issues with them but will do some investigating to see if same or similar could occur.

I must admit I never remotely had thought of this potential issue and having recently seen the Quadlock dampening mount wondered what this was all about.. Interestingly having watched Ducati NYC’s videos over the past few yrs and he always has had his phone (i assume iphone ??) mounted on a quadlock on the handlebars of his Monster, he never has raised this an issue. As I am yet to get a Quadlock, regardless, i think when I do I will get the dampening mount as I wouldn’t want my phone affected. Thanks for the heads-up on this problem.

Had this a few months ago, also a quad lock mount. Surely the vibration damper should be provided with the motorcycle mount as without it the mount isn't fit for purpose

Yep, just been through this. My Ducati Diavel 1260s just munted the camera in my phone. The Apple shop did repair my camera under warranty. Their invoice said around $120 for the camera replacement so it may not be as drastic as you think.

The Quad Lock with vibration damper is the best phone mount on the market - hands down.

I have the vibration dampener fitted too, still don't trust that it's fully effective so rarely use it now.

G'day Andy. I use an old phone on the bars. I use the app Calimoto for a map as I go along. As for the camera, yep. Roots it! I'd love to say the shock mount works. Nope. I also have the wireless charger with it as well. I find the Quadlock case great to hold onto as it's like a reverse pop socket. But it destroys the camera, even with the dampener. Shame as I really like the product and there also from my home town. Ps. Carn the Dees!

It’s a crap outcome if the camera fails with the vibration damper, why even release it if it doesn’t work? Now days these devises are essentially cameras that can make a phone call. I think the quad lock stuff is great, but not worth a knob of goat poop if the very item it’s designed to protect is destroyed by using it.

I’ve heard that even using the damped mount doesn’t stop it either, I’m just not going to bother. Just have to listen carefully to the satnav instructions through my cardo.

Not entirely true Richie. I use a navigation app on my phone and the maps are downloaded onto the device - no signal required. However, you won't receive live traffic updates or mobile speed camera warnings without a signal.

Now who wouldn't have thunk that! s'house RnD engineers. Maye they should've studied complaint design or implemented some TMDI tuned mass damper inerter in the mount - You can do fancy engineering with polymers now

Yep it did the same to my iPhone with a quad lock even with the vibration dampener it’s due to the cameras autofocus lenses not liking the vibrations of the engine - not really quad locks fault tbh although they should be more honest about the potential issues

I bought the Quad lock a while ago, and one of my mates told me about the vibration issue. I was pretty miffed about it, as it wasn't cheap and I then had to spend even more for the damper. That said, I'd been using it for a while without any issues. Now I'm wondering if it's just an Apple problem (I use a Samsung).

I've run a Garmin Zumo Sat Nav on my ST3 since 2005. never had a single issue...my phone 📱 says in my pocket, switched off until I decided to check my messages at the end of the day.

I use my phone at work like yourself, one of the best tools an Engineer can carry in my opinion. Have not mounted it to the bike as I mostly use it for music, if I do use Google maps you get turn by turn through the helmet speakers anyway no real need to look at a map. Good shout out though & one to remember, as we all know the dam things are not cheap.

Iphone 11's apparently suffer the worst from this shaking. I have one (Iphone 11) and find focusing the camera on something further away, then bringing it back to what you were shooting might get rid of the shake. This worked for mine, but failed for others.

It's not only iPhones that suffer from this failure, other brands that use optical image stabilization instead of image sensor stabilization can fail. Quad Lock have a listing on their website of what bikes are most likely to cause failure, it has been a known issue for over 3 years.

Hm. I have a phone holder but its attached to the windscreen mounting bracket so not directly to the handlebars. Today I could hear the phone holder rattling without the phone in it. Hm now I am tempted not to do it.

Some people have had success in fixing this issue by rubbing a magnet over the camera. Obviously you need to be careful not to scratch the lens but its wort a go.

I dropped my iPhone out of my pocket doing 100 and it was fine, I dropped it weeks later walking in a car park and it shattered… never had problems with vibration - touch wood

Is the problem having the phone mounted and using it for recording video at the same time , or just having the phone mounted ? I have been using a mount for my iPhone XR on a Harley Dyna , Ducati Monster and a Livewire and it seems to be ok

Till it, is not okay. Too late then. The problem is the tiny vibration. Does not matter if the phone is turned off.

@@jimmybe64 to be honest I am kind of surprised that my iPhone XR has survived being mounted on the Street Bobs handlebars, no vibration damping to speak of and the vibrations aren’t small when stopped at the lights. The XR does have digital zoom and no optical zoom

I used a Quadlock with my Samsung for a while without any issues. Then my Apple owning friend told me horror stories, so I bought the damper. I'm wondering the same as you- is it an Apple only problem?

All smartphone brands. Apple has notified the public. Don't risk damaging your phone.

Although I sit on the No Phones on Bikes/ Keep it in pocket for emergencies side of the fence, I get it why others would want their phones on their bikes to navigate around. Sounds like a good case for a class lawsuit against Quadlock no? They’re obviously shitting themselves as the ad immediately after this vid had a sly “I’ve got the dampener fitted” comment so the bar stewards obviously know it’s an issue.

Shit design, but they will never admit fault. It's a mobile phone, it should hold up to vibration. Similar to how they didn't admit fault for crap macbook keyboards, but later revised the design.
