Hi, I was told by a professional acoustician that it is possible to have a measurable effect on low frequencies entering smaller rooms by resiliently hanging large drywall panels (with clips) , without having to cover an entire wall. The idea is that low frequencies have a long wavelength and the panels will silently vibrate and convert the vibrations into heat, disrupting the standing waves in the room. For instance, a 50Hz frequency has a wavelength of about 23 feet, so if you have a room that is smaller than that, the panel has a chance of reducing the resonance of an incoming frequency. I am putting this to the test soon, primarily because I am not currently in a position to do a full studio remodel, and only need to address a few rogue low frequencies entering the room. What are your thoughts on this?

I live in a flat and play guitar and synths. Do you think that more layers of carpet or rugs on the floor. Will reduce sound escaping down to the flat below. I can’t play my strings after 8 pm. But my speakers can be turned down , I also have them on my bed which has two mattresses on it. During the day I play my guitar facing the mattresses, it seems to catch a lot of the sound. Would acoustic panels as you show how to make would help with sound escaping and also improve the sound for me. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. Big love and respect from Northern England. 💚💛❤️

I have a plan of using a layer of Mlv-3mm Rubber pads-25 mm Above Dm foam Dn wooden flooring I have already placed tiles on the floor just forgot to sound proof at that time . There is 1 inch sand and cement mixture on which tiles are placed . Do I need some more layers Someone suggested to place ply board and one inch of sand also

I need to isolate sound from on two sides of a room (there are no walls on those two sides) and I'd like to isolate sound from floor to ceiling. It's a rental so I can't do anything permanent. I'm wondering what is the best way to do this? Hang sound deadening curtains, build freestanding foamboard walls, use 4" Mineral Wool panels as an option, etc?. I'm just discovering your videos so maybe I'm late to the game on getting a reply. Either way, thanks for the videos!

Thanks for another great video. I am building out a bar in a new building. There will be apartments above our 6 inch, concrete ceiling. I don't care about noise coming down from above but I want to make sure I do not disturb my neighbors with music (not live music) played in the bar. I am particularly worried about low frequency sound. I have the following questions if you have time:- 1) How much will 6 inches of concrete block the sound of music played in the bar? I read a lot about STC ratings but note that STC doesn't say anything about sound below 125Hz. Not much use when you consider a kick drum is 60Hz and a bass is around 40Hz. I don't want to play super-loud music but some background music is needed in a bar. 2) I planned to do a framed, sheet rock ceiling below the concrete ceiling (the concrete is 14 feet high). It turns out to be impossible because there is a large garage door mechanism which moves and is only a few inches from the concrete ceiling so there will be la large part of the ceiling not covered by the sheet rock. Can you suggest any form of treatment for this area? I might have enough room to apply mass loaded vinyl. Is there another product that could help stop the bar music disturbing the neighbors? Thanks for any pointers. - Tom.
@soundproofguide
@soundproofguide 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tom! Great question, is there a lot of noise that currently comes through the ceiling while the music is playing? And if so, is it mostly base (low frequency) or can you hear the music well? How are the acoustics where the musics playing? With high ceilings, do you have any acoustic panels hanging from the ceiling to absorb some of the low frequency noise before it makes its way upstairs?

Thank you for these helpful videos. Keep going, this is huge help. Noise is one of the biggest issues of our era. And each time less and less people understand and respect each other in terms of noise. I am becoming crazy with a neighbour old woman that lives in the room just behind the wall that separates my "studying and working" room from hers. She talks on the phone almost all day long and every day! And while asleep, be it in a siesta or by night, she snores!! So I am almost in a 24/7 nightmare with her! I have to be in my room all day, as I work and study a Master's and I am unable to concentrate with that voice coming in continously. So what I did is try to soundproof the wall. I put a syntethic panel, then on top of it a panel made of of Polyurethane foam, then an other panel of expanded polysterene. BUT all these three materials seem to not remove any of noise/voice coming in. So I am wondering if they ever serve for soundproofing (even decreasing a small amount of noise), or just they don't work. So I also prepared mass loaded venyl, and double dry walls to put on. One drywall of half inch thikness, and the other of 5/8". I want to put the mass loaded venyl in between the two drywalls. So, I really am like disapponted with what I am doing to soundproof that wall. Any suggestions, advice, or orientation will be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
@soundproofguide
@soundproofguide 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear about your situation. It's too bad the walls are so thin letting so much noise in. Foam panels will only deaden noise already inside the room. They will do nothing at "blocking" sound. The only way to block noise is by using mass. The good news is that the noise you';re trying to soundproof is a higher frequency noise which is easier to soundproof than a low frequency noise that almost vibrates through. So all you would need is another sheet of 5/8" and adding the Mass Loaded vinyl will just make it that much better! Make sure to look at the sockets and seal the cracks ks around those. A lot of noise comes thought wall sockets. Best of luck and please let me know how it all turns out!

I'm building a theater and purchased RC-1 resilient channel, but am terrified I'll hang it wrong... I haven't been able to find specific instructions for that yet... any advice on hanging that would be INCREDIBLY appreciative. I'm planning on paying someone to do the drywall/plaster and having 2 layers of 1/2" drywall with green glue in between the 2 sheets - should I just have them do the RC-1 as well, or is it easy enough that I won't screw it up? THANK YOU!
@soundproofguide
@soundproofguide 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Gary! I would definitely recommend them installing the RC but make sure to ask if they’ve done it before. Everyone that tells me RC doesn’t work is simply because it wasn’t properly installed. It’s not complicated to install but you’ll also have to make sure whoever installs the drywall knows to not have the screw that goes through the drywall connect to the joist. That’s one of the most common mistakes. Screws are either too long or not screwed at the proper spot. It basically only takes one screw to touch the joist and the entire RC is now useless.

Triple pane windows would be the way to go. I’d recommend a window insert but those are better for soundproofing high frequency noise like birds chirping, not as good for low frequencies you’re trying to block.

@soundproofguide
@soundproofguide 2 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry to hear that. What type of noise are they creating? Is it airborne noise (loud taking, music without much bass) or structure noise which would be more a vibration through the wall with bass and people walking. If it’s airborn noise you’ll need to add mass (drywall) and if it’s structural noise you’ll have to add a resilient channel. You can search these terms on my channel. Hope this helps!

Hi, I wish to convert my external single garage into a home theatre, but it is only 2.7m width, for saving the room, I wonder what if I give up the dry wall but install 50mm Rockwool > resilient channel > mass loaded vinyl (Sound proofing)> 100mm Rockwool > Fibre (for Sound acoustic). That’s mean not adding the dry wall. Sorry my English is not good as it is not my first language. Thank you.
@soundproofguide
@soundproofguide 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Anthony, no worries, English isn’t my first language either 🤣. So if I understand correctly, you want to soundproof your external garage but not use any drywall? If you’re not using drywall then the resilient channel would be useless. The mass from the drywall is what’s going to block the noise from going out. The rockwool will deaden the noise inside the garage but not block it.

I rent a house for a year, the master bedroom have a shared wall with the the bathroom of the neighbor, every time the people take a shower, the sound its so loud, how i can do soundproof the wall without make major changes like a drywall? there's some kind of solution that dont involved construction things?
@soundproofguide
@soundproofguide 2 жыл бұрын
Is the noise coming from the water inside the shower or is it the water pipes making the noise? Either way, those are hard to soundproof. I hate to say it but you’ll need to add mass and if the noise is coming from the pipes themselves then the pipes would need to be treated. It’s tough when you’re renting and not able to make alterations. Maybe talk with the landlord and see if there’s something that can be done.

It would definitely help. A lot of contractors do use type X drywall when soundproofing because of those added elements in the drywall. Some has fibreglass fibres inside the sheetrock and others have a fibreglass wrapping instead of the paper wrapping you would typically find on regular drywall. I would say the fibreglass wrapped drywall works better for soundproofing.

Thanks for all those informations. What do you think would be the better soundproof. 1: build à second ceilling under the ceilling 2 inch under the real ceilling. adding 1 layer of rockwool in the 2 by 4 frame wood, sonopan on top and accoustic scellant on sonopan joist than a second layer of 5/8 dry wall on top of all. Option 2: open the wall remove Pink wool and the 2 layer of 5/8 drywall in the actual ceilling. Adding 2x layer of rockwool in the ceilling. Adding sonopan and acoustique scellant on sonopan. Adding resillience bar on sonopan. Adding probably 2x layer of 5/8 drywall if I need to for fire ratting on top of all. Its to be able to play guitar in my condo.
